Frequently Asked Questions - CG30040725 Char-Griller

What are the risks of carbon monoxide with this barbecue?
The barbecue produces carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless and deadly gas. Always use the barbecue outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from windows, doors, and air intakes. Never use it in a garage, tent, house, or vehicle. Symptoms of poisoning (headache, dizziness, nausea) may be mistaken for a cold.
How to safely light the barbecue?
Never use gasoline, alcohol, or lighter fluid. Use a charcoal chimney or firelighters compliant with EN 1860-3. Place the firelighter under the chimney or in the middle of the charcoal pile. Do not exceed 1 kg of charcoal. Wait until the coals are covered with ash before cooking.
Do I need to prepare the barbecue before first use?
Yes, you need to season the barbecue. Build a medium fire with 1 kg of charcoal, close the lid and heat to 121 °C (250 °F) for 2 hours. This burns off manufacturing residues. After cooling, brush the grate.
How to control the cooking temperature?
The temperature is regulated by the air dampers: more air = more heat, less air = less heat. The amount of charcoal also affects it: more charcoal = more heat. For smoking, open dampers a quarter; for searing, open fully. Never exceed 204 °C (400 °F).
What safety distances should be observed?
Place the barbecue at least 3 m (10 ft) from any elevated structure, wall, railing, combustible material (wood, plants, paper, gasoline). Do not use under an awning or cover. The ground must be stable and non-combustible (concrete, stone).
Can this barbecue be used in windy weather?
No, it is not recommended to use the barbecue in strong wind. Wind can fan the flames, cause burns, or damage the appliance. Choose a sheltered location.
How to clean and maintain the barbecue?
Wait until the appliance is completely cold. Empty ashes into a metal container and wet them. Clean grates with a soft bristle brush and soapy water. Do not use oven cleaner. Brush the ceramic interior with a soft brush. For rust, sand and apply heat-resistant paint on the exterior only.
How to extinguish the barbecue after use?
Let the temperature drop below 177 °C (350 °F), then close all dampers and the lid. The lack of air will smother the coals. Let cool completely (below 45 °C) before moving or storing the appliance. Never store the barbecue with hot ashes or charcoal.
What if parts are missing or damaged?
Do not return the appliance to the store. Contact Char-Griller customer service (contact details in the manual). For Australia and New Zealand, contact your retailer. Keep proof of purchase for any warranty claims.
What is the warranty for the Char-Griller CG30040725 barbecue?
The lid and body are warranted for 5 years against rust-through or burn-through. The ash pan and other parts are warranted for 1 year. Surface rust, paint, heat damage, or misuse are not covered. Proof of purchase is required.

Operating Instructions

SETTING UP

Set grill up on solid, flat surface with adequate wind shelter.

Do not move grill while hot, and do not leave unattended during operation.

This appliance is designed for use outdoors, away from any flammable materials. It is important that there are no overhead obstructions and that there is a minimum distance of 3 m (10 feet) from the side or rear of the appliance. It is important that the ventilation openings of the appliance are not obstructed. The barbecue must be used on a level, stable surface. The appliance should be protected from direct drafts and positioned or protected against direct penetration by any trickling water (e.g. rain).

PRE-SEASONING

IMPORTANT! Pre-Seasoning will rid your grill of chemicals and oils left over by the manufacturing process, allowing them to burn off. PRE-SEASON GRILL PRIOR TO FIRST USE.

  1. Start grill by following the LIGHTING instructions. Build a medium sized fire.

  2. Do not use more than 1 KGS / 2 LBS of charcoal.
    • Always put charcoal on charcoal tray.

  3. Never put charcoal directly into the bottom of the grill.

  4. After coals ash over, spread out coals, replace cooking grates, close lid and heat to 121^ C ( 250^ F) for two hours. This process will burn off any unwanted residue from the inside of your grill. Before cooking again, brush the cooking grate with a standard grill brush. Use a soft bristle brush on the ceramics to remove any residue.

Once or twice a year, you should do a more thorough cleaning of the inside of the grill. Remove the internal components and remove any residual ash or debris that has collected between the grill body and the internal components. Use a plastic bristle brush to clean the inside ceramic surface and scoop or vacuum debris from the bottom of the grill before replacing the internal components.

NOTE: NEVER EXCEED A COOKING TEMPERATURE OF 204°C (400°F) BECAUSE THIS WILL DAMAGE THE FINISH AND CONTRIBUTE TO RUST. PAINT IS NOT WARRANTED AND WILL REQUIRE TOUCH-UP. THIS UNIT IS NOT WARRANTED AGAINST RUST.

LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS

There are a few different methods that can be used to light the charcoal in your charcoal grill depending on personal preference. Below the charcoal chimney and fire starter methods are described.

DO NOT EXCEED A TOTAL OF 1 KGS / 2 LBS OF CHARCOAL FOR MAIN FIREBOX

CHARCOAL CHIMNEY

  1. Remove the grill grates and set them to the side.
  2. Fill the charcoal chimney 34 of the way full with briquettes or lump charcoal
  3. Set a fire starter on charcoal grate, light and then place the charcoal chimney directly on top of the fire starter. This step is done INSIDE the grill.
  4. Coals will fire upward from bottom to top.
  5. USE EXTREME CAUTION! After the coals on the top of the chimney are ignited (usually 10-15 minutes) pour the coals onto the charcoal grate, spread coals out with tongs, and replace your grill grates.

