How to change the chuck on the Fein ASCM 18 QX?

To change the chuck, use an Allen key to unscrew the inner screw (reverse thread). Then unscrew the chuck by hand. Reassemble in reverse order. Make sure to tighten properly.

Which battery to use with this model?

Use only Fein 18 V Li-Ion batteries from the AS series. Models 2.5 Ah, 5.0 Ah and 9.0 Ah are compatible.

How to adjust the torque setting?

Turn the adjustment ring located behind the chuck. The numbers (1-20) correspond to increasing torque. The drill symbol (drill bit) disables the torque limiter.

What to do if the drill does not start?

Check the battery: is it charged? Inserted correctly? Check the electronic lock (protection). If the problem persists, contact Fein after-sales service.

Can I drill metal with this drill?

Yes, using metal drill bits and selecting the appropriate speed. Use cutting lubricant to extend the life of the bit and the machine.

How to maintain the chuck?

Regularly clean the chuck jaws with a brush. Avoid excessive dust. If the chuck slips, tighten or replace it.

The LED does not turn on, what to do?

The LED turns on automatically when the trigger is pressed. If it stays off, check the battery. If the problem persists, the LED may be defective (repair required).

What is the maximum drilling depth in wood?

With a 22 mm bit, up to approximately 40 mm. For deep holes, use a longer bit and drill gradually.

How to change the speed?

Stop the drill. Push the speed selector (behind the trigger) forward or backward. Position 1 for high torque (screwing), position 2 for high speed (drilling).

Intended use of the power tool:

Hand-held cordless drill/driver for screwing in and unscrewing screws and nuts, and for drilling and screw-driving in metal, wood, plastic, ceramics, as well as for tapping in weather-protected environments without water supply using the application tools and accessories recommended by FEIN.

Special safety instructions.

Use auxiliary handle(s), if supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal injury.

Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing operations where the application tool could contact hidden wires. Contact with a "live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and shock the operator.

Beware of any concealed electric cables, gas or water conduits. Check the working area before commencing work, e.g. with a metal detector.

Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses.

Where appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtrating particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.

Secure the work piece firmly. A work piece that is gripped tightly in a clamping device or vice, is more secure than if held by hand.

Hold the power tool firmly. High reaction torque can briefly occur.

Do not machine any material containing asbestos. Asbestos is cancerogenic.

Do not rivet or screw any name-plates or signs onto the power tool. If the insulation is damaged, protection against an electric shock will be ineffective. Adhesive labels are recommended.

Do not use accessories which are not specifically designed and recommended by the power tool manufacturer. Safe operation is not ensured merely because an accessory fits your power tool.

Clean the ventilation openings on the power tool at regular intervals using non-metal tools. The blower of the motor draws dust into the housing. An excessive accumulation of metallic dust can cause an electrical hazard.

Never look or stare into the light of the power tool's lamp from a short distance. Never point the light of the lamp into the eyes of other persons in close vicinity. The radiation produced by the lamp can be harmful for the eye.

Do not direct the power tool against yourself, other persons or animals. Danger of injury from sharp or hot application tools.

Use and handling of the battery (battery pack).

To avoid hazardous situations such as burns, fire, explosion, skin injuries, and other injuries when handling the battery, observe the following instructions:

Batteries must not be disassembled, opened or reduced in size. Do not subject batteries to mechanical impact or shock. Hazardous vapours and fluid can escape in case of damage and Improper use of the battery. The vapours can irritate the respiratory system. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause skin irritations or burns.

When battery fluid from a damaged battery has come into contact with objects close by, check the respective components, clean them or replace them as required.

Keep the battery away from heat and fire. Do not store the battery in direct sunlight.

Do not remove the battery from its original packaging until it is going to be used.

Before any work on the machine itself, remove the battery from the power tool. If the power tool accidentally starts, there is danger of injury.

Remove the battery only when the power tool is switched off.

Keep the battery away from children.

Keep the battery clean and protect it against moisture and water. Clean contaminated battery terminals and power tool connections with a dry, clean cloth.

Use only intact original FEIN batteries that are intended for your power tool. When working with and charging incorrect, damaged, repaired or reconditioned batteries, imitations or other brands, there is danger of fire and/or explosion.

Follow the safety warnings in the operating instructions of the battery charger.

Hand/arm vibrations

The vibration emission level given in this information sheet has been measured in accordance with a standardised test given in EN 60745 and may be used to compare one tool with another. It may be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure.

The declared vibration emission level represents the main applications of the tool. However, if the tool is used for different applications, with different accessories or poorly maintained, the vibration emission may differ. This may significantly increase the exposure level over the total working period.

An estimation of the level of exposure to vibration should also take into account the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually doing the job. This may significantly reduce the exposure level over the total working period.

Identify additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration such as: maintain the tool and the accessories, keep the hands warm, organisation of work patterns.

Handling hazardous dusts

For work procedures with this power tool where material is removed, dusts develop that can be hazardous to one's health.

Contact with or inhaling some dust types, e. g. asbestos and asbestos-containing materials, lead-containing coatings, metal, some wood types, minerals, silicate particles from materials containing stone, paint solvents, wood preservatives, antifouling paints for vessels, can trigger allergic reactions to the operator or bystanders and/or lead to respiratory infections, cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The risk from inhaling dusts depends on the exposition. Use dust extraction matched appropriately for the developing dust, as well as personal protective equipment and provide for good ventilation of the workplace. Leave the processing of asbestos-containing materials to specialists.

