Frequently Asked Questions - RIVER mosel Palmer

What types of instruments can I connect to the mosel direct box?
You can connect string instruments (acoustic, electric guitars, basses), line outputs of keyboards, or speaker outputs of guitar amplifiers (with Pad activated) via the jack or XLR inputs.
How do I power the mosel direct box?
Power is supplied either by 48 V phantom power (via the XLR output cable) or by a 9 V battery (type 6LR61). Use the rear selector P48V/BATTERY to choose the source.
What are the PAD switches for?
The PAD switches (0/10 dB and 0/20 dB) attenuate the input level to avoid saturating the mixing console or audio interface. When both are pressed, they reduce the signal by 30 dB.
How do I use the ground lift (LIFT/GND)?
The LIFT/GND selector (not pressed = Lift) disconnects the ground connection between input and output to eliminate hum (ground loops). The pressed position restores ground. Test both positions to find which reduces noise.
Can I use a guitar amplifier with the mosel?
Yes, but the amplifier power must not exceed 120 W into 8 ohms. With tube amplifiers, always connect a speaker cabinet or a load to the THRU jack before turning it on, as the mosel does not provide a load resistance.
How do I test the battery status?
Press the BATTERY TEST button (on the rear). If the orange LED lights up, the battery is good. If it does not light up, replace the battery with a new 9 V one.
What is the difference between GND SOFT and GND HARD?
In SOFT position, the ground is connected via an RC circuit; in HARD position, the connection is direct. The choice depends on the installation: SOFT can reduce hum while maintaining a ground reference.
Can I use the mosel outdoors?
The device is designed for temporary indoor use only. It is not suitable for tropical climates or altitudes above 2,000 m. Avoid humidity and extreme temperatures.
What to do in case of humming?
First check the ground lift (point 3). If the noise persists, move the device away from sources of strong magnetic fields (transformers, etc.). Ensure cables are properly shielded.
How to clean the mosel direct box?
Disconnect the device and remove the battery. Clean the housing with a dry cloth. Do not use solvents, abrasives, or liquids. Ensure no moisture enters the interior.

MANUFACTURER'S DECLARATIONS 15

Let your signals flow, naturally and powerfully like a river! The River Series embodies this claim down to the last detail: highly precise switches designed by our award-winning engineers ensure that sound reaches its destination undistorted – the heart of your listeners.

That's exactly what Palmer® stands for. We have been manufacturing audio tools for professional use on stage, in broadcasting, and in the studio since 1980. Musicians and sound engineers around the world value our solutions developed in Germany for their unhindered signal flow and pure sound – as crystal clear and vibrant as water! So what was more logical than naming the River Series models after German rivers?

On the map of Germany, you can see that the 544 km long Moselle (German: Mosel) river originates in France and flows through Germany along the Saarland-Luxembourg border and finally through Rhineland-Palatinate.

Thank you for purchasing the mosel! We hope you enjoy this piece of German engineering. Be true to your sound!

Yours, the Palmer Team

INTRODUCTION

The one-channel DI box mosel is a professional studio and stage tool that transforms unbalanced audio signals into balanced audio signals without any distortion. The internal transformer offers an excellent dynamic range and outstanding overload stability. The DI box is used as a connecting link to connect string instruments with pickups (for example, electric acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and electric basses), instruments with line outputs (for example, keyboards), and speaker outputs from guitar amplifiers to balanced inputs of a mixer or audio interface. In addition, the DI box allows for interference-free transmission of audio signals over long cable runs.

Palmer RIVER mosel - INTRODUCTION - 1

WARNING: Power amplifiers may not be operated in Bridge mode on the DI box.

Palmer RIVER mosel - INTRODUCTION - 2

WARNING: If an amplifier is operated on the DI box, the ground connection between the input and output must be disconnected (switch no. 6 in the non-pressed LIFT position).

Palmer RIVER mosel - INTRODUCTION - 3

WARNING: A connected amplifier's output must not exceed 120 W at 8 ohms!

Palmer RIVER mosel - INTRODUCTION - 4

ATTENTION: If a tube amplifier is used: there is no load resistor in the DI box circuit! To prevent damage to the amplifier, an appropriate guitar speaker or a suitable load resistor must be connected to the THRU jack socket using a speaker cable before switching on the amplifier!

CONNECTIONS AND OPERATING/DISPLAY ELEMENTS - BACK

7. GND SOFT/HARD

SOFT: The ground connection between the input and output is established via an RC element. HARD: There is a direct ground connection between the input and output.

8. LIFT / GND

Switch for disconnecting the ground connection between the input and output (ground lift). The ground connection is disconnected in the unpressed position. The connection is established when the switch is pressed (see item 9 GND SOFT/HARD). The ability to prevent a humming loop using the ground lift switch depends on the grounding of the connected devices. It is therefore possible that either switch position effectively reduces or eliminates humming.

9. OUTPUT

Balanced audio output with a male three-pin XLR socket. Use a balanced, shielded cable (for example, microphone cable) in order connect the DI box to a mixer's or audio interface's balanced output.

10. POWER OFF/ON

On/off switch. As soon as the device is switched on and the required voltage is applied, the corresponding LED indicator lights up. Always make sure that the channel volume for a connected mixer or audio interface is set to minimum before switching the device on or off.

11. P48 V / BATTERY

Switch for selecting the power source (switch not pressed = phantom power/switch pressed = battery). Always make sure that the channel volume for a connected mixer or audio interface is set to minimum before switching the power source.

12. BATTERY TEST

Button for displaying the battery status. If the charging status is sufficient, the corresponding LED indicator lights up orange when the button is pressed. Replace the battery if the LED does not light up when the button is pressed. The battery status can also be displayed when the device is switched off.

13. BATTERY COMPARTMENT

Battery compartment for a 9 V block battery. Only use leak-proof brand products. To replace the battery, open the device's battery compartment by pushing the battery compartment lid's locking lever downwards and folding the lid forward. Remove the depleted battery and insert a new battery in the battery compartment. Make sure that the battery polarity matches the battery compartment polarity (see marking on the battery compartment lid). Put the battery compartment lid back on the housing until it clicks into place. If you do not use the device for a long period, remove the battery to prevent damage to the device from a leaking battery.

Alternative power supply via 48 V phantom power via the OUTPUT XLR socket. Always make sure that the cable is connected to the audio output and that the channel volume for a connected mixer or audio interface is set to minimum before switching on phantom power. Before disconnecting the cable from the device, turn the channel volume to minimum and then deactivate phantom power.

Palmer RIVER mosel - BATTERY COMPARTMENT - 1

ATTENTION: Connecting signal cables can cause significant interference noise. Make sure that devices connected to the output channel (mixer, audio interface, etc.) and the THRU output are muted while making connections. Otherwise, noise levels may cause damage.

Palmer RIVER mosel - BATTERY COMPARTMENT - 2

PLEASE NOTE: The line outputs on the front and rear are galvanically isolated from the line inputs.
