What is the Palmer Wipper direct box?

The Palmer Wipper is a passive direct box designed to convert an unbalanced audio signal into a balanced one. It allows connecting instruments (electric guitar, bass, keyboard) or the speaker output of an amplifier to a mixer or audio interface, while eliminating hum over long distances.

How do I connect my guitar to the mixer via the Wipper?

Plug your guitar into the INPUT A (6.35 mm TS) using a shielded instrument cable. Connect the OUTPUT (XLR male) to a balanced input on the mixer with a shielded XLR cable. Make sure the channel is muted when connecting.

What is the PAD switch for?

The PAD switch attenuates the input signal by 30 dB. Use it if the mixer or audio interface input is overloaded (distortion). When pressed, the attenuation is active.

How do I use the Ground Lift function?

The LIFT/GND switch disconnects the ground connection between input and output to eliminate ground loops. When not pressed (LIFT), the ground is lifted; when pressed (GND), the connection is maintained. Test both positions to reduce hum.

Can I connect two sources simultaneously?

Yes, by pressing the INPUT B switch (No. 3), the THRU/INPUT B jack becomes a second input. The signals from inputs A and B are then summed to mono on the OUTPUT. Ideal for connecting a stereo keyboard in mono.

What is the maximum power rating on the speaker input?

If you connect the speaker output of an amplifier to the INPUT A, the power must not exceed 120 W at 8 ohms. Do not use an amplifier in bridge mode with the direct box.

How do I use the THRU output?

The THRU output (6.35 mm TS) provides the input signal unchanged. It can be used to connect a guitar amplifier or another direct box in parallel. When the INPUT B switch is pressed, this jack becomes an additional input.

What cables should I use with the Wipper?

Use shielded instrument cables for the TS inputs (guitar, keyboard) and balanced XLR cables for the output to the mixer. For the speaker output, use a suitable speaker cable. Avoid unshielded cables.

Does the direct box require power?

No, the Palmer Wipper is a passive model, it requires no external power or battery. The internal transformer works without electricity, making it very reliable.

How do I clean and maintain the Wipper?

Clean the housing with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners. Avoid moisture and extreme temperatures. Store it in a dry, dust-free place. Never open it.

INTRODUCTION

The DI box wipper is a professional studio and stage tool that transforms an unbalanced audio signal into a balanced audio signal. The internal transformer offers excellent dynamic range and excellent overload stability. The DI box is used as a link to connect string instruments with pickups such as electric acoustic guitars, electric guitars and electric basses, instruments with line outputs such as keyboards, as well as speaker outputs from guitar amplifiers to balanced mixer inputs or audio interfaces. With the DI box, audio signals can also be transmitted over long cable runs without humming.

CONNECTIONS AND OPERATING ELEMENTS

1. INPUT A

Audio input with 6.3 mm jack socket.

A. Connect an instrument using a shielded instrument cable.

B. Connect the speaker output of a guitar amplifier using a speaker cable (tip: Press PAD switch no. 5).

WARNING: Amplifiers must not be operated in bridge mode on the DI box.

WARNING: If an amplifier is operated on the DI box, the ground connection between t and output must be disconnected (switch no. 6 in the non-pressed LIFT position).

WARNING: The amplifier output of a connected amplifier must not exceed 120 W at 8 ohms!

ATTENTION: When using a tube amplifier: There is no load resistance in the DI box circuit! In order to avoid damage to the amplifier, a suitable guitar speaker or a suitable load resistor must be connected to the THRU jack socket using a speaker cable before switching on the plifier, and switch no. 3 must be in the unpressed LINK OUT position!

2. THRU/INPUT B

THRU: The input signal (INPUT A no. 1) is output unchanged via the 6.3 mm jack socket (switch no. 3 in non-pressed position).

INPUT B: In addition to INPUT A, the 6.3 mm jack socket can be used as a second line input (e.g. keyboard L + R); the signals from INPUT A and INPUT B are mono summed and output at the line output OUTPUT (no. 4) (switch no. 3 in pressed position).

3. SWITCH THRU/INPUT B

Switch not pressed (THRU): The input signal (INPUT no. 1) is output unchanged via the 6.3 mm THRU/INPUT B jack socket.

Switch pressed (INPUT B): In addition to INPUT A (no. 1), the 6.3 mm THRU/INPUT B jack socket can be used as a second line input.

4. OUTPUT

Balanced audio output with a male 3-pin XLR socket. Use a balanced, shielded cable (e.g. microphone cable) to connect the DI box to a balanced input on a mixer or audio interface.

5. PAD (Passive Attenuation Device)

Move the switch to the pressed position to lower the level of the output signal level by 30 dB. Lowering the output level is necessary if the channel input level of the connected mixer or audio interface is distorted.

6. LIFT/GND

Switch for disconnecting the ground connection from the input and output (ground lift). In the non-pressed position, the ground connection is disconnected; the connection is established when the switch is pressed. The ability to prevent a humming loop using the ground lift switch depends on the grounding of the connected device. It is therefore possible that both one and the other switch position is able to effectively reduce or eliminate humming.

ATTENTION: Connecting signal cables can cause a lot of noise. Make sure that the input channel (mixer, audio interface, etc.) and devices connected to the THRU output are muted when plugging in. Otherwise, noise levels may cause damage.

PLEASE NOTE: STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS CAN CAUSE HUMMING. THEREFORE, DO NOT POSITION THE DI BOX NEAR STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS (E.G. MAINS TRANSFORMER).