NOTE:

  • Always follow the charcoal manufacturer's instructions and warnings.
  • Do not use lighter fluid, gasoline, kerosene, alcohol or other accelerant for lighting charcoal.
  • If necessary, USE EXTREME CAUTION and use tongs or a long handled tool to move coals.
    • Always wear heat resistant gloves when handling grill grates, charcoal grate, or adjusting coals.

MAINTAINING TEMPERATURE

In order to control the temperature of your grill, you need to control the amount of air flow to the fire. By opening and closing the top and side dampers, you can adjust the temperature of your grill.

  • MORE AIR = MORE HEAT
  • LESS AIR = LESS HEAT

The amount of charcoal used when grilling can also greatly impact your ability to control temperature. The more charcoal that ignites, the hotter the grill can be.

  • MORE CHARCOAL = MORE HEAT
  • LESS CHARCOAL = LESS HEAT

Cooking Styles

OVERVIEW

Your charcoal grill can be used to smoke, grill or sear your food with direct or indirect heat.

By creating temperature zones and adjusting the charcoal placement, you can customize your culinary experience as desired. We have listed a few different cooking styles that you can utilize.

TRADITIONAL SMOKE

NOTE: charcoal placement is key for this method.

  1. Cook with indirect heat at low temperatures (65°-121°C) (150°-250°F).
  2. Use split wood logs, chips, chunks, or pellets to add smoke flavor.
  3. Prepare the charcoal or fuel in the main cook chamber. Only utilize 1/2 or 1/3 of the charcoal grate.

- Never put charcoal directly into the bottom of the grill.

  1. Create 2 "zones" with the placement of the fuel.
  2. Food should be placed in the cool zone / the area not directly above the fuel.
  3. Hang the charcoal grate in its lowest setting / farthest from the cooking grates.

Food Water Pan (optional) Charcoal / Fuel

GRILLING (direct or indirect heat)

Note: Placement of the food above or next to the charcoal zone will create the direct or indirect heat

  1. Cook with direct or indirect heat at medium to high temperatures (149°C +) (300°F +).
  2. Use split wood logs, chips, chunks, or pellets to add smoke flavor.
  3. Prepare the charcoal or fuel in the main cook chamber. Only utilize 1/2 of the charcoal grate.
  4. Never put charcoal directly into the bottom of the grill.

  5. Create 2 "zones" with the placement of the fuel.

  6. Food can be placed in the "indirect" zone for lower temperatures. The indirect zone is the area not directly above the fuel.

  7. Food can be placed in the "direct" zone for higher temperatures. The direct zone is the area directly above the fuel.

  8. Hang the charcoal grate in the medium setting from the cooking grates.

Food (indirect heat) Food (direct heat) Charcoal / Fuel

SEAR (direct heat)

Note: This style is best for short cooks. Use caution, cooking at high temperatures like this can dry out the food.

  1. Quickly cook with direct heat at high temperatures (204°C) (400°F).
  2. Smoke flavor will not be added at this temperature. The wood will burn too hot to infuse flavor.
  3. Prepare the charcoal or fuel in the main cook chamber.
  4. Never put charcoal directly into the bottom of the grill.
  5. Food can be is in the "direct" zone for searing temperatures. The direct zone is the area directly above the fuel.
  6. Hang the charcoal grate in the highest setting / closest to the cooking grates.
  7. Food will cook very quickly at this temperature. Use caution.
  8. Always cook with the lid open when using this method to prevent damage to the exterior of the grill.

Operating Instructions

RELOAD

If planning to cook for more that 30 to 40 minutes, additional charcoal should be added. Once briquettes become 80% ashed over, remove the center charcoal grate and add additional charcoal (10 to 20 briquettes). Read all instructions and warnings on the charcoal bag.

NOTE: To avoid ignition smoke use a charcoal chimney to pre start your briquettes.

SHUT DOWN

Allow the temperature to drop to below 177^ C ( 350^ F). Once the temperature is below 177^ C ( 350^ F) close all lids and dampers. This will help extinguish the charcoal. Allow time for the grill to cool completely before moving on to the cleaning and care section.

GRATE LIFTER

Use your grate lifter to handle your cooking grates.

CAUTION! Cooking grates can be HOT! Use the grill gripper to re-position the cooking grates throughout your cook.

Cleaning and Care

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

In order to keep your grill in the best shape regular cleaning and maintenance is required. The best way to protect your grill from the elements is with a grill cover.

  • ALWAYS MAKE SURE UNIT IS COOL TO THE TOUCH BEFORE CLEANING AND STORING.
  • Inspect hardware and assembled parts on a regular basis to ensure grill is in safe working condition.
  • Always empty the ash tray after each use once ashes have completely cooled. Empty the ashes into a metal container and cover with water to ensure there are no lit coals.
  • Clean grill and cooking grids with mild cleaning agents. Wipe outside of grill with a damp rag. DO NOT use oven cleaner.
    • Always cover and store cold grill in a protected area.
  • Indoor storage of grill is permissible only if the charcoal has burned to a complete ash and is cold.
  • Remember to remove cold ashes before storing.
  • Your grill is made of steel and some rust may appear over time. If rust occurs clean the area with fine sandpaper or steel wool, then cover with heat resistant paint.
    • NEVER USE PAINT ON INSIDE SURFACES OF GRILL.
  • Frequent seasoning prevents rusting. If rusting occurs, clean with a steel brush, apply cooking oil or vegetable shortening and heat as indicated in the pre-seasoning steps.
