Frequently Asked Questions - U357025SEC Tripp Lite

What types of hard drives can I install in the U357-025-SEC enclosure?
You can install a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive (HDD) or a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, with a maximum height of 9.5 mm. The enclosure is compatible with SATA I (1.5 Gbps), SATA II (3 Gbps), and SATA III (6 Gbps) interfaces.
How do I set up the password for the first time?
1. Insert the drive into the enclosure and close it. 2. Press and hold the '1' and '3' buttons on the keypad for 20 seconds while connecting the USB cable to the computer. The red and green LEDs stay on. 3. Press '*' for 5 seconds until the orange LED turns on. 4. Enter a 4-6 digit password, then press '#'. 5. Re-enter the password to confirm. If the green and blue LEDs turn on, the setup is successful.
How do I change the password?
1. Press and hold the '*' button while connecting the USB cable. The red, green, and orange LEDs turn on. 2. Enter the old password and press '#'. The red and green LEDs remain on. 3. Enter the new password and press '#' (blue LED blinks). 4. Re-enter the new password and press '#' to confirm. The red and green LEDs turn on to indicate success.
What should I do if I forget my password?
If you forget your password, the data is permanently lost. The enclosure does not have a reset function. It is highly recommended to regularly back up your data to another storage device to prevent loss.
Is the enclosure compatible with USB 2.0?
Yes, it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. However, transfer speeds will be limited to the port used (up to 480 Mbps on USB 2.0). For maximum performance, use a USB 3.0 port.
Why does my drive not appear on the computer after installation?
Make sure the password has been entered correctly and the enclosure is unlocked (blue LED on). If the drive is new or unformatted, it must first be initialized and formatted using your operating system's disk management tool.
Does the enclosure require an external power supply?
No, the enclosure is powered directly from the computer's USB port. No external power supply is needed.
What LED indicators show the enclosure status?
Red LED solid: enclosure locked (password required). Green LED blinking: data transfer in progress. Orange LED solid: password configuration mode. Blue LED solid: enclosure unlocked and ready for use.
Can I use the enclosure with a gaming console or TV?
Yes, as long as the host device has a USB port and supports mass storage devices. However, the password lock feature requires interaction with the enclosure's keypad, which may not be convenient depending on the device.
What is the product warranty?
Tripp Lite offers a one (1) year limited warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in materials and workmanship. For claims, contact Tripp Lite support to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number.

Installation

Notes:

  • Once the password is set and data is encrypted, losing the password or hardware failure will result in lost data. Removing the drive and placing it in another enclosure will not allow access to the data. It is recommended that all data stored on the enclosure be backed up to another location regularly to prevent data loss.
  • HDD/SSD drives are sensitive to static electricity and must be handled properly to avoid the risk of data loss. Always handle your HDD/SSD drive with caution by wearing an anti-static strap (such as Tripp Lite P999-000) or touching a grounded metal surface to discharge yourself of static electricity prior to picking up the drive.

  • Slide off the enclosure cover to reveal the drive tray.

  • Slide a 2.5" SATA drive into the drive tray. Align the SATA plug on the drive to the SATA connector in the drive tray.
  • Slide the enclosure cover back on the unit. Flip the unit over so its keypad faces upward.
  • Press and hold the "1" and "3" buttons on the keypad for 20 seconds. At the same time, connect the included USB cable between the USB port on the unit and a USB port on the host computer. The green LED will blink for a moment, then the red and green LEDs will illuminate solid to indicate the unit is ready to be assigned a password.

Installation

  1. To assign a password, press and hold the * button for 5 seconds or until the orange LED illuminates. Enter your 4 to 6-digit custom password, then hit the # button to enter.
  2. Once the custom password is entered, the orange LED will shut off, though the password must be reentered for confirmation. If your password is successfully confirmed, the green and blue LEDs will illuminate. If your password confirmation is unsuccessful, the red and green LEDs will illuminate to indicate the passwords do not match.
  3. After your password is successfully confirmed, the host computer will immediately identify the hard drive connected to the keypad.
  4. If the SATA drive has not been formatted, you will first need to format it using your computer's Disk Management Utility in order to copy and access files.
  5. Your enclosure is now ready to read and write data. The green LED will blink to indicate data is being transferred.

Modifying Your Password

To change your password, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the button. At the same time, connect the included USB cable between the USB port on the unit and a USB port on the host computer. After approximately 5 seconds, the red, green and orange LEDs will illuminate.
  2. Enter the old password and press the “#” button to enter. Only the red and green LEDs will illuminate.
  3. Enter the new password and press the “#” button to save. The blue LED will blink while the red and green LEDs remain illuminated.
  4. Reenter the new password and press the "#" button to confirm the password change was successful. The blue LED will blink. The red and green LEDs will then illuminate to indicate a successful password change.
