WARNING
Please ensure that the polythene packing is kept away from the reach of children! Risk of suffocation!
2.2 Allergies - Why are they becoming more frequent?
Illnesses caused by allergies such as hay fever and allergic reactions to house dust and animal hair have almost doubled in the last few years. It is not yet medically clear why more and more people are suffering from allergic symptoms. Exaggerated hygiene in childhood may hamper the development of the immune system and favour allergies. It is certain, however, that along with heredity increased environmental pollution plays a significant role in the development of allergies.
2.3 Hay fever - A trifling complaint?
Hay fever, otherwise known as allergic rhinitis, is not actually a fever and does not necessarily have anything to do with hay. It is not caused by a virus but by pollen. Hay fever should always be taken seriously. The allergy can spread to the lower respiratory passages, leading to chronic disorders and finally to asthma. Your doctor can provide you with a diagnosis and the correct individual advice for you.
2.4 Hay fever - How it arises
It is our immune system's job to fend off and render harmless any contaminants that invade our bodies. In the case of an allergy, the immune system over-reacts to these contaminants. Even the tiniest amounts of allergens, such as flower pollen for example, are enough to induce the typical hay fever symptoms:
- Agonising desire to sneeze combined with violent sneezing attacks,
- Swollen, itchy nasal mucosa,
- Itchy, watery, swollen eyes.
The reason for this is an over-reaction of our defence mechanism. As soon as the flower pollen touches the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes, the body mobilises all its defences. Too many antibodies are created. These sit on the so-called mast cells. The mast cells in turn release Messenger substances (primarily histamine) that lead to the typical miseries of hay fever.
2.5 What can help to combat this over-reaction?
Of course, the easiest way of preventing an allergy is to consistently avoid all substances that trigger allergies. However, in practice this is hardly possible as one can come across allergens not only outside but also at home (due to house dust) or in foodstuffs.
In addition to drug treatment using antihistamines and cortisone, inoculations and acupuncture, light-therapy is also used successfully. In this case red light rays of one wavelength (approx. 660~nm ) are generated by special lightemitting diodes to reduce or to eliminate the allergic symptoms and the oversensitivity.
2.6 How the Medinose uses light-therapy to help you
Light-therapy is a new type of allergy treatment without drugs. Diodes which are capable of emitting red light with a wavelength of 660nm have been developed for the Medinose. Alleviation of allergic symptoms and lessening of the over-sensitivity of the nasal mucosa sets in at this wavelength.
2.7 The benefits of your light- therapy with Medinose:
Light-therapy is a drug-free treatment.
- The highly effective application lasting only approx. 4 minutes can be carried out practically anywhere.
- The treatment has no effect on other organs or body parts due to its use locally.
The typical symptoms of hay fever were significantly reduced in clinical test using the Medinose Plus. Some symptoms were alleviated or even eliminated completely in a matter of only a few hours. In the majority of patients it was possible to identify a clear improvement in the condition within two weeks.
3.1 Inserting / removing batteries
To insert the four batteries 1,5V (type AAA, LR03) included with the unit, open the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Press down on the dotted area on the battery compartment and simultaneously slide it in the direction of the arrow. Insert the batteries in the position shown inside the battery compartment. Replace the battery compartment lid and slide it upwards until it clicks audibly into place.
After 100 applications, the green indicating light on the ON/OFF button ③ will flash after pressing the ON/OFF switch ③ if the battery power is no longer sufficient for further use. It is then time to replace the spent batteries.

Remove the spent batteries and insert four new AAA batteries inside the battery compartment. Then replace the battery compartment lid and slide it upwards until it clicks audibly into place.

