How to pair two TP-Link TL-PA4020P Powerline adapters?

Plug both adapters into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Press the Pair button on one for 1 second, then within 2 minutes, press the Pair button on the second for 1 second. The Powerline LED should light up to confirm pairing.

What to do if the Powerline LED does not light up?

Check that both adapters are plugged into the same electrical circuit (same meter). Re-pair them using the Pair button. If the problem persists, try other outlets or reduce the distance between adapters.

How to reset a TP-Link Powerline adapter?

Press and hold the Pair button for about 10 seconds until the power LED turns off then on again. You can also use the tpPLC utility to perform a software reset.

Why do I have no internet access via my Powerline network?

Ensure all adapters are on the same electrical circuit and the Powerline LEDs are lit. Check Ethernet connections and that the router is distributing IP addresses. Restart the modem/router if necessary.

Can I plug a Powerline adapter into a power strip?

It is not recommended to plug a Powerline adapter into a power strip, as this can reduce performance. Plug it directly into a wall outlet. If the adapter has a pass-through outlet, you can plug the power strip into that.

How to secure my Powerline network?

Use the Pair button to create a secure network. Press Pair on an already configured adapter, then within 2 minutes, press Pair on the new adapter. This automatically generates an AES-128 encryption key.

What to do if the speed is slow?

Move the adapters away from electrical appliances that generate interference (clothes dryer, air conditioner, etc.). Plug those appliances into the pass-through outlet of the Powerline adapter to filter noise. Also check that the electrical network is in good condition.

Can I add more than two adapters to the network?

Yes, you can add up to 16 compatible Powerline adapters or extenders. Use the Pair button on an adapter already connected to the network, then on the new one to integrate it.

How to update the firmware of my Powerline adapter?

Download the tpPLC utility from the TP-Link website. Connect the adapter to your computer, launch the utility, and use the firmware update function. Ensure the adapter remains plugged in during the update.

Do Powerline adapters work between different electrical phases?

Usually, Powerline adapters work on the same electrical circuit (same phase). If they are on different phases, the signal may not pass. In this case, use a phase coupler or install the adapters on the same circuit.

1. Connect one adapter to a LAN port of your router using an Ethernet cable.

Set up a secure network:

1 Press the Pair button for 1 second on one adapter.

2 Within 2 minutes, press the Pair button for 1 second on another adapter.

Q2. How to troubleshoot if there is no internet connection in my powerline network?

A1. Make sure all powerline devices are on the same electrical circuit.

A2. Make sure all Powerline LEDs are on. If not, pair your adapters and extenders again.

A3. Make sure all hardware connections are correctly and securely connected.

A4. Check if you have an internet connection by connecting the computer directly to the modem or router.

A5. Make sure your computer's IP address is in the same segment as your router's.

Q3. What can I do if a successfully-paired powerline device does not reconnect after it has been moved to a new location?

A1. Try another socket and make sure it is on the same electrical circuit.

A2. Try to pair it again, and make sure the Powerline LED is on.

A3. Check for possible interference, such as a washer, air conditioner or other household appliances that may be too close to one of the powerline devices. Plug the appliance into the integrated electrical socket (if the powerline device has one) to remove some electrical noise.

More advanced configurations, such as firmware upgrade and QoS configuration, can be accessed through the tpPLC Utility. You can install the tpPLC Utility from the TP-Link official website.
