Frequently Asked Questions - 39812 Märklin

How to connect the 39812 locomotive to a Märklin digital layout?
The locomotive is compatible with Märklin AC, Delta, Digital and DCC systems. It automatically identifies itself in mfx mode. For digital operation, connect it to your Central Station or Mobile Station. The factory address is MM 51 / DCC 03.
What is the minimum curve radius for this model?
The minimum curve radius is 360 mm. To avoid derailment, respect this value and reduce speed in tight curves.
Why won't my locomotive start?
This model requires a high starting current due to its weight. Do not turn the throttle to 100% immediately. If start is too rapid, the motor control cuts off for safety reasons. Also check the power supply and contacts.
How to adjust sound and light functions?
Functions are accessed via buttons F0 to F31 on Mobile Station or Central Station. Consult the function table in the manual. In analog mode, only directional lighting and driving are available.
Can I use M track with this locomotive?
Märklin C or K track is recommended. M track can be used but with wider tolerances due to wear; problems may occur, especially at switches, at very low or very high speeds.
How to maintain wheels and contacts?
For reliable wheel-rail contact, clean wheels regularly with a lint-free cloth. Do not modify current-conducting parts. Use interference suppression set (ref. 74046) in conventional mode.
What to do if the pantograph is stuck?
Do not manually operate the pantograph. Use functions F6, F8, F20 or F21 to raise or lower it via the controller. If problem persists, contact your Märklin dealer for repair.
Where to find spare parts?
Spare parts are listed in the manual (pages 38-43). Contact your specialized Märklin dealer or the Märklin repair service to order parts.
How to activate 'Train Driver' mode?
The 'Train Driver' game mode is described in the supplementary manual. It allows managing driving scenarios. Some functions (like F25-F29 for signals) are only available when stationary.
Is the locomotive compatible with the Delta system?
Yes, the locomotive is compatible with the Märklin Delta system. In Delta mode, only basic functions are available (driving and directional lighting). For all functions, use a Digital system with mfx.

  • This locomotive is to be used only with an operating system designed for it (Märklin AC, Märklin Delta, Märklin Digital or DCC).
  • The feeder track must be equipped to prevent interference with radio and television reception, when the locomotive is to be run in conventional operation. The 74046 interference suppression set is to be used for this purpose.
  • WARNING! Sharp edges and points required for operation.
  • The LEDs in this item correspond to Laser Class 1 according to Standard EN 60825-1.

Important Notes

  • The current version of these operating instructions can be found at www.maerklin.de on the page for this product under „Downloads“.
  • The operating instructions and the packaging are a component part of the product and must therefore be kept as well as transferred along with the product to others.
  • Please see your authorized Märklin dealer for repairs or spare parts.
  • Disposing: www.maerklin.com/en/imprint.html
  • General Note to Avoid Electromagnetic Interference:

A permanent, flawless wheel-rail contact is required in order to guarantee operation for which a model is designed. Do not make any changes to current-conducting parts.

Notes about using this model for the first time

  • This model needs a great deal of current to start up due to its considerable weight. You should therefore be careful when starting the locomotive without acceleration and braking delay (ABV) that the locomotive controller is not immediately turned up 100%. The motor control shuts off for safety reasons when the locomotive is started up too quickly.
  • Minimum radius for operation is 360 mm / 14-3/16".
  • Sharp curves and turnouts with sharp curves should only be negotiated at moderate speed, however.
  • Due to the prototypical execution of this model, very high demands are placed on the precision and execution of the track material used. While the Märklin C or K Track meets these standards, M Track might not always meet them due to greater tolerances caused by years of operation. For that reason you may have operating problems in these situations when running the rail bus at extremely slow speeds or fast speeds through turnouts.
  • This model is larger than the customary European loading gauge. It swings out quite a ways, chiefly on curves. Please check before using this model for the first time, to make sure that it can operate on your layout without hitting signals, catenary masts, bridge railings, tunnel portals, etc.
    • Power cannot be supplied from the catenary.
  • Fitted pickup shoe switching. The motor therefore always receives its voltage from the front power end car.
  • The pantograph may not be moved by hand.
