some useful recommendations

to get a premium quality espresso

• Always use good quality water.

- With the pod adapter: only use espresso pods (E.S.E. ^® compatible pods). Most recognized coffee brands propose E.S.E. ^® pods.

- With the ground coffee adapter: Only use coffee grounded for espresso (very fine grinds). The coffee grind differs from one brand to the other and explains the variety in quality. Do not hesitate to make tests by changing the quantity of coffee, the coffee grind you use in the ground coffee adapter, and how hard you tamp the coffee. Thus, you define your espresso yourself. A grind, which is too fine and compact, has a very long brewing time and gives a very strong espresso. On the other hand, too coarse a grind, which is not tamped, has a very short brewing time, thus reducing the strength of the espresso.

• We remind you that a good espresso is obtained with approximately

7 grams of coffee, a brewing time of around 25 seconds and a water temperature of between 90 and 95°C.

• Take care of the temperature of the cups. We advise you to warm the cup up first by pouring hot water into the cup then remove it and prepare your espresso.

- If you like very strong coffee (Ristretto), Handpresso advises you to use the special "intense" portafilter (optional).

- Handpresso offers a range of accessories for your machine dedicated to mobility: thermos flasks, carrying cases, outdoor kits, tampers...

cleaning and maintenance

  • Remove and empty the ground coffee adapter by pressing the filter mesh and knocking it slightly on the edge of a container.
  • Remove the brewed espresso pods from the machine after use.
  • Rinse your machine with water, and use a soft cloth to dry it. Do not use alcohol or detergents to clean it. These liquids could change the characteristics of the machine and make it dangerous. Descaling your Handpresso Pump is not necessary.
  • Do not put it in a dishwasher or in a microwave oven.
  • Do not plunge in water.
  • In order to ensure perfect operation, make sure you regularly oil your Handpresso Pump espresso machine with one or two drops of cooking oil (sunflower, rapeseed). Refer to illustrations p. 5.

storage

Owing to its small size, your Handpresso is easy to store:

• in a kitchen drawer,
- hung with your kitchenware (hook not provided),
• in its carrying case (optional).

warnings

Please read the instructions before using the machine.

  • Keep away from children & uninstructed persons. Avoid leaving the machine unwatched.
  • Inspect the machine carefully before use and make sure that there is no crack, no deep scratch nor any other damage preventing it from being in working order. Check that the ground coffee adapter is clean and greaseless.
  • Do not try to exceed the maximum pressure of 16 bar (green zone on the pressure indicator).
  • Only pour water in the reservoir.
  • Never press the infusion button if the portafilter is not properly locked and tightened up to the locking indicator; step 11 page 8 or step 9 page 10 in the instructions. Check that the ground coffee adapter / pod adapter is there before starting to brew the coffee.
  • Do not try to remove the portafilter during usage and before having pushed the infusion button back up.
  • Beware of coffee projections and beware of the direction of the nozzle during use. Remove the portafilter with care after having prepared your espresso. Beware of the remaining water in the reservoir, namely if you have made a strong espresso called « Ristretto ».
  • If you burn yourself, immediately pour cold water on the burnt area and call a doctor if necessary.

  • The machine should be used between 5^ and 50^ (41°F and 122°F), and under normal atmospheric pressure conditions (from 0 to 3000 m / 10 000 ft. altitude).

  • Do not try to repair the machine or replace parts yourself: contact an authorized retailer for this type of repair.
    • The machine is not suited for professional use.
  • Do not use the machine for any other purpose. Handpresso cannot accept responsibility or liability in case of incorrect use.
  • Do not hesitate to replace the ground coffee adapter at the slightest trace of wear, crack or break. You will find the new ground coffee adapters in your usual shop or in our e-shop at www.handpresso.com
  • Have the water reservoir and the portafilter replaced by an authorized retailer every 5000 espressos or every 5 years if you have not reached the 5000 espressos in that period of time.

troubleshooting

What to do in the following cases:

• The pump is blocked and I cannot pump?

Unlock the handle (step 3 in the instructions).

• I pump, but the pressure does not rise?

Check that the infusion button is up (step 2 in the instructions).

Make sure to pump till the stop.

Contact the authorized retailer if the pressure still does not rise.

• The water drips from the portafilter?

Check the position and the state of the rubber ring on the filling opening. Tighten the portafilter properly (step 11 page 8 or step 9 page 10 in the instructions).

Replace the rubber ring around the filling hole if it is damaged (dry, cracked or cut).

• The espresso is brewed too quickly?

Refer to * some useful recommendations *.§3
- If the problem remains, check the ground coffee adapter and replace it if the filter mesh is broken.
