How to turn on the BDS200 detector?

To turn on the device, turn the sensitivity dial clockwise. To turn it off, turn it counterclockwise.

How to detect live cables?

Select electricity mode with the selection button. Adjust sensitivity until you hear a hum and see the red LED, then decrease slightly to stop. Test on a live outlet, then slowly sweep the wall.

How to detect metal conduits?

Select metal mode with the selection button. Adjust sensitivity until hum and green LED, then decrease. Test on a metal object, then sweep the wall.

What do the red and green LED indicators mean?

The red LED indicates detection of a live cable. The green LED indicates detection of a metal conduit.

Why is the device not detecting properly?

This may be due to a weak battery, thick walls, very deep conduits or wires, metal-covered walls, high humidity, or shielded cables. Always test on a known source before use.

How to adjust sensitivity?

Use the sensitivity dial: turn clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease. To fine-tune detection, gradually reduce sensitivity after locating an object.

What type of battery to use?

Use a 9V battery type 6LR61. Insert it by connecting the larger terminal to the smaller terminal on the connector.

How to change the battery?

Slide the battery cover off the device, disconnect the old battery, connect the new one respecting polarity, then replace the cover until it clicks.

Intended use

This Black & Decker tool has been designed to aid in locating live wires operating at mains voltage (230 V AC) and metal pipes behind internal walls. This tool is intended for consumer use only.

Additional safety instructions for non-rechargeable batteries

◆ Never attempt to open for any reason.

Do not store in locations where the temperature may exceed 40 °C.

Under extreme conditions, battery leakage may occur. When you notice liquid on the batteries, proceed as follows:
- Carefully wipe the liquid off using a cloth. Avoid skin contact.

Additional safety instructions for pipe and wire detectors

Do not use the tool to detect AC voltage in uninsulated, exposed or free wires.
◆ Do not use the tool as a substitute for a voltmeter.
- Be aware that the tool may not always properly detect all pipes and wires. The following conditions can cause inaccurate results:
- Low battery
- Thick walls with thin pipes or wires
- Very thick walls
- Very deep wires or pipes
- Walls covered with metal
- Very humid conditions
- Shielded cables
◆ Before use, always test the tool by detecting a known pipe or wire.
◆ If in doubt contact a qualified contractor.

Warning! This tool will not detect wires in circuits isolated from the mains supply, cables operating at direct current (DC) or wires used for telecommunication or computer systems. Hidden wires (e.g. wall lights) may not be detected when switches are in the off position.

Warning! This tool will not detect pipes of any other material than metal.

Fitting the battery (fig. B)

◆ Slide the battery cover (4) off the tool.
- Connect the battery to the connector. The larger battery terminal connects to the smaller connector terminal.

◆ Refit the cover and let it click into place.

Use

Switching on and off

◆ To switch the tool on, turn the sensitivity dial (3) clockwise.
◆ To switch the tool off, turn the sensitivity dial counterclockwise.

Detecting live wires (fig. C)

Warning! Test the unit on a known source of AC current before use.

◆ Make sure unit is away from area being scanned and any other AC current source.
◆ Set the mode selector switch (1) to the electricity symbol.
- Turn the sensitivity dial clockwise until the buzzer sounds and the red LED indicator is on.
- Slowly turn the dial counterclockwise until the buzzer stops sounding and the red LED indicator is off.
◆ Test the unit by holding it adjacent to a plug connected to a live socket. Confirm the operation of the red LED indicator and the buzzer.

The unit is now ready for use and is set to maximum sensitivity.

• While holding the unit with one hand place your other hand on the surface close to the area being scanned.
  ◆ Move the detector slowly and smoothly across the surface area, approaching from different directions.

When an AC source is located, the red LED indicator will blink and the buzzer will sound intermittently.

- After detecting the work area repeat the testing procedure to confirm the operation of the unit.

Detecting metal pipes (fig. C)

Warning! Test the unit on a known metal object before use.

◆ Make sure unit is away from area being scanned or any other metal objects when preparing for use.
◆ Set the mode selector switch (1) to the metal symbol.
- Turn the sensitivity dial clockwise until the buzzer sounds and the green LED indicator is on.
- Slowly turn the dial counterclockwise until the buzzer stops sounding and the green LED indicator is off.
◆ Test the unit by holding it adjacent to an exposed metal object. Confirm the operation of the green LED indicator and the buzzer.

The unit is now ready for use and is set to maximum sensitivity.

When a metal object is detected, the buzzer will sound and the green LED indicator will come on.

Hints for optimum use

- After detecting a hidden object, the sensitivity of the unit can be gradually reduced to maximise the accuracy. Slightly turn the sensitivity dial counterclockwise and continue to move the tool across the detected area from different directions until the location of the hidden object is more accurately defined.

Protecting the environment

Separate collection. This product must not be disposed of with normal household waste.

Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not dispose of it with household waste. Make this product available for separate collection.

Separate collection of used products and packaging allows materials to be recycled and used again. Re-use of recycled materials helps prevent environmental pollution and reduces the demand for raw materials.

Local regulations may provide for separate collection of electrical products from the household, at municipal waste sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product.
