Frequently Asked Questions - MDA1 SAMSON

How to power the Samson MDA1?
The MDA1 can be powered by an internal 9V battery or by 48V phantom power via the XLR cable. The circuit automatically selects the highest source.
Which battery to use and how to install it?
Use a standard 9V battery. Open the compartment cover on the back, connect the connector and insert the battery. Close the cover.
How to know if the MDA1 is powered?
The POWER indicator on the front panel lights up when the device is powered (battery or phantom).
Can I use the MDA1 without a battery if I connect an XLR cable with phantom?
Yes, as soon as 48V phantom power is detected, the MDA1 automatically switches to it and cuts the battery to save battery life.
What is the Ground Lift switch for?
The Ground Lift disconnects XLR pin 1 (ground) to break ground loops and eliminate unwanted hum and buzz.
What does the Pad (-15 dB) switch do?
The Pad switch attenuates the input signal by -15 dB to avoid distortion when connecting high-level audio sources (e.g., speaker output).
Can I connect a guitar or keyboard directly to the MDA1?
Yes, the 1 MΩ input impedance is suitable for passive instruments like guitars and high-impedance keyboards.
What is the recommended maximum cable length at the output?
The balanced XLR output allows very long cables (up to several dozen meters) without signal loss or noise, thanks to common-mode rejection.
How to clean the housing?
Clean the housing with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use chemical or abrasive products, and avoid any contact with liquids.
What to do in case of failure or malfunction?
Contact Samson customer service. You must obtain an RA (Return Authorization) number before shipping the unit for repair.

Introduction

A direct insertion box, or DI box, converts unbalanced high impedance signals to balanced low impedance signals. This provides the facility to run long cables without deterioration of the signal, as well as connecting audio signals to a mixer's microphone input.

Samson's S-Max Direct Boxes combines premium sound circuitry with durable, roadworthy construction to provide high-quality signal connection solutions for live and studio applications. The Samson MDA1 Mono Active Direct Box offers a variety of DI solutions for live sound and recording applications. You can connect all kinds of audio signals like those from keyboards, drum machines, mixers, guitars, and outboard signal processors.

Unlike passive direct boxes, the MDA1 is active, which means it has a power supply, so you can rely on an even frequency response on any audio signal you connect to regardless of its output impedance. The MDA1 is ideal for connecting instruments with passive pickups, which have very high-impedances, by preserving the top end of the instrument's frequency response. The balanced output provides a clean signal, that is less susceptible to noise when compared to an unbalanced cable, which allows for running longer lengths of cables. Another benefit from a balanced connection is CMR (Common Mode Rejection), which provides cancellation of interference (hums and buzzes), while leaving the original signal pure.

With proper care and maintenance, your MDA1 will operate trouble-free for many years. Should your direct box ever require servicing, a Return Authorization (RA) number must be obtained before shipping your unit to Samson. Without this number, the unit will not be accepted. Please call Samson at 1-800-3SAMSON (1-800-372-6766) for an RA number prior to shipping your unit. If your direct box was purchased outside of the United States, contact your local distributor for warranty details and service information.

  1. POWER Indicator – This LED illuminates when the MDA1 is powered on. The MDA1 can receive power from either the intern 9 Volt battery or from a mixer's 48-volt phantom power.
  2. INPUT - 1/4" hi-Z input jack for connecting for instruments, line level, or speaker level audio. If there is no cable connected to the INPUT jack, the MDA1 will power off. This prevents the battery from draining when the direct box is not in use.
  3. THRU - 1/4" output for passing the input signal through to a stage amplifier or monitor system.
  4. BATTERY On/Off Switch - Switches the 9 Volt battery on (when there is a cable connected to the INPUT jack).
  5. BALANCED OUTPUT – Male XLR low-Z connector.

  1. -15dB Pad switch – When engaged, the input level is attenuated by either -15dB to prevent distortion or when connecting a high level signal to the INPUT jack.
  2. GROUND LIFT – When the switch is engaged, the input ground (shield) is disconnected.
  3. Battery Door – Install a standard 9 Volt battery by opening the battery door and attaching the battery to the terminal connector.

Powering the MDA1

The MDA1 can operate on a single 9 Volt battery or standard 48 volt phantom power. Whenever phantom power is present on the XLR cable that is connected to the Balanced Output, the MDA1 plus will automatically switch to phantom power and disconnect the 9 Volt battery. In fact, when the Battery switch is in, the MDA1 will sense the voltage and select which is greater. The Phantom/Battery switch can be used to turn off the battery power when the unit is not in use.
