Safety

Information

Tips for your well-being

• You should not use the Body Toner BTS if you have a cardiac pacemaker, artificial joints or implants. The operation of the implants can be influenced by the electrodes.
  If you have any serious illness or injury or were operated recently talk to your doctor before using the BTS.
• Do not treat any parts of the body that have swellings, burns, inflammation, peeling skin, wounds or other sensitive points.
• Persons, whose sensitivity is disturbed or impaired may only apply the device according to the instructions of a physician.
• Do not use the device when sleeping and take care not to fall asleep during use.
• Do not use the device during pregnancy and wait at least 6 weeks after the birth of your baby before starting training.
• Do not use the device at the same time as any other device which sends electrical current into the body.
• If you are using the BTS body toner on the feet, only use the Relax programme.
• The treatment should be pleasant. If you feel pain or feel the application unpleasant, stop it and consult your doctor.

Always observe the following points

• Only use the device in accordance with its intended use according to the operating instructions.
• The warranty will be invalidated if the device is used for purposes other than those for which it is intended.
• The device may only be used in conjunction with the accessories (electrodes, cable) recommended by the manufacturer.
• Do not use the device if it is not working correctly, if it has been dropped or has fallen into water or has been damaged.
• Do not operate the device in the vicinity of high-frequency transmitters, e.g. microwave and short wave transmitters or radio transmitters. They may impair the device's ability to function.
• Do not use the device whilst taking a bath or a shower.
• The device may not be used whilst driving a car or whilst operating and controlling machinery.
  Children must not use the device. Medical products are not toys!

• Protect the device against damp. If, nonetheless, liquid does enter the device, the batteries must be removed immediately and further use avoided. Please contact your service centre in this case.

• Never use the device in rooms where aerosols (sprays) are used or pure oxygen is being administered.

• Do not expose the device to direct sunlight.
• In case of a malfunction, do not try to repair the device yourself. Not only does the warranty expire, but serious danger can result (fire, electric shock, injuries). Only authorised service offices should carry out a repair.

Informations about the electrodes

• For hygiene reasons, ensure that each user uses his or her own electrodes.
• Only use electrodes that stick properly.
• Do not place the electrodes on the body if it is wet.
• Only use the unit on clean, dry skin.
  Before coming into contact with water, remove the electrodes.
• Do not attach electrodes at the front of the neck, the area around the heart, in the genital area or on your head.
• You may not attach the electrodes on fresh scars, injured or swollen skin, close to thromboses or other vessel problems (e.g. varicose veins).
• Avoid contact with pointed or sharp items.
• Take care never to bring the electrode pads into contact with one another. This could lead to short-circuiting of the device.
• Do not use damaged or defect patient leads to the electrode; there is danger of electric shock.
• Do not expose the electrode pads to direct sunlight.
• Slight reddening of the skin after use is normal and will disappear within 30 minutes. Do not use the unit again until the reddening has disappeared.
• Select shorter treatment times if skin irritations occur over a longer period of treatment.
• In case of more severe skin irritation, stop the treatment and consult a physician.
• Remove the remains of adhesives from the skin with soap and water. Do not use alcohol or solvents.

2.1 Items supplied and packaging

Please check first of all that the unit is complete and is not damaged in any way. If in doubt, do not use the appliance. Send it to a service point.

The packaging can be reused or recycled. Please dispose properly of any packaging material no longer required. If you notice any transport damage during unpacking, please contact your dealer without delay.

Please ensure that polybag packing is kept away from reach of children! Risk of suffocation!

2.2 Muscle stimulation

The electronic BTS body toner from MEDISANA enables you to achieve a completely new dimension of body training. This digital device provides effective body toning without any physical exertion. The aim is to tone the muscles by stimulating them electronically (EMS). The electrodes emit electrical impulses which cause the particular muscle to contract in an intense and pleasant way. Natural muscle movements are simulated which train and tighten the muscles.

