What type of battery does the Scheppach COS125 sander use?

How do I attach the abrasive sheet to the pad?

The abrasive sheet attaches simply via Velcro (hook and loop) to the sanding pad. To remove, pull the sheet.

Can I use this sander for wet sanding?

No, the device is designed only for dry sanding. Water ingress increases the risk of electric shock.

How do I empty the dust bag?

Remove the dust bag from the extraction hose, empty it, and tap it to maintain optimal suction. Do this regularly.

What should I do if the sander does not start?

Check that the battery is charged and properly installed. If the problem persists, contact customer service.

What are the important safety instructions?

Wear safety goggles, a dust mask, and hearing protection. Do not work on materials containing asbestos.

How do I clean the sander?

These operating instructions are intended to make it easier for you to get familiar with your device and utilize its intended possibilities of use.

The operating instructions contain important notes on how to work safely, properly and economically with your machine and how to avoid dangers, save repair costs, reduce downtime, and increase the reliability and working life of the machine.

4. Intended use

The power tool is intended for dry sanding of wood, plastic, metal, filler and varnished surfaces.

The equipment is to be used only for its prescribed purpose. Any other use is deemed to be a case of misuse. The user / operator and not the manufacturer will be liable for any damage or injuries of any kind caused as a result of this.

To use the equipment properly you must also observe the safety information, the assembly instructions and the operating instructions to be found in this manual.

All persons who use and service the equipment have to be acquainted with this manual and must be informed about the equipment's potential hazards.

It is also imperative to observe the accident prevention regulations in force in your area.

The same applies for the general rules of health and safety at work.

The manufacturer will not be liable for any changes made to the equipment nor for any damage resulting from such changes.

The machine may be used only with original accessories and original tools of the manufacturer.

The safety-, workplace- and maintenance specifications of the manufacturer as well as the dimensions specified in the technical data must be observed.

Please note that our equipment has not been designed for use in commercial, trade or industrial applications. Our warranty will be voided if the equipment is used in commercial, trade or industrial businesses or for equivalent purposes.

5. Safety information

WARNING

Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and technical data provided with this power tool.

Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

The term "electrical tool" used in the safety advice refers to electrical tools powered by mains electricity (by means of a mains lead) and electrical tools powered by rechargeable batteries (without a mains lead).

1) Work area safety
a) Keep your working area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of the tool allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

4) Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools clean and sharp. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

5) Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Safety instructions for belt sanders and drum sanders

Hold the electric tool by the insulated gripping surfaces, as the sanding surface can hit its own connection cable. Damage to a live power line can electrify metal device parts and lead to an electric shock.

• Warning! Noxious fumes! Any harmful / noxious dusts generated from sanding represent a risk to the health of the person operating the device and to anyone near the work area.
• Warning! Dust hazard! When sanding wood and in particular when working on materials that give rise to dusts that are hazardous to health, the sander must be connected to a suitable external dust extraction device. Wear protective glasses and a dust mask!

• Ensure that there is adequate ventilation when working on plastic, paint, varnish etc.

• Do not soak the materials or the surface you are about to work on with liquids containing solvents.

• Do not abrade moistened materials or damp surfaces.
• Avoid sanding paints containing lead or other substances hazardous to health.
• Do not work on materials containing asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen.
• Avoid contact with the moving sanding sheet.
• Operate the device only with an attached sanding sheet.
• Never use the device for a purpose for which it was not intended nor with non-original parts / accessories. The use of tools or accessories other than those recommended in the operating instructions could lead to you suffering an injury.
  Always keep the device clean, dry and free of oil or grease.
• Only use the power tool for dry sanding. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
• Ensure that no persons are at risk due to flying sparks. Remove combustible materials from the surrounding area. Flying sparks are created when sanding metals.
• Warning: Danger of fire! Avoid overheating the workpiece and the sander. Always empty the dust collector before taking a break from work. Sanding dust in the dust bag, microfilter, paper bag (or in the filter bag or vacuum cleaner filter) can spontaneously combust under certain conditions, for example if flying sparks are created when sand ing metals. This risk is increased if the sanding dust is mixed with paint or polyurethane residue or with other chemical substances and if the workpiece is hot as a result of prolonged work.
• Clean the air vents on your power tool regularly. The motor's fan will draw the dust inside the housing and excessive accumulation of powdered metal may cause electrical hazards.
• Hold the power tool firmly with both hands and make sure you have a stable footing. The power tool can be more securely guided with both hands.
• Always wait until the power tool has come to a complete stop before placing it down.
• Secure the workpiece. A workpiece clamped with clamping devices or in a vice is held more secure than by hand.
• In case of damage and improper use of the battery, vapours may be emitted. Ensure the area is well-ventilated and seek medical attention should you experience any adverse effects. The vapours may irritate the respiratory system.

• Do not open the battery. There is a risk of short-circuiting.

