Frequently Asked Questions - Elde Palmer

What is the Palmer Elde direct box?
The Palmer Elde is a 2-channel passive direct box (DI) designed to convert unbalanced audio signals into balanced signals without alteration, ideal for instruments, keyboards, and speaker outputs.
How to connect an instrument to the Elde?
Connect your instrument to the INPUT 1 or 2 (6.35 mm jack) using a shielded cable. For an amplifier speaker output, use a speaker cable and activate the Pad (30 dB) if necessary.
What is the PAD selector for?
The PAD selector attenuates the input signal by 30 dB. Use it if the input level saturates the next stage (console or audio interface).
What is the function of the LIFT/GND selector?
The Ground Lift switch interrupts the ground connection between input and output, eliminating hum caused by ground loops. Try both positions to see which reduces noise.
Can I use a tube guitar amplifier with the Elde?
Yes, but be careful: the Elde does not contain a load resistor. You must connect a speaker or appropriate load to the THRU output before turning on the amplifier to avoid damage.
What is the maximum amplifier power supported?
The maximum power of the connected amplifier must not exceed 120 W at 8 ohms. The amplifier must not operate in bridged mode.
What are the output connectors?
The balanced outputs are on 3-pin male XLR connectors (OUTPUT 1 and 2). Use shielded microphone cables to connect to a console or interface.
How to clean and maintain the Elde?
Clean the housing with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid moisture and solvents. Do not open the device. Store in a dry, dust-free place.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Elde?
The Elde measures 140 x 50 x 128 mm (HxWxD) and weighs 0.66 kg. Its housing is one-piece cast aluminum.
Is the Elde suitable for home use?
No, this product is intended for professional use (studio, stage, TV, radio). It is not suitable for home use or untrained persons.

INTRODUCTION

The elde 2-channel DI box is a professional tool for studio and stage, which converts unbalanced audio signals unaltered into balanced audio signals. The elde DI box is used as a link to connect stringed instruments with pick-ups – such as electro-acoustic guitars, electric guitars and electric basses, instruments with line outputs, such as keyboards, and speaker outputs of guitar amplifiers – to balanced inputs of a mixing console or audio interface. Audio signals can also be transmitted hum-free over long cable runs with the help of the DI box.

CONNECTIONS AND OPERATING ELEMENTS

1. INPUT 1 / INPUT 2

Audio input with 6.3 mm jack socket.

A. Connect an instrument using a shielded instrument cable.
B. Connect the speaker output of a guitar amplifier using a speaker cable. (Tip: Press PAD switch no. 4).

Palmer Elde - INPUT 1 / INPUT 2 - 1

WARNING: Power amplifiers must not be operated in bridge mode on the DI box.

Palmer Elde - INPUT 1 / INPUT 2 - 2

WARNING: If an amplifier is operated using the DI box, the ground connection between the and output must be disconnected (switch no. 6 in the non-pressed LIFT position).

Palmer Elde - INPUT 1 / INPUT 2 - 3

WARNING: The amplifier power of a connected amplifier must not exceed 120 W at 8 Ohms.

Palmer Elde - INPUT 1 / INPUT 2 - 4

ATTENTION: When using a tube amplifier: there is no tube in the circuit of the DI box circuit! To prevent damage to the amplifier, before switching on the amplifier, an appropriate guitar speaker or a suitable load resistor at the THRU jack socket must be connected using a speaker cable.

2. THRU 1 / THRU 2

The input signals are output unchanged via the 6.3 mm jack sockets.

3. OUTPUT 1 / OUTPUT 2

Balanced audio outputs with male 3-pin XLR connectors. Use a balanced, shielded cable (e.g. microphone cable) to connect the DI box to balanced inputs of a mixing console or audio interface.

4. PAD 1 / PAD 2 (Passive Attenuation Device)

Move the corresponding switch to the pressed position to lower the level of the output signal by 30 dB. Lowering the output level is necessary if the channel input stage of the connected mixer or audio interface is overdriven.

5. LIFT / GND 1 - LIFT / GND 2

Switch for disconnecting the ground connection of input and output of the corresponding channel (ground lift). In the non-pressed position, the ground connection is disconnected; the connection is established when the switch is pressed. The ability to prevent a humming loop using the ground lift switch depends on the grounding of the connected device. It is therefore possible that the switch is able to effectively reduce or eliminate humming when it is either up or down, depending on circumstances.

Palmer Elde - LIFT / GND 1 - LIFT / GND 2 - 1

CAUTION: Connecting signal cables can cause considerable noise. Please make sure that the input channel (mixing console, audio interface, etc.), as well as the THRU output, are muted when plugged in. Otherwise, noise levels may cause damage.

NOTE: Strong magnetic fields can cause humming. Therefore, do not position the DI Box near strong magnetic fields (e.g. mains transformer).
