Frequently Asked Questions - Strega Bezzera

How to start the machine for the first time?
Open the water tap (version R) or fill the tank (version S). Plug in and set the main switch to position 1. The boiler fills automatically. Wait until the pressure gauge reads 1-1.2 bar. Open the steam wand to purge air, then the machine is ready.
How to prepare an espresso with the lever?
Place the portafilter with ground coffee (8g for single, 14g for double). Firmly pull the lever down until it stops. Wait for the chamber to fill and the first drops to appear. Gently raise the lever to infuse. Coffee flows until the upper stop (max 75 cc). Remove the cup before the end.
How to use steam for frothing milk?
Briefly open the steam wand to expel condensation. Submerge the nozzle in cold milk. Open the valve by holding the button down then lift the lever to lock it open. Steam heats and froths. Close the wand as soon as the desired temperature is reached. Immediately clean the nozzle with a damp cloth.
What to do if the safety light stays off?
The safety light (red) indicates the water level. If it is off, it means the water level in the tank (version S) or boiler (version R) is insufficient. Check the water level and refill if necessary. If the problem persists, the pump stops automatically after 120 seconds; turn off and restart the machine.
Why does coffee flow too slowly or drip?
Possible causes: grind too fine, coffee too tamped, excessive dose, shower screen or filter clogged, insufficient pump pressure. Adjust grind and dose. If problem persists, clean the shower screen with the small brush provided or contact a technician.
What to do if coffee flows too quickly with light crema?
This can be due to grind too coarse, insufficiently tamped coffee, too low dose, or pump pressure too high (>10 bar). Adjust grind and dose. If pressure is the cause, contact a technician.
How to maintain the machine daily?
After each use, clean the steam wand and portafilter. Daily, clean the cup warming grid and drip tray, the body with a damp cloth and mild detergent, and the group gasket with the provided watering can. Immerse filters in boiling water to dissolve oils.
How to descale the machine?
The manual does not provide a detailed descaling procedure. It is recommended to use a specific descaling agent for espresso machines and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Regular service by an authorized technician is advised for the internal circuit.
What to do in case of a leak at the portafilter?
Check the gasket (wear or buildup). Clean it with the small brush provided. Ensure the portafilter is correctly positioned on the group. If the problem persists, the gasket must be replaced by a technician.
How to switch from tank to mains mode on the TOP version?
Unplug the machine and ensure it is cold. Remove the tank, screw on the supplied cap with seals, connect the tank probe bypass cable. Remove the drain plug and replace it with the supplied water drain hose. Connect to the water mains according to paragraph 4.2.2.

7 - TROUBLE SHOOTING

Problem Diagnostics/Solution Advices

No distribution of steam from specific tubeThe steam tube nozzle is blocked; unblock Clean the steam spout after it using a pin. This problem is linked to each use. the fact that the tip of the nozzle enters the milk.

Leaks from filter holder Possible causes:

1 - The seal under the cup is worn or encrusted.
2 - The filter holder is placed incorrectly on the unit.

Difficulty in placing the filter holder on the attachment ring

The problem may be caused by the excessive dose of coffee in the filter holder.

Abnormal position of filter holder once placed on the unit.

Once locked onto the unit, the filter holder handle is further to the right than usual. The seal under the cup is worn.

Coffee flow is less than usual

Coffee comes out in drops, distribution time is too long and the quality of the coffee is not good, it has a dark cream. Possible causes:

1 - The coffee has been ground too finely.
2 - The coffee in the filter holder is pressed down too hard.
3 - Too much coffee has been placed in the filter holder.
4 - The unit shower is blocked.
5 - The filter in the filter holder is blocked.
6 - The pressure supplied by the pump is low (< 9 bar - 0.9 MPa) or null.

Clean with the brush provided.
If the problem should arise again, call a specialised technician.
Reduce the amount of coffee in the filter holder. (Standard doses for filters are 6 grams per dose).
Call a specialised technician to replace the seal under the cup.
In cases 1-2-3, the problem can be solved by adjusting the grinding and/or dosage of the coffee.
In cases 4-6, a technician must be called.