• The battery can be damaged by pointed objects such as nails or screwdrivers or by force applied externally. An internal short circuit may occur, causing the battery to burn, smoke, explode or overheat.

• Only use the battery with products from the manufacturer. This is the only way in which you can protect the battery against dangerous overload.
• Protect the battery against heat, e.g. against continuous intense sunlight, fire, water, and moisture. There is a risk of explosion.

• Furthermore, despite all precautions having been met, some non-obvious residual risks may still remain.
• Residual risks can be minimised if the "safety instructions" and the "Proper use" are observed along with the whole of the operating instructions.
• Avoid accidental starting of the machine.
• Use the tool that is recommended in this manual.. This ensures that your machine performs optimally.
• Hands may never enter the processing zone when the machine is in operation.

7. Unpacking

• Open the packaging and remove the device carefully.
• Remove the packaging material as well as the packaging and transport bracing (if available).
• Check that the delivery is complete.
• Check the device and accessory parts for transport damage. Inform the transport agent immediately of any faults. Later complaints cannot be considered.
• If possible, store the packaging until the warranty period has expired.
• Familiarize yourself with the machine with the help of the operating instructions manual before using it.
• Use only original parts for accessories as well as consumables and spare parts. Spare parts can be obtained from your retailer.
• Please quote our article numbers as well as type and production year in all your orders.

ATTENTION

The device and packaging materials are not toys! Children must not be allowed to play with plastic bags, film and small parts! There is a risk of swallowing and suffocation!

8. Installation

IMPORTANT!

You must fully assemble the appliance before using it for the first time!

To ensure that the Li battery pack provides long service you should take care to recharge it promptly. You must recharge the battery pack when you notice that the power of the cordless equipment drops.

Caution! Make sure that the device is switched off before you connect it to the mains supply.

Note! Always switch on the delta sander before bringing it into contact with the workpiece material.

Switching on the device:

Slide rechargeable battery (not included in the delivery) onto the device.

The ON switch (1) is located on the left side of the device. To switch on the device, press the ON switch (1).

Switching off the device:

The OFF switch (5) is located on the right side of the device. To switch off the device, press the OFF switch (5).

Vacuum dust extraction

Warning! Danger of fire! There is the danger of fire when working with electrical devices that have a dust box or can be connected to a vacuum cleaner. Under certain conditions the wood dust in the dust extraction bag (or in the vacuum's dust bag) may ignite, e.g. as a result of flying sparks generated when abrading metals or metal objects left in wood.

This can happen particularly if the wood dust is mixed with paint residue or other chemicals and the abraded particles are hot from prolonged abrasion. Therefore you must empty the device's dust collection box and the vacuum cleaner's dust bag before taking a break or stopping work and always avoid overheating of the abraded particles and the device.

Dust bag (Fig. 1)

Connection:

Slide the tube on the dust bag (2) onto the suction port (6).

Removal:

Draw the dust bag (2) off the suction port (6).

Alternatively, it is also possible to fasten a suction hose onto the suction port instead of the dust bag.

Note: To guarantee optimum suction, empty and knock out the dust bag (2) in a timely manner.

Attaching / detaching sanding sheets (Fig. 2)

Warning! Remove the rechargeable battery before carrying out work on the device.

Attaching:

• Sanding sheets are attached to the backing plate (3) by means of the hook and pile fastening.

Detaching:

Simply pull the sanding sheet off the backing plate (3) (see Fig. 2).

Sanding and surfaces:

The sanding output and the quality of the surface finish are determined by the grade of grit on the sanding sheet.

Always use sanding sheets with grades that are suitable for the particular surface you are sanding.

9. Cleaning

Danger!

Always pull out the battery pack before starting any cleaning work.

Cleaning

• Keep all safety devices, air vents and the motor housing free of dirt and dust as far as possible. Wipe the equipment with a clean cloth or blow it with compressed air at low pressure.
• We recommend that you clean the device immediately each time you have finished using it.
• Clean the equipment regularly with a moist cloth and some soft soap. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents; these could attack the plastic parts of the equipment. Ensure that no water can seep into the device. The ingress of water into an electric tool increases the risk of an electric shock.

10. Storage

Store the device and its accessories in a dark, dry and frost-proof place that is inaccessible to children. The optimum storage temperature is between 5 and 30^ . Store the electrical tool in its original packaging. Cover the electrical tool in order to protect it from dust and moisture. Store the operating manual with the electrical tool.

11. Maintenance

There are no parts inside the equipment which require additional maintenance.

12. Disposal and recycling

The equipment is supplied in packaging to prevent it from being damaged in transit. The raw materials in this packaging can be reused or recycled. The equipment and its accessories are made of various types of material, such as metal and plastic. Defective components must be disposed of as special waste. Ask your dealer or your local council.

Old devices must not be disposed of with household waste!