If used for 30 minutes per day, the following effects can already be seen after one month:

• Tighter and firmer stomach and buttocks muscles
  Well-formed hips
  Decreased danger of cellulite occurrence
• Better formed legs which appear to be longer
  Relaxed feeling due to soothing massage

2.3

How does the Electronic Body Toner BTS work?

The Body Toner BTS sends tiny electrical impulses to the muscle that you want to train. These impulses imitate the signals that the brain transmits when you move normally. Thereby the muscle is animated naturally to contract and to relax.

So if you attach a pair of BTS electrodes to a muscle, the muscle will automatically contract and relax - as it does under bodily strain. Thus, for instance, the abdomen muscles can be trained without sit-ups and the leg muscles without jogging etc.

Contraction

A weak signal is transferred to the muscle by the electrodes. As the strength of the signal is increased, the muscle contracts just as when training conventionally.

Relaxation

The signal stops so that the muscle can relax before the next signal comes.

NOTES

• EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) causes an unusual and pleasant feeling. You will feel a light tingling sensation and then skin and muscle contraction between the electrodes.
• The muscle should contract evenly, remain tense for a few seconds and then relax again gently.
• If you have a stabbing, tingling feeling, the electrodes are not correctly attached. If this is the case, move the electrodes until it feels pleasant again and then continue your training.
• As with all forms of training, the rule that the more the muscle is stressed, the better the results achieved applies here. If you use the device regularly, you will notice that your muscles become stronger and tighter.
• The training intensity can be continually increased during the course of time. You should make sure that it always remains pleasant for you.

3.1 Inserting/ changing batteries

Press the battery lid ① on the back of the device using your thumb and slide it away from the battery compartment. Remove the battery compartment lid. Insert the three delivered batteries (type AA, 1.5 V, mignon). Pay attention to the polarity of the batteries as indicated in the diagram in the battery compartment. Put the battery compartment lid back on and slide it back until it locks back in.

When the batteries become weaker, the battery symbol 17 on the display lights up. If the device does not go on after pressing the ON/OFF switch 4, please insert new batteries.

WARNING BATTERY SAFETY INFORMATION

• Keep away from children! - Do not recharge!
• Do not short-circuit! - Do not throw into fire!
  There is a danger of explosion!
• Do not dispose of old batteries with your household waste, but dispose of them at a battery collection station at a recycling site or in a shop!

3.2 Connecting the electrodes

The device has four exit channels with connection sockets 2 for the patient leads.

Patient lead 10

The patient lead has a device plug 13 attached at the end and branches into two ends with one red and one white connector socket 11 for the connection to the electrodes 14 or 15. (the colour of the sockets has no meaning for the electrode connection.)

• Please connect the patient lead 10 first with its device plug 13 into the connection socket 2 in the device.
• Plug the electrode plugs into the free red and white connector sockets 1 at the other end of the patient lead.
  If you use all 4 patient leads, you can connect exactly 8 electrodes to the device.

Multiple cable 12

Alternatively you can also use a multiple cable together with two patient leads

A multiple cable has the device plug 1 at one end and branches in two ends with connector sockets 1 for the patient leads.
- Insert the multiple cable 12 with the device plug 13 into the connection socket 2 on the device first.
- Then connect two patient leads 10 with the multiple cable 12. Insert the patient lead device plug 13 into the multiple cable 12 connector sockets 11.
- Then insert the electrode plugs 11 in the free red and white connector sockets on the patient lead 10.
- Using one multiple cable 12 with two patient leads 10 you can thus connect exactly two pairs of electrodes (4 electrodes in total) each to one connection socket 2 on the device.

4.1 Placing the electrodes

Before placing the electrodes 14 or 15, please ensure that the device is turned off.

Please cleanse and dry your skin thoroughly at the places where the electrodes are to be attached before attaching the electrodes.

Remove the protective film before attaching the electrodes. Keep the protective film carefully so that you can stick the electrodes back onto it after use.

Stick the electrode according to the illustration ( see page 22 ) to the part of your body where treatment is to be given. Press the electrode firmly onto the clean and dry skin. Place the electrodes one after another on the areas of your body which you wish to train.

