NOTE ON DOMESTIC ACCIDENTS
Especially for a child, a burn, even a slight one, can sometimes be very serious. In 9 cases out of 10, burns are accidental (source Ministry of the Interior 2021). They are mainly caused by contact with hot liquids, which are the main cause of burns in children aged 0-4.
Reflexes to avoid burns to children: keep your child away from hot appliances. Never leave them alone in the kitchen. Never leave hot liquids within the reach of your children. To avoid burns and fires, never leave flammable objects (candles, etc.) within their reach.
What to do in the event of a boiling liquid burn: if the clothes and underwear are made of natural fabric (wool, linen, cotton): Remove them immediately, if possible, with scissors. Shower the burned area with cool (not cold) water for 10 minutes to limit the depth of the injury. Protect the burned area with a clean cloth and go to the nearest hospital emergency room. If clothing and underwear are made of synthetic material: Do not remove the last layer of clothing in contact with the skin and shower as before. Indeed, synthetic fabrics stick to the skin in second degree burns, which are common with boiling water.
In all cases: if the burn victim is very young, or if the burn appears to be very serious, it is advisable to call the fire brigade directly on 18 or the SAMU on 15 or the European emergency number 112, giving the exact coordinates of the place where he is. Do not apply butter, toothpaste, oil, vinegar, urine, etc. to the burns. Biogas dressings (green in color) are forbidden for young children because of the presence of camphor (intoxication, convulsions, and coma).
