How to charge the battery of the Hitachi ML 36DAL lawn mower?

Plug the charger UC36YRSL into a mains socket (the indicator flashes red). Insert the battery BSL3625 into the charger until the line is visible. Charging starts, the indicator lights up solid red. Once finished, the indicator flashes red. Unplug the charger and remove the battery.

What to do if the mower engine does not start?

Check that the release key is inserted and turned. Ensure the battery is properly inserted (buttons engaged). If the problem persists, the blade may be blocked: wear gloves, free the blade and restart on short grass. If nothing works, contact a Hitachi service center.

How to adjust the cutting height?

Stop the engine and wait for the blade to stop. Press and hold the release lever on the side. For a shorter cut, push the lever towards the front wheel (min 2.8 cm); for a taller cut, towards the rear wheel (max 6.8 cm). Release the lever and engage it at the desired level.

How to clean the mower after use?

Use a brush or cloth to remove grass residue. Do not spray water to avoid damaging electrical components. Remove the release key before cleaning. Regularly check the condition of the blade and grass catcher.

When to sharpen or replace the blade?

If the blade is dull (uneven cut, engine struggling), have it sharpened by an authorized Hitachi service. In case of impact or deformation, replace the blade. The blade screw tightening torque must be 15 Nm +5. Always use a complete blade kit to avoid imbalance.

Which battery to use with the ML 36DAL mower?

Use only the original Hitachi BSL3625 battery (36 V lithium-ion). Do not use other models. Protect the battery from heat and moisture. For long-term storage (over 3 months), charge it fully beforehand.

Can I use the mower on a slope?

Yes, but only across the slope (do not go up or down). The angle must not exceed 20°. Be particularly careful when changing direction. Never mow over obstacles like branches or roots.

How to empty the grass catcher and put it back?

Stop the engine and wait for the blade to stop. Lift the deflector flap, unhook the catcher by pulling it backwards. Empty it. To put it back, lift the flap, hook the catcher onto the supports until it clicks. The fill level indicator helps you know when to empty.

What to do if the mower overheats?

The device has overheating protection: if the indicator flashes green (overheat standby), let it cool down. The engine will restart automatically after cooling. Avoid mowing very tall or wet grass to limit overload.

This document describes the battery-operated lawn mower with catcher.

Intended use

This appliance is intended for mowing laws in the private sector.

Any other use is deemed as being not in accordance with its intended use.

Possible misuse

This lawn mower is not intended for use in public grounds, parks, sporting arenas as well as in agriculture and forestry
The fitted safety devices must not be removed or bypassed, e.g. by tying the safety bar to the handle bar
Do not use the mower during rain and/or on a wet lawn

Safety and protective devices should not be disabled.

Safety bar

The mower is fitted with a safety bar. Simply release it in case of danger. Motor and cutting blade are then stopped.

Baffle

The baffle protects against objects flying out.

Safety key

To prevent the mower from being switched on unintentionally it has been fitted with a safety key. Switch the mower off before doing maintenance work and always pull out the safety key.

• Do not throw the battery into an open fire
  ■ Only use the battery and charger in areas that are protected against rain or moisture.
  ■ Protect the battery against heat and direct sunlight

Do not short-circuit the battery
■ Protect the mower, battery and charger against moisture
■ Use only original batteries and chargers from the manufacturer.
- Do not open the appliance. Danger of short circuit.
Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help.

Safety instructions for operation

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Unintentional start-up can lead to severe injuries. To prevent injuries always remove the safety key after switching the mower off!

After contact with foreign objects inspect the mower for damage. In case of serious damage take the mower to a Hitachi service center.