When attaching the electrodes, please pay attention to the following:

Both electrodes from a single patient lead 10 must each be attached to the same muscle in order to achieve the desired effect.
- Do not attach the electrodes directly to a bone (e.g. a hip or a rib) as this could cause an unpleasant feeling.
- Attach both electrodes from a single patient lead 10 as far away as possible from each other on one muscle to make the exercise even more effective.

WARNING

• Before you remove the electrodes or place them elsewhere on your body, always make sure that the device is turned off or turn it off using the ON/OFF switch 4!
• Only then remove the electrodes carefully by pushing your finger under the edge of the electrode and lifting the electrode gently thereby. Never remove the electrode by pulling the cables.

CAUTION

• For safe and hygienic storage stick the electrodes back onto the protective film.
  If the electrodes 14 or 15 have to be replaced, please use only original MEDISANA electrodes.

NOTE

It is possible during the first sessions that the muscles show no apparent reaction despite correct placing of the electrodes. This is because it takes a while in some cases until the muscles become accustomed to the electric signal. Continue with the exercises and you will soon experience your first successes.

4.2

Examples of usage

4.3 Programme selection

Turn the device on using the ON/OFF switch. First all the symbols appear for ca. 1 second in the display. This shows that the device is in working order. After it is switched on, the intensity level of the individual exit channels is always set at zero (0). As long as the intensity is set at zero (0), the corresponding exit channels are not switched on.

The programme you last used for training is automatically suggested again as the training programme. If you switch the device on for the very first time, the training programme Mode A is pre-set in the display.

Press the MODE switch 6 to select between the following programmes 18 (A-G):

Mode A

Tone up - Normal Training Programme (30 minutes)

This is the right programme for you if you would like to get fitter and don't have time for regular training. ToneUp contracts and relaxes your muscles like all gymnastics exercises, only the exertion is missing. Your muscles will be strengthened and tightened and your body brought into form without any effort.

This programme is used for intensive training. The muscles are contracted even further and relaxed, the body is trained even more intensively.

This programme is used for relaxation when you are stressed or have painful muscles or just want to relax after a hard, stressed day. A gentle massage soothes muscle pain and relaxes your muscles immediately with long-term effectiveness.

The intensity sinks for 10 seconds by 90% under the set level and then increases during the following 10 seconds. The intensity remains for 5 seconds at the set level before it drops again.

Mode F

Celluforme Programme - Anti-Cellulite-Programme (20 minutes)

In the course of this programme, the muscles are massaged intensively. This improves the blood circulation and the muscles are warmed-up. Rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the muscles stimulates the lymphoid system and transports harmful substances out of the corresponding areas. The muscle contraction also tightens and forms your figure at the same time.

Mode G

Muscle relaxation programme (15 minutes)

The low frequency and relatively long relaxation period relaxes the muscle in a pleasant manner in this programme and does not stress and train it intensively.

NOTE

All programmes can be interrupted at all times by pressing the ON/OFF switch 4. When the programme is running you can see how long the treatment will take on the egg timer 2 on the display.

4.4

Body Toning training

Programme Start

After you have stuck the electrodes 14 or 15, onto the corresponding body areas, turned the device on using the ON/OFF button 4 and selected the programme, start the training by pressing the intensity regulators 3 for the individual exit channels.

By pressing the arrows pointing upwards on the corresponding keys you can increase the intensity of the programme for each electrode. Press the downward arrows to reduce the intensity. The intensity can be increased from the lowest level 1 to the highest level 15. The level chosen is shown on the display 1 next to the exit channel 19.

NOTE

Check your settings frequently. Always select an intensity that you find pleasant.

You can only increase the intensity when the device emits a stimulation signal, the intensity can always be reduced. You can set different intensities for each of the 4 exit channels Thus you can train different muscles with varied intensities.

As soon as you activate the MODE button 6 for programme selection all intensities are automatically switched back to zero (0).

During application, the time information next to the egg timer 21 in the display shows how many minutes the application still has to run.

The device turns off automatically when the application time comes to an end. It is then possible to train a different part of the body, however between two applications to the same part of the body a gap of at least 6 hours is recommended.

