- Turn the knob to the right (clockwise) to increase the air volume.
- Turn the knob to the left (counter clockwise) to decrease the air volume.23
- Select the temperature according to the soldering process you want to perform. In any case, the temperature must be higher than the melting point of the solder. Toensurethatthesoldermeltsquicklyandowssmoothly, thetemperatureofthesolderingstationshouldbeset toatleast50°Chigherthanthemeltingpointofthesolder. Soldering for excessively long periods may damage many types of components due to prolonged heat exposure. It is therefore advisable to select a higher soldering tip temperature to keep the soldering process as short as possible. However, selecting an excessive temperature can also cause problems (e.g. damage components).
- If you need to heat large quantities of solder (e.g. for a large soldering joint or a soldering joint that dissipates heat, such as a cooling plate), you can set a higher temperature.
- After setting the desired temperature, the product requires a few seconds until the soldering tip reaches the desired temperature.
- As soon as the temperature is reached, remove the soldering iron from the soldering iron holder. Risk of burns! Only hold the soldering iron by the plastic handle. Never touch the hot tip or the metal shaft.
- Thesoldershouldmeltinstantlyuponcontactwiththesolderingtip.Risingsmokeiscausedbyevaporatingux contained inside the solder.
- For larger soldering joints, increase the temperature to speed up the soldering process. Only use the highest temperature setting for as long as necessary to avoid overloading the soldering tip.
- Reducethetemperatureofthesolderingironduringbreaks.Thissavesenergyandprolongsthelifespanofthe soldering tip.
- Always place the soldering iron into the soldering iron holder when it is heating up and cooling down and when you are not soldering.
- Make sure that the soldering tip is well coated with tin when taking breaks or before switching the soldering station off.
- Ensure that the soldering contacts on the workpiece are clean. Only use solder designed for electronic work. Acidic solder may damage the soldering tip or the work piece.
- Heatthesolderingjointwithsolderingtipandapply thesolderatthe sametime.Removethe solderfromthe solderingjoint. Then, removethe solderingtip.Complete thesolderingprocess quicklytoavoid damagingthe workpiece (e.g. dislocated conductors or overheating components).
- Allow the soldering joint to cool down. Depending on the size of the soldering joint, it may take 1–2 seconds for the solder to harden. During this time, do not move the soldered component to prevent the formation of a so-called cold soldering joint. Thesolderjointhasadullsilverappearance, doesnotprovidegoodelectricalcontactnormechanicalxation. A correctly soldered joint should shine in a similar way to chrome.24
- Cleananyuxresiduefromthesolderingtipoccasionally(e.g.withadampsponge).Todothis,brieywipethe soldering tip. Do not press the tip into the damp sponge. Never hold the soldering tip against the sponge for too long to prevent damage to the sponge. Ensurethatthespongeissufcientlydamp.Nevercleanthesolderingtipwithadrysponge! As an alternative to the sponge, use a separately available dry cleaner. Mechanical damage to the soldering tip destroys the protective coating and reduces its lifespan. Do not clean the soldering tip with sharp objects or a metal brush.
- Removeanyuxresiduefromthesolderingtipbeforesoldering.Thenreapplytintothesolderingtip.Applyasmall amount of tin to the soldering tip, ensuring that the tin forms an even layer on the tip. This prevents corrosion on the soldering tip. Then place the soldering iron into the soldering iron holder. Switch off the soldering station. Risk of burns! It takes about 10–15 minutes for the soldering iron to cool down completely. Do not touch the soldering tip or holder during this time. b) Hot air nozzle Proceed as described in the previous section above and also observe the following notes: Risk of burns! Touch the hot air nozzle only by the plastic handle. Never touch the hot nozzle or the metal shaft. Never point the hot air jet toward your body. Risk of re and explosion! Otherwise, there may be an excessive heating of the component.25
- Ifthecomponentyouwishtodesolderisdefective(forexample, alargeIC),youcanpointthenozzledirectly at the component and not at the pins. Especially in the case of components with connection pins on each side, desoldering may be practically impossible.
- When desoldering, always make sure that the conductor paths are not heated up, otherwise they may detach from the carrier material.
- PleaseremovetheICwithpincersortweezersassoonasthesolderingtinismelted.
- After you have removed the component, you can remove the remaining soldering tin with a desoldering suction pump (not included).
10. Use as a hot air blower
- The hot air nozzle can also be used for heating suitable objects, for example, for shrinking shrink tubes.
- Depending on the size of the object, the hot air nozzle can be operated with or without the nozzle. Make sure when heating that no surrounding components/objects can be damaged. Inthecaseofimproperhandlingorheatingofunsuitableobjects,thereisdangerofre/explosion! Never point the hot air jet toward your body, risk of burns/injury! Heatingobjectsmaycausetoxicandharmfulgasestoform.Therefore,alwaysensuresufcientventilation.
11. Changing the soldering tip
Use a suitable soldering tip depending on the soldering job at hand. Youcan ndsuitableaccessoriesontheproductrelatedwebsiteatwww.conrad.com. Enter the order number into the search bar. Only use soldering tips that are recommended for use with the soldering station. The use of other soldering tips can lead to a false temperature reading (the actual temperature of the soldering tip does not match the temperature display). In addition, the heating element can be damaged. This leads to a loss of the warranty. Whenworkingonsmallcomponents, useaverynesolderingtip. However, whensolderingonlargercomponents, asolderingtipwithabroader/attipshouldbeused.Alargersolderingtipcantransfermoreheatsothesoldering process goes more quickly.26 The soldering tip is subjected to a mechanical and thermal load during use. Over time, the soldering tip will becomeblunt(especiallywithverynesolderingtips),meaningthatyouwillnotbeabletosolderprecisely on small components. The lifespan of the soldering tip depends on several factors. For example, high soldering temperatures signicantlyreducethelifespan. Proceed as follows to change the soldering tip:
- Turn off the soldering station and let the soldering iron cool down completely.
- Loosentheknurledcapnutonthemetalshaftofthesolderingiron.Removethecapnutandthemetalsleeve. The heating/cooling process may cause the cap nut to become very tight. If so, loosen the cap nut with a pair of pliers. However, do not use any force, as this may damage the heating element. This leads to a loss of the warranty.
- Removethesolderingtipfromtheheatingelement.
- Install a new soldering tip on the heating element.
- Replacethemetalsleeveandthecapnut.Tightenthettingsmanually.Donotuseanyforcewhenscrewingtight.
12. Care and cleaning
Never use aggressive detergents, rubbing alcohol or other chemical solutions, as these could damage the casing or stop the product from functioning properly.
- Always disconnect the product from the power supply before cleaning it. Disconnect the mains plug from the mains socket.
- Before cleaning, let all components cool down completely.
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth to clean the station.
- Before turning off the product, the soldering tip must be well coated in tin. This prevents corrosion on the soldering tip and prolongs its lifespan.27
