Thank you for your confidence in us and congratulations on your purchase! By purchasing the massage device IVM you have acquired a quality product by MEDISANA.

This unit is intended for body massage with and without heat treatment. To ensure that you are able to obtain the results you are looking for and can enjoy using your MEDISANA massage device for a long time to come, we recommend that you read carefully the following information about the use and care of the device.

Read the instruction manual carefully before using this device, especially the safety instructions, and keep the instruction manual for future use.

Should you give this device to another person, it is vital that you also pass on these instructions for use.

1.2 About the power supply

• Only use this unit according to the intended purpose and as directed in the instructions for use.
• Before connecting the device to your power supply, make sure that it is switched off and that the electrical voltage specified on the device's type label matches that of your mains power.
• Keep the power cord and the device itself away from heat, hot surfaces, damp and liquids. Avoid touching the plug or power switch with wet or even damp hands, or when you are standing in water.
• Parts that conduct electricity on the device must not come into contact with liquid.
• If the device falls into water, do not try to pick it up. Instead pull the plug out immediately.
• Always make sure that the plug is easily accessible when the device is connected.
• Disconnect the plug from the socket immediately after using the device.
• Never pull on the power cord to disconnect the appliance from the mains. Always pull out the mains plug!
• Do not carry, pull or rotate the device by its power cord.
• Make sure at all times that the power cord does not represent a tripping hazard. The cord should not be kinked, pinched, twisted, nor pulled over sharp edges.

1.3 Specific groups of people

• Particular care should be taken when using the device in the vicinity of children, people with illnesses, and particularly people with special needs.
• Do not leave the device unattended while it is plugged in. The device should be stored out of reach of children. Electrical appliances are not toys!
• Do not allow children to play with the clear plastic packaging, as it may pose a risk of suffocation!
• The device should not be used by anybody who has any kind of physical disability which could limit their ability to operate the device correctly.

1.4 Before operating the device

• Massages using the MEDISANA IVM are not a substitute for treatments administered by doctors or physiotherapists.
• Do not use this device if you are pregnant.
• People fitted with a pacemaker, artificial joints or electronic implants should in all cases consult a doctor before using the device.
• You should not use this device if you are affected by one or more of the following illnesses and conditions: Circulation disorders, varicose veins, open wounds, bruises, broken skin, inflammation of the veins or thrombosis.

• If you feel any pain from use of this device, or find the massage unpleasant, stop the treatment and consult your doctor.

• Check the device and its power cord carefully for any damage before each use. The device should not be used if it is in any way defective.

• Do not use the device if there is any visible damage to the device itself or to the power cord, if the device is not working flawlessly or if it has been dropped or has fallen into water. To avoid any risk of injury send the device to the service point to be repaired.

1.5 Concerning operation

• The device is intended for private use only and should not be employed for commercial purposes.
• Use the massage device only for the purpose specified in the instructions for use.
• The guarantee is invalidated if the device is misused.
• Keep the device away from rain and damp. It should not be operated outdoors.
• It is vital to avoid placing, using or storing the device above containers holding liquids, particularly where the device could fall or be knocked into a bathtub or shower tray.
• Do not use the device in the vicinity of aerosol vapour or at the same time as an oxygen device.
• Do not use the device underneath bedding or cushions. Under no circumstances should you cover the device during use.
• Do not use the device for more than twenty minutes maximum at a time, and allow it to cool down for about thirty minutes before using it again.
• Avoid using the device directly on the head, bones or joints, on the front of the throat, in the genital area or around the kidneys.
• It is best not to use this device directly before retiring - the massage that it delivers has a stimulating effect and may delay sleep.
• For understandable reasons, the manufacturer cannot bear the costs of any damage that may result from non-compliance with the instructions for use.
• Should you give this massage device to another person, it is vital that you also pass on these instructions for use.

1.6 Concerning maintenance and cleaning

• You the user should not carry out any work on the device, except for cleaning. To avoid possible injury, do not attempt to repair the device yourself. Contact the service point for all repairs.
• Before cleaning the device, switch it off, unplug it from the socket, and allow it to cool. Never immerse the device in water or other liquids.
• Read the information in the section "Miscellaneous, 4.1 Cleaning and maintenance" on page 11.
• Do not repair the device yourself. This would automatically invalidate the guarantee. The service point alone should be charged with any repair work.
• When the device is not in use it should be stored in a clean and dry place, ideally in its original packaging.