■ Remove the safety key when:

■ Leaving the mower unattended
- Inspecting, cleaning or servicing the mower
- Inserting the battery
■ Faults or unusual vibrations occur on the mower
■ Releasing blockages
■ Removing clogging
There is danger of coming into conta with foreign objects

Children, or other people who are not familia with the operating instructions, are not allowed to use the machine
- Observe local regulations regarding minimum age requirements for operating the machine.
The machine must not be operated if the operator is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.
Prior to each use check the mower and battery for damage and have the damaged parts replaced
Before using, always visually inspect to see that the blades, blade bolts and cutter assembly are not worn or damaged.
■ Remove all foreign objects from the lawn prior to mowing
■ Wear suitable work clothing:

Long trousers

■ Firm and antislip footwear

■ Always ensure stability when working.
- Keep others away from dangerous areas.
- Keep body and clothing away from cutting parts.
■ Work only when there is adequate daylight of artificial lighting.
■ Always push the mower forward, never move backwards
■ Never pull the mower toward the body
Do not mow over obstacles (e.g. branches: roots of trees).
■ Make sure the motor is stopped before you remove any cuttings.
■ Never lift or carry the mower while the motor is running
Never leave the mower unattended when it is ready for operation

ASSEMBLY

Assemble according to enclosed assembly instructions.

CAUTION!

The machine must not be put in operation before it has been assembled completely.

CHARGING BATTERY

Before using the power tool, charge the battery as follows.

1. Connect the charger's power cord to a receptacle. When connecting the plug of the charger to a receptacle, the pilot lamp will blink in red. (At 1-second intervals)
2. Insert the battery into the charger. Firmly insert the battery into the charger until the line is visible, as shown in Fig. 2, 3.
3. Charging When inserting a battery in the charger, charging will commence and the pilot lamp will light continuously in red. When the battery becomes fully recharged, the pilot lamp will blink in red. (At 1-second intervals) (See Table 1)
   (1) Pilot lamp indication The indications of the pilot lamp will be as shown in Table 1, according to the condition of the charger or the rechargeable battery.

(2) Regarding the temperature of the rechargeable battery.

The temperatures for rechargeable batteries are as shown in Table 2, and batteries that have become hot should be cooled for a while before being recharged.

(3) Regarding recharging time Depending on the combination of the charger and batteries, the charging time will become as shown in Table 3.

NOTE

The charging time may vary according to temperature and power source voltage.

1. Disconnect the charger's power cord from the receptacle
2. Hold the charger firmly and pull out the battery NOTE

After charging, pull out batteries from the charger first, and then keep the batteries properly.

The temperature range for the charging process should between 0^ C and +40^ C.

The maximum time for a full charge is 1,5 hours. If the operating period of the battery is greatly reduced in spite of a full charge, the battery is worn out and should be replaced with a new original battery.

BATTERY REMOVAL / INSTALLATION

Battery removal

Push the battery latch to remove the battery (6).

CAUTION

Never short-circuit the battery.

Battery installation

1. Press on the battery cover on the mower to open it.(4)
2. Remove the safety key from the mower.(5)
3. Press the pushbuttons together on the battery. (6a)
4. With a slight pressure push the battery into the battery compartment up to the stop until the battery sits firmly on the contact plug of the mower. (6b)
5. Insert the safety key again.(11a)
6. Press once on the battery cover to close it. (4)

OPERATION

Adjusting the cutting height (7)

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Adjust the cutting height only while motor is switched off and the cutting blade has stopped!

1. To unlock, press the lever to the side and hold (7).

For a short lawn slide the lever in the direction of the front wheel. Minimum step 1: 2.8 cm
For a longer lawn slide the lever in the direction of the rear wheel. Maximum step 6: 6.8 cm

1. Release the lever and slide it forward or backward until it engages in the desired step.

Handle bar adjustment (8)

1. Press the two buttons on the handle bars (8a)
2. Adjust to the desired height (8b)
3. Release the buttons and engage the handle bar.

Level indicator (9)

The level indicator is pressed upwards by the air stream during mowing (9a). When the grass catcher is full, the level indicator rests against the catcher (9b). The grass catcher needs to be emptied.

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Remove or replace the grass catcher only while the motor is switched off and the cutting blade has stopped.

1. Lift up the baffle plate (10a) and hang the grass catcher into the holders. (10b)

Emptying the grass catcher (10)

1. Lift the baffle plate.
2. Unhook the grass catcher and remove it to the rear.
3. Empty grass catcher.
4. Lift up the baffle plate and hang the grass catcher back into the holders. (10)

Switching on the motor (11)

Start the lawn mower only on level ground, and not in high grass. The ground must be free from foreign objects, such as stones. Do not lift or tilt the lawn mower to start it.