Wood and light-metal dust, hot mixtures of sanding dust and chemical materials can self-ignite under unfavourable conditions or cause an explosion. Avoid sparking in the direction of the dust collector as well as overheating of the power tool and the materials being sanded, empty the dust collector/container in time, observe the material manufacturer's working instructions, as well as the relevant regulations in your country for the materials being worked.

Operating Instructions.

Adjust the rotational direction switch and the gear switch only when the machine is at a complete stop.

Always push the gear switch through to the stop. Otherwise, the machine can become damaged.

Thermal overload of the power tool is indicated through flashing of the LED in the handle.

In case of overload, the machine switches off.

To avoid accidental starting, e. g., during transport, set the rotation selector switch to the centre position.

Electronic torque shut-off (see pages 8–9).

Adjust the torque only when the machine is at a complete stop.

The motor switches off when reaching the set torque and an audio signal sounds. After the shut-off has taken place, release the on/off switch and press it again for the next screwdriving operation.

The audio signal can be switched on and off.

The electronic shut-off is deactivated when working in the “ torque level.

To achieve good working results, press the power tool with sufficient force against the screw.

Handling the battery.

Operate and charge the battery only within the battery operating-temperature range of 0°C - 45°C (32°F -

113°F). At the beginning of the charging procedure, the battery temperature must be within the battery operating-temperature range.

The real percentage of the battery charge condition is only indicated when the power tool motor is stopped. The electronics automatically switch off the motor prior to the battery being deep discharged.

Repair and customer service.

When working metal under extreme operating conditions, it is possible for conductive dust to settle in the interior of the power tool.

Blow out the interior of the power tool via the ventilation slots frequently with dry and oil-free compressed air.

Intended use of the battery chargers:

Battery charger for automatic charging and re-charging of FEIN batteries with battery voltages between 6.0 - 25.2 V (ALG30/ALG40) and 10.8 - 18 V (ALG50).

Special safety instructions.

Keep the battery charger away from rain or moisture. The penetration of water into an electrical device increases the risk of an electric shock.

Do not operate the battery charger on easily inflammable surfaces or in combustible environments. The heating of the battery charger during the charging process can pose a fire hazard.

This device is not intended to be used by persons (including children) with limited physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and/or knowledge, except if being supervised by a person responsible for their safety or having received instructions from this person on how to operate the device.

Provide for sufficient ventilation during operation. Do not operate the battery charger in enclosed cabinets or in close vicinity to heat sources. Ambient temperatures in excess of +45 °C can lead to malfunctions.

Do not charge non-rechargeable batteries. Otherwise there is danger of fire and explosion.

Keep the battery charger clean. Contamination can lead to danger of an electric shock.

Before each use, check the battery charger, cable and plug. If damage is detected, do not use the battery charger. Never open the battery charger yourself, and have repairs carried out only by FEIN or an authorized FEIN service agent. Damaged battery chargers, cables and plugs increase the risk of an electric shock.

Remove the battery from the charger and pull the mains plug when not using for extended periods. Saving energy helps to save the environment.

When cleaning the battery charger, pull the mains plug out of the socket. There is danger of electric shock.

Do not rivet or screw any name-plates or signs onto the battery charger. If the insulation is damaged, protection against an electric shock will be ineffective. Adhesive labels are recommended.

Operating instructions.

Connect the battery charger to the socket outlet without a battery inserted. The yellow LED indicator lights up and signals operational readiness.

Insert the battery.

The monitoring of the charge procedure is signalled by a flashing green light.

The end of the charge procedure is indicated by continuous green lighting.

The rapid charging starts automatically as soon as the battery temperature is within the charge-temperature range of 0 °C to 45 °C.

In case of an extremely deep discharged battery, the charging procedure may not start until after a delay of several minutes after sliding on the battery.

When lithium-ion batteries are fully charged, the battery charger switches off automatically.

For NiCd/NiMH batteries, trickle charging is activated. The green indicator lights up.

Repeated inserting of a charged battery leads to over-charging and affects the service life of the battery.

New NiCd/NiMH batteries that have not been formatted yet, or deep discharged NiCd/NiMH batteries that need to be re-formatted will not achieve their full capacity until after 3 – 5 charging and discharging cycles.

If the battery becomes discharged within a short time despite being charged correctly, it has reached the end of its service life.

ALG40: The attachment (9 26 04 103 01 0) is a spare part. Fasten the attachment only with the original screws provided.

Meaning of the LED indicator.

LED indicator Meaning

	red flashing light	Charging not possible due to the following possible reasons:- Contacts contaminated. Improvement measure: Clean the contacts by inserting and removing the battery several times.- The battery is defective. Improvement measure: Replace the battery!
	green flashing light and red flashing light	The battery temperature is not within the charge-temperature range of 0 °C to +45 °C. The rapid charging procedure starts as soon as the battery reaches the allowable charge-temperature range.

Repair and customer service.

Once per week; more often in case of frequent usage:

-Keep the contacts in the slide-on shoe clean.

-Clean electrical contacts only dry.

-Pay attention that metal chips do not enter the housing of the battery charger.

When the battery charger's power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by FEIN or by an authorized FEIN Service Agent, in order to avoid hazardous situations.