2.2 What is massage?

Massage is one of the oldest methods of treatment and an important part of physiotherapy. The mechanical treatment of the outer tissues of the body relaxes tense muscles, improves blood circulation and supports the regeneration of tissues. Massage is stimulating, relaxing and helps to eliminate pain of the nerves and muscles.

Massage may also positively effect the vascular system, the inner organs and metabolism.

There are five classic methods of massage: stroke massage, kneading, tapping and vibrating massage as well as rubbing and slapping.

Furthermore, there are other important massage techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, reflexology, underwater pressure massage, brush massage and finger pressure massage techniques (shiatsu, acupressure).

2.3 How does the IVM massager work?

The MEDISANA IVM massager utilizes what is known as vibration massage, whereby the massage head is subjected to high-frequency oscillation, giving rise to a vibrating motion, which is transferred to the parts of the body being massaged.

It also features an optional infra-red function, emitted through the massage head, which can be activated either independently or together with massage. This special form of heat treatment accelerates the positive effects of the massage. When this is activated, the massage head will warm up slightly, but not actually get hot.

The unique combination of intensive massage and heat treatment allows the IVM massager to offer effective and relaxing therapy.

3.1 Getting started

Ensure that the appliance is switched off (function selector switch 3 is in the lowest position "0") before plugging into the mains. Then plug into an appropriate socket (230 V).

3.2 Starting the Massager

Use your thumb to gently push the selector switch 3 upwards until it clicks into place and you can feel the massage head vibrate.

3.3 Infra-red function with or without vibration massage

The infra-red function can be activated separately or in combination with the vibration massage function. For infra-red treatment without vibration massage, push the function selector switch 3 one position closer to the massage head 2 to switch off vibration and at the same time activate the infra-red source 1 on the massage head.

For combined vibration massage and infra-red treatment push the function selector switch 3 towards the massage head to the uppermost position.

3.4 The massage

• You can give yourself or a partner a massage. Switch the unit on as described above and apply to the part of body to be massaged. Do not use pressure; just place it lightly on the body. The massage effect is brought about by the vibration of the unit alone. Simultaneous use of the infra-red function improves the effectiveness of the massage. Do not concentrate on one side of the body for too long; rather change the area of massage frequently.
• Choosing the direction of the massage you can decide on the effect: a massage toward the heart relaxes, a massage away from the heart stimulates.
• For a full body massage, please refer to "Safety Information".
  Each session should not be more than 10 - 15 minutes. To ensure positive results, please use the massager regularly.
• The application should feel pleasant. In case you experience pain or find the massage disagreeable, please interrupt the session and consult your doctor.
• After treatment, switch the massage device off, pull out the mains plug and let the device cool down.

3.5 Switching off the unit

Switch off the unit by returning the function selector switch 3 to its original position "0". When you have finished using the unit, unplug it from the mains outlet.

4.1 Cleaning and maintenance

• Before cleaning the unit, make sure that it is switched off and unplugged from the mains outlet.
• The device should be cleaned using a soft, slightly dampened cloth.
• Do not use harsh cleaning agents or stiff brushes.
• When cleaning, never immerse the unit in water and make sure that no water gets into the unit.
• Wait until the device is completely dry before using it again.
• Undo any kinks in the cable.
• You should ideally store the device in its original packaging and keep it in a clean, dry place.

This product must not be disposed together with the domestic waste.

All users are obliged to hand in all electrical or electronic devices, regardless of whether or not they contain toxic substances, at a municipal or commercial collection point so that they can be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Consult your municipal authority or your dealer for information about disposal.

5.1 Warranty and repair terms

Please contact your dealer or the service centre in case of a claim under the warranty. If you have to send in the unit, please enclose a copy of your receipt and state what the defect is.

The following warranty terms apply:

1. The warranty period for MEDISANA products is three years from date of purchase. In case of a warranty claim, the date of purchase has to be proven by means of the sales receipt or invoice.
2. Defects in material or workmanship will be removed free of charge within the warranty period.
3. Repairs under warranty do not extend the warranty period either for the unit or for the replacement parts.
4. The following is excluded under the warranty:

a. All damage which has arisen due to improper treatment, e.g. non-observation of the user instructions.
b. All damage which is due to repairs or tampering by the customer or unauthorised third parties.
c. Damage which has arisen during transport from the manufacturer to the consumer or during transport to the service centre.
d. Accessories which are subject to normal wear and tear.

1. Liability for direct or indirect consequential losses caused by the unit are excluded even if the damage to the unit is accepted as a warranty claim.