Lock key 5

The device has a lock key 5 which hinders that you change your programme selection and the intensity whilst training by mistake.

Press the lock key 5 for longer than 3 seconds: The lock key symbol (padlock) 16 then appears on the display. As long as this symbol is displayed you cannot change the intensity any more and also not select a new programme. The device can still be turned off immediately using the ON/OFF switch 4.

To release the lock, press the lock key 5 again for at least 3 seconds.

The BTS Body Toner is supplied with a carrying belt. If you want to use the belt, just loop it through the belt holder on the back of the device and tighten it around your hips so that the device display points upwards and it is comfortable for you.

4.5 Errors and repair

The device doesn't turn on after the ON/OFF switch is pressed.

The batteries are not inserted correctly. Insert the batteries correctly. The batteries are empty. Replace the batteries.

The muscle only contracts a little although the intensity is set high.

The battery is almost empty. Replace the battery.

The electrodes are worn out / don't stick properly. Order new electrodes from MEDISANA.

The electrodes are placed too close together. Both electrodes from a single patient lead are to be placed as far away as possible from each other on one muscle.

Unpleasant feeling where the electrodes are placed.

The electrodes are poorly placed. Check the placing of the electrodes according to the instructions for use.

The electrodes are worn out / don't stick properly. Order new electrodes from MEDISANA.

A pair of electrodes doesn't emit any stimulus.

The intensity level of the exit channel is set at zero (0). Increase the intensity.

The cables are not inserted correctly. Check whether all the cables are inserted firmly in the connector plugs.

One cable is faulty. Insert a different cable in the connector socket. If it works the first cable is faulty and should be exchanged.

One plug is faulty. Insert the cable in a different connector socket. If it works, the plug is faulty. Bring the device to your specialist dealer.

5 Miscellaneous

5.1 Cleaning and maintenance

• Remove the batteries before cleaning the unit.
• Never use strong detergents or hard brushes.
• Clean the unit using a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild soapy solution. Never use abrasive cleaning agents or alcohol. Do not allow any water to get into the unit. Do not use the unit again until it is completely dry.
• Do not expose the device to direct sunlight or to high temperatures and protect it from dust, dirt and damp.
• Store the electrodes between applications on the protective film in the resealable storage pouch in a cool dry place.
• The effectiveness of the electrodes gradually subsides after 20-30 applications due to skin deposits in the gel. To maintain the adhesiveness, hold the electrodes under cold running water for a few seconds and then shake them dry. Before using the electrodes again, leave them on the protective film for at least 8 hours.
• Remove the batteries from the unit if you do not plan on using it again anytime in the near future. Otherwise, the batteries may start leaking.

5.3

Disposal

This product must not be disposed together with the domestic waste.

All users are obliged to hand in all electrical or electronic devices, regardless of whether or not they contain toxic substances, at a municipal or commercial collection point so that they can be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Remove the batteries before disposing of the equipment. Do not dispose of old batteries with your household waste, but dispose of them at a battery collection station at a recycling site or in a shop.

Consult your municipal authority or your dealer for information about disposal.

6.1 Warranty and repair terms

Please contact your dealer or the service centre in case of a claim under the warranty. If you have to return the unit, please enclose a copy of your receipt and state what the defect is.

The following warranty terms apply:

1. The warranty period for MEDISANA products is three years from date of purchase. In case of a warranty claim, the date of purchase has to be proven by means of the sales receipt or invoice.
2. Defects in material or workmanship will be removed free of charge within the warranty period.
3. Repairs under warranty do not extend the warranty period either for the unit or for the replacement parts.
4. The following is excluded under the warranty:

a. All damage which has arisen due to improper treatment, e.g. non-observance of the user instructions.
b. All damage which is due to repairs or tampering by the customer or unauthorised third parties.
c. Damage which has arisen during transport from the manufacturer to the consumer or during transport to the service centre.
d. Accessories which are subject to normal wear and tear.

1. Liability for direct or indirect consequential losses caused by the unit are excluded even if the damage to the unit is accepted as a warranty claim.
