Frequently Asked Questions - 460 Testo

How to turn on and off the Testo 460?
To turn on, briefly press the button. To turn off, hold down the button for 2 seconds until the display turns off.
How to change the batteries of the Testo 460 tachometer?
Open the battery compartment by sliding the cover downwards. Remove the used batteries and insert two new AAA (1.5 V) batteries, observing polarity. Close the cover.
What to do if the display shows 'Hi' or 'Lo'?
'Hi' or 'Lo' indicates that the measurement is outside the permitted range (100-30,000 rpm) or that the battery capacity is below 10 minutes. Check the measurement and replace the batteries if necessary.
How to set the number of blades for a fan?
In measurement mode, press the Mode button repeatedly until 'NO.' appears. Use the ▲/▼ buttons to set the number of blades (e.g., 3, 5, etc.). Confirm with the button. The device then divides the measured value by this number.
How to use Hold, Max and Min mode?
Press the Mode button to cycle through the options: Hold (holds the last measured value), Max (displays the maximum value since the start of measurement), Min (displays the minimum value). Use ▲/▼ to select.
What is the ideal distance for measuring with the Testo 460?
The ideal distance between the sensor and the object is 10 to 40 cm. Aim at the reflective strip at an angle of approximately 30° to avoid multiple reflections.
How to activate the display illumination?
Press the illumination button (symbol) when the device is on. The illumination stays active for 10 seconds and then turns off automatically.
How to disable the auto-off function?
When turning on, hold down the button until the configuration mode appears. Select 'Auto Off' with ▲/▼, then choose 'OFF' to disable. Confirm with the button.
What safety precautions should be followed?
Never use the device near rotating parts without respecting safety distances. Avoid contact with solvents, acids, or aggressive substances. Use only recommended batteries.
How to clean the housing of the Testo 460?
Clean the housing with a damp cloth (soapy water). Do not use solvents or aggressive cleaning products. For stubborn dirt, contact Testo customer service.

1 To open the battery compartment, push the battery cover down.
2 Insert batteries (2x 1.5 V type AAA). Observe the polarity!
3 To close the battery compartment, push the battery cover back on.

▶ Basic settings (configuration mode):

Adjustable functions

· Unit of rotational speed: rpm, rps
- Auto off function: OFF, ON (instrument switches off automatically if no key is pressed for 10 minutes)
1 When switching the instrument on, press and hold until ▲ and ▶ appear on the display (configuration mode).
- The adjustable function is displayed. The current setting flashes.

2 Press ⬆ (▲) several times until the desired setting flashes.

3 Press Ⓜ(←) to confirm the input.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all functions. - The instrument changes to measuring mode.

Using the product

For reliable measurements it is necessary to use reflective markers. To apply the reflective marker, wait until the object to be measured has come to a standstill.

The ideal distance to the measurement object is between 10 and 40 cm. During the measurement, always aim at the reflective marker from an angle of approx. 30^ . This avoids multiple reflections from the surface.

If no reflective marker can be attached, it must be checked whether the reflective properties of a reflective point on the measurement object are sufficient for rpm measurement. In this case, aim at the measurement object from the vertical, and check whether a value is displayed. If the measurement object displays several reflections per revolution, (e.g. reflective ventilator with 5 vanes), the number of the impulses per revolution (e.g. number of ventilator vanes) must be entered into the instrument (see below) in order to obtain correct rpm measurements.

▶ Switching the instrument on:

Press

- Measuring mode is opened.

▶ Switching the display light on:

√ The instrument is switched on.

Press©.

- The display light goes out automatically if no key is pressed for 10 seconds.

➢ Changing the display view/setting the number of blades:

As an alternative to entering the impulses per revolution, the setting NO.1 can be selected and the rpm calculated manually from the measurement value (measurement value divided by impulse/number of vanes)

Adjustable views/setting the number of blades

  • Hold: Readings are held.
  • Max: Maximum values since the start of the last measurement.
  • Min: Minimum values since the start of the last measurement.
  • NO.: Set the number of blades. Change the value with

Press several times until the desired view appears.