1. Insert the safety key again and turn it (11a).
2. Keep the start button pressed (11b).
3. Pull the safety bar toward the handle bar and hold it there (11c).
4. Release the start button.

Switching off the motor

1. Release the safety bar. (11c)
2. Wait until the cutter blade stops.
3. Remove the safety key from the mower (5).

Status display of battery (12)

All of battery illuminated: battery 100% - 67% charged
■ Half of battery illuminated: battery 66% - 34% charged

It is possible to select between normal and eco modes

Status display of Overheat (14)

If all 3 lamps blinks, high temperature status. Then it can not be start till cooled it down. When cooled it down, it can be started again.

WORKING INFORMATION

Observe the local regulations on operating lawn mowers.

• Keep others away from dangerous areas.
  ■ Use the mower only if visibility is good
  Guide the machine at walking pace.
  ■ Mow only with a sharp cutting blade
  Do not mow over obstacles (e.g. branches, roots of trees).
  ■ Mow only across slopes. Do not use the mower up or down slopes and not on slopes with more than a slant of 20 degrees.
  ■ Added care must be taken on slopes when changing direction
  The operating period of the lawn mower battery depends on the condition of the battery, the condition of the lawn and the setting of the cutting height. Frequently switching the mower on and off reduces the operating time

Optimum operating time is obtained by frequent mowing of the lawn and maintaining a short-cut lawn

Mowing tips

• Constant cutting height 3–5 cm, do not cut more than half the height of the lawn
  Do not overload the lawn mower! If the motor speed is greatly reduced due to long, heavy grass, raise the cutting height and mow several times
  Since wind and sun can dry out the lawn after mowing, mow the lawn in the late afternoon

STORAGE

Storing the battery-operated lawn mower

Storage

Fold the upper handle bar to save space during storage

■ Always store the mower with the battery and the safety key removed
■ Store the mower in a dry place and inaccessible to children and unauthorized persons

Storing the battery and charger

Make sure that the battery is fully charged after a lengthy period of storage (3 months or longer). If a battery has low capacity, it might be impossible to charge it up any longer following a lengthy period of storage.

■ Store the battery charger in a place where the temperature is below 40^ C and it is out of the reach of children

REPAIRS

■ Repairs must only be carried out at Hitad service centers or authorized specialist firms
■ Two avoid an imbalance the cutter unit and the retaining screw must only be replaced as a set.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Always remove the safety key before carrying out maintenance work! Always wear work gloves when carrying out maintenance on the cutter blade! Non-balanced cutter blades cause serious vibrations and damage the mower.

CAUTION!

Cutting blade and motor shaft may not be aligned if damaged!

■ Regularly check the grass catcher system for correct function and wear
■ After mowing, thoroughly clean the mowe with a hand broom or a cloth. Contamination left on the underside of the mower can impai its proper function
Do not hose down the mower with water! Water can damage the switch as well as the battery and the electric motor
Regularly check the cutter blade for damage Have the blunt or damaged cutter blades sharpened or replaced only at an Hitachi service center or authorized specialist firm. Resharpened cutter blades must be balance The tightening torque of the blade screw is 1 Nm +5
■ Ensure that all nuts, bolts and screws are tightened and that the machine is in a sa operational state.

• Let the motor cool down before storing the machine in a closed room.
  ■ Professional inspection is necessary:

■ After running onto an obstacle
■ When the motor is blocked
When the cutter blade is bent
■ When the motor shaft is bent
- When the battery is damaged, worn out

DISPOSAL

Do not dispose of worn-out machines or spent batteries (including rechargeable batteries) in domestic waste!

The packaging, machine and accessories are made from recyclable materials and must be disposed of accordingly.

■ Dispose of batteries only in a discharged state
The user is obligated to return the batteries and accumulators. These can be returned to the points of sale without charge.

The following options for disposal are available:

TRANSPORT

The battery has been tested according to the UN manual. That is why the battery is not subject to the national and international regulations concerning hazardous goods whether as individual item or when fitted to the mower.

• Transport the battery only when fitted to the mower or in its original packing.
  The regulations concerning hazardous goods could become effective when transporting several batteries.