WARNING BATTERY SAFETY INFORMATION
- Do not disassemble batteries!
- Remove discharged batteries from the device immediately!
- Increased risk of leakage, avoid contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes! If battery acid comes in contact with any of these parts, rinse the affected area with copious amounts of fresh water and seek medical attention immediately!
If a battery has been swallowed seek medical attention immediately! - Replace all of the batteries simultaneously!
- Only replace with batteries of the same type, never use different types of batteries together or used batteries with new ones!
- Insert the batteries correctly, observing the polarity!
- Remove the batteries from the device if it is not going to be used for an extended period!
- Keep batteries out of children's reach!
- Do not attempt to recharge these batteries! There is a danger of explosion!
- Do not short circuit! There is a danger of explosion!
- Do not throw into a fire! There is a danger of explosion!
- Do not throw used batteries into the household refuse; put them in a hazardous waste container or take them to a battery collection point, at the shop where they were purchased!
4.1 Use of light-therapy using the Medinose
- Insert the plug 8 of the nasal applicator into the socket of your Medinose appliance 1.
- The nasal applicator ⑦ must be spread slightly apart to allow the LEDs to be inserted in the nostrils. Insert the LEDs as far as possible into the nostrils. The nasal applicator should nevertheless sit comfortably.
- Press the ON/OFF-button 3 to start the treatment. The green indicating light on the ON/OFF-button 3 will be lit constantly during use. At the same time the light emission of the nasal applicator 7 will begin.
Light emission will be ended automatically after approx. 4 1/2 minutes and two acoustic signals (beeps) will be emitted. The treatment can also be stopped by pressing the ON/OFF-button at any time manually. This will also lead to the emitting of two acoustic beeps. The green indicating light will go out after the treatment has stopped. - Now remove the nasal applicator ⑦ from the nostrils.

NOTES
- If the green indicating light on the ON/OFF button ③ flashes, this indicates that the connector ⑧ is not plugged in correctly or there is insufficient charge in the battery for an application or the LED of the nasal applicator ⑦ is not working.
- If the green indicating light on the ON/OFF button neither lights up nor flashes, this indicates that the battery has been incorrectly inserted or is completely discharged.
4.2 Duration and Frequency of Application
- An application with the Medinose appliance only lasts approx. 4 1/2 minutes. During this time, the LEDs radiate red light having a wavelength of approx. 660nm and a defined intensity.
- The automatic shut-off ensures that the duration of treatment always remains the same and prevents the nasal mucosa from being overloaded.
- The Medinose should be used three times a day at the beginning of treatment. The frequency of application may be reduced when symptoms have been alleviated.
- Treatment should be spread over the course of a day. The first application should be carried out either before or after breakfast and the last in the evening before going to bed whilst the third application can be carried out during the day simply by taking the appliance with you and using it when the opportunity arises. The practical belt clip 4 on the back of the unit makes it easy to wear.

NOTE
The applications should be continued for at least one week and preferably two to achieve the desired treatment result.
4.3 Preventive Treatment
Your Medinose appliance may be used not only in the acute phase of the illness but also as a preventive measure. You will most likely know the period during which your allergy starts or the type of pollen that causes it. Begin prophylactic treatment a good week before the pollen that triggers your allergy is forecast. Even at this stage you should carry out an application two to three times a day depending on the severity of your allergy.
4.4 The red light used for light-therapy with Medinose has no negative effects on the nasal mucosa. Even with therapy continued over a longish period, there is no fear of any structural impairment of the tissue when no more than three applications per day are administered. If your doctor suggests medical treatment due to the severity of your allergy, it may be combined with light-therapy without hesitation. There are no known interactions with anti-allergenic drugs such as antihistamines or corticosteroids.
5.1 Cleaning and Care
- You may only clean the unit yourself.
- Clean both LEDs after each use with a damp cloth and a mild soap.
- Do not use aggressive detergents or stiff brushes under any circumstances.
- Do not immerse either the appliance or the cable with the LEDs in water. If liquid has managed to get into the appliance, remove the battery immediately and contact your specialist dealer.
- The nasal applicator may be disinfected with an alcoholic disinfectant, e.g. 70% ethanol.
- You may purchase additional nasal applicators (Article no. 45065) from your specialist dealer so that your Medinose appliance can be used by several people under hygienic conditions.
- Remove the battery from the appliance if you do not intend to use it for a longish period. This will prevent the battery from leaking.
- No further maintenance or checking is necessary if the appliance is used in accordance with these instructions for use.

This product must not be disposed together with the domestic waste. All users are obliged to hand in all electrical or electronic devices, regardless of whether or not they contain toxic substances, at a municipal or commercial collection point so that they can be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.
