Using the Product as Intended

This model is to be used only with an operating system designed for it (Marklin AC, Marklin Delta, Marklin Digital, DCC or Marklin Systems).

Safety Notes

Make sure you read the following safety notes before using this Marklin product for the first time.

• The distilled water required for this model is not suitable for human consumption. In case of injury from accidental consumption of distilled water, go immediately to your doctor or an emergency clinic.
• This model may be supplied with power only from an appropriate power source. (example: DC 18V / max. 36VA).
• Pay close attention to the safety notes in the instructions for your operating system.
• The feeder track must be equipped to prevent interference with radio and television reception, when the model is to be run in conventional operation. The 74046 interference suppression set is to be used for this purpose.
• WARNING! Sharp edges and points required for operation.
• Do not expose the model to direct sunlight, extreme changes in temperature, or high humidity.
• The LEDs in this item correspond to Laser Class 1 according to Standard EN 60825-1.

Important Notes

• This locomotive has a built-in steam unit based on cold steam. It therefore has two openings on the roof. One opening is for filling the locomotive with distilled water, and the cold steam unit is built into the other opening.
• The current version of these operating instructions can be found at www.maerklin.de on the page for this product under „Downloads".
• The operating instructions and the packaging are a component part of the product and must therefore be kept as well as transferred along with the product to others.
• When lubricating the locomotive mechanism make sure before putting the locomotive body back on that the gasket rings for the cold steam unit and the water tank are placed correctly. See the illustration on Page 38.
• Please see your authorized Märklin dealer for repairs or spare parts.

Notes about the Cold Steam Unit

• Only distilled water should be used for the cold steam unit. This type of water is not included with the locomotive.
• The steam slot on the cold steam unit may not be covered when the unit is in operation.

• During operation, an air bubble may form at the steam opening, which will hinder the production of steam. This can be prevented by blowing lightly into the steam opening. In most cases, the air bubble will dissolve on its own after a short time.

• If possible, operate the cold steam unit only when the locomotive is running. Otherwise, too much moisture can fall in one place. When the locomotive is at a stop, the cold steam unit shuts off automatically after 60 seconds. When the locomotive starts going again, the cold steam unit is activated again.

• The cold steam unit should not be turned on when the locomotive is being run on M Track (risk of corrosion!).
• Be careful when going through a tunnel that has construction materials sensitive to water or that has concealed electronics!
• When using the cold steam unit, water that has built up on the sides of the locomotive should be wiped at regular intervals with a cloth to prevent water from dripping onto the model railroad layout.
• If the cold steam unit chirps like a bird, the water tank is empty.
• The function of the cold steam unit can be left on without distilled water in the tank - this will not cause damage to the model.
• The locomotive should not be turned upside down as long as there is water in the tank. Otherwise, the distilled water will run out!
• If the locomotive falls over on the layout - set it upright on the track immediately!
• Do not damage the cold steam unit with the point of the pipette.

• The pipette included with the locomotive should only be used for distilled water.

• Before putting the locomotive back in its packaging, the distilled water in the tank should be completely used up in the cold steam unit and the locomotive should be allowed to dry in the air. Vaporization must take place when the locomotive is in motion, since otherwise the steam unit will shut off automatically after 60 seconds.

  Automatic system recognition with priority for mfx. (Priority 2: DCC / Priority 3: MM)
• Individual protocols can be deactivated with Parameter CV 50.
• Setting the locomotive parameters (address, acceleration/braking delay (ABV), maximum speed): with the Control Unit, Mobile Station, Central Station.
• Headlights, changing over with the direction of travel.
• Various controllable functions.
• Only the train control functions and headlight changeover feature are available in analog operation.

Filling the Steam Unit

Pour distilled water only in the correct roof opening. The roof opening for the tank is closed with a rubber cork. This rubber cork must be removed when filling the tank and after that put back in the opening.

Filling with a pipette provides about 3 milliliters / 0.10 fluid ounces.

Tank holds about 7 milliliters / 0.24 fluid ounces - do not overfill!

If water accidentally overflows when filling the water tank or if larger amounts of water land on the locomotive during operation, this should be removed with a cloth.

The close coupling from 72000 (E357874) is mounted on this locomotive. We recommend to also mount the close coupling from 72000 on the wagons to be coupled.

Note: Several parts are offered unpainted or in another color. Parts that are not listed here can only be repaired by the Märklin repair service department. Please note that the spare parts for this model weathered at the factory are only available in non-weathered version.

General Note to Avoid Electromagnetic Interference:

A permanent, flawless wheel-rail contact is required in order to

guarantee operation for which a model is designed.

Do not make any changes to current-conducting parts.

The firm Gebr. Märklin & Cie. GmbH grants a voluntary manufacturer's guarantee of 24 months for this product from the purchase date (maximum of 60 months from appearance in the catalog) from an authorized Märklin specialty dealer.
