USER MANUAL BP 2590 KAZ

Braun PrecisionSensor pro is a blood pressure monitor that has been developed for easy and accurate blood pressure measurements at the wrist. The accuracy of the product has been tested at the time of manufacture. Measurements can be saved.

For reliable measurements, blood pressure monitors should always be positioned at an appropriate measuring position at heart level.

Therefore the Braun PrecisionSensor pro has an active positioning system that guides the patient's arm via arrows on the display to the appropriate measuring position at heart level.

However, to ensure accurate results, carefully read these instructions.

Hypertension in the medical practice¹⁾

Hypertension is very critical as risk factor for a number of cardiovascular related diseases. Thus, it is one of the main risk factors for stroke, coronary heart disease, cardiac insufficiency and renal disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that up to 20% of the world's adult populations has high blood pressure. The prevalence is even higher in the older population segments resulting in up to 50% of people affected by hypertension.

These data reveal that blood pressure measurement plays a central role in the medical practice either as screening method for undiagnosed individuals or as treatment monitoring tool for diagnosed patients. Blood pressure measurement in the practice represents the foundation for diagnosis and therapy of hypertension apart from the widespread use of patient home monitoring and special diagnostic procedures, such as Ambulatory Blood Pressure Measurement (24-hour-measurement).

The importance of the blood pressure measurement in the practice's environment calls for a high performance standard with regard to quality and reliability of the professional measuring device. Braun PrecisionSensor pro has been designed to meet these demanding requirements. The device features a newly developed electronic positioning sensor that commands an active positioning system enabling the user to reliably find the appropriate measuring position at heart level. In this way accurate and reproducible

readings are achieved. Moreover, the device monitors the appropriate positioning at definite intervals during the measurement cycle, thus providing additional safety and reliability. This watchdog feature allows patient self measurement in the practice, which may be beneficial in reducing the problem of white coat hypertension.

Important

• Deviations in blood pressure values may occur with people suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, angiostenosis, arteriosclerosis in the upper extremities, diabetes or with users of cardiac pacemakers. In case of doubt, please carry out a comparative measurement with the stethoscope method.
• The cuff of this product is suitable for a wrist circumference between 13.5 and 20~cm . Measuring deviations may occur if patient's wrist is not within this range.
• Patient's self-measurement in the medical practice: Prior to the first self-measurement, it is necessary to instruct the patient how to use the appliance correctly.

Inserting batteries

• Use only alkaline batteries of the type LR 03 (AAA) (e.g. Duracell-Ultra) as supplied with this product.
• Remove the battery cover (F) and insert two batteries with correct polarity (see symbol in the battery compartment (E)).
• New batteries (Duracell-Ultra) will provide approximately 300 measurements.
• Only discard of empty batteries. They should not be disposed of in the household waste, but at appropriate collection sites or at your dealer.
• Repeat a measurement no sooner than after 3 minutes.

Key rules for accurate blood pressure measurement2)

• Blood pressure should be measured on a patient to be seated who has had a rest of approx. 3-5 minutes. If indicated, a measurement can also be taken on a person in supine position (refer to «Measurement on a person in supine position»). During measurement, the patient should not move, nor speak.

• Prior to the measurement, the patient should avoid heavy physical exercise or psychic excitement.

• The patient should avoid drinking large quantities before the measurement; the bladder should have been emptied as far as possible.

• Avoid taking measurements within 60 minutes after the patient has consumed alcohol or nicotine.
• If a patient takes blood pressure effective medication, ask when he/she last took it.
• Wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating a measurement.

Measuring

For every blood pressure measurement at the wrist an appropriate measuring position at heart level is essential for accurate results.

1. Fasten the appliance on the patient's left arm on the radial side of the forearm (see illustration). Make sure the cuff (G) fits tight. Stand close to the patient in a position so that you can easily see the display and the control buttons. Press the «I/O» button (C). An arrow appears on the right hand side of the display (A). If there are readings stored in the memory, «mem» appears in the lower left corner of the display.

1. Help the patient to take the measuring position as shown. The arms should remain close to the body. Make sure the appliance is positioned approximately at the person's heart level. Move the forearm of the patient up or down (see illustration) in the direction of the arrow.

1. When a measuring position has been reached, you will hear an acoustic signal and the display shows a heart symbol. Both indicate that the appropriate measuring position has been reached. The measurement now starts automatically.

1. When the measurement is complete, an acoustic signal will sound again, and the reading is displayed. Upper (systolic) value Lower (diastolic) value Pulse

Additionally, on the upper display section, three status boxes will appear to confirm that the appropriate measuring position was kept during the complete measuring process.

All three boxes have to show OK. If the following symbols (OK) = too high; (OK) = too low appear, the appropriate measuring position was not maintained and the measurement has to be repeated.

Important

15 seconds after switching on the device, the measuring process will begin automatically, even if the appropriate measuring position has not been reached. If at any time you want to discontinue the measurement, press the I/0 button.

Memory

The blood pressure monitor can store up to 30 readings along with the status box information. Readings are stored automatically after each measurement.

To recall stored readings, first switch off the device. Then press the memory button (B). Repeatedly pressing the memory button will call up one by one all stored readings (including status box information). The number in the upper left corner of the display indicates the memory position (01 being the oldest, 30 the most recent).

• Holding down the memory button for more than a second will delete all memory data completely. After clearing the memory, the appliance will turn off automatically.

Turning off the product

Press the I/O button to turn the product off. Otherwise the product will turn off automatically after 2 minutes.

Measurement on patients in supine position

When taking a reading on a patient in supine position the appropriate measurement position at heart level of the Braun PrecisionSensor pro device is normally achieved automatically. The active positioning system is not needed in this case. In order to guarantee a correct measurement the position sensor should be switched off for the measurement (refer to «Pre-setting the position sensor»).

Pre-setting the position sensor

The active positioning system of the appliance allows accurate and repeatable blood pressure measurements in the practice. Therefore, the position sensor is activated in the pre-settings at the time of manufacture. We recommend that you keep it activated. In certain cases, e.g. prevailing measurements on persons lying down, it may be necessary to de-activate the position sensor. For this purpose, you will find a select button (D) underneath the battery compartment cover.

First turn off the product. Keep the select button pressed, until an acoustic signal sounds. The display shows a flashing “OK” next to the position sensor symbol (see illustration).

If you wish to turn off the position sensor, press the «I/0» button (C): The display changes from «OK» (on) to «←» (off). Press the memory button to confirm the new setting. Then the product turns off automatically. In order to re-activate the position sensor, proceed as described above.

Storage, cleaning and disinfection of the product

Cleaning and disinfection of the device housing and the cuff may be done with commercially available cleaning and disinfection solutions. Preferably undyed solutions should be used in order to avoid discolouring of the device housing. To clean wipe cuff and housing with a cotton swab slightly moistened with the solution and immediately wipe dry with a clean cotton swab.

Do not store the product in a place exposed to direct sunlight or high humidity.

Calibration

This product has been calibrated at the time of manufacture. If used according to the use instructions, periodic re-calibration is not required.

Manufacturing date is given by the LOT number on the back of the product. The first number after LOT represents the last digit of the year of manufacture. The next three digits give the day of the year of manufacture.

An example: LOT 0116 xx xx.... this product has been manufactured on the 116th day of the year 2000.

What to do if ...

Problem

Situation

Batteries are weak. Measurements still possible.

Solution

Battery replacement required soon.

Batteries are empty. Memory readings can be called up but measurements not possible.

Replace batteries.

Cuff is too loose or cannot be pressurised.

Refit the cuff tightly.

Error message with a number higher than 64

Refit cuff tightly, take new measurement.
