text_image
Diagram illustrating a mechanical or fluidic process with labeled components and directional arrows, showing transformation from raw material to final state. The Focus Range Selector
Choose the focus range for autofocus: FULL (0.25 m–∞) or, for faster focus, 0.5 m–∞ or 0.25–0.5 m.
①At the minimum focus distance of 25 cm, the working distance (the distance between the subject and the front lens element) is 11 cm.

text_image
0.5-∞ FULL 0.25-0.5Optical Image Stabilization (O. I. S.)
To use optical image stabilization, slide the O. I. S. switch to ON.

① The high reproduction ratios used in macro photography amplify the effects of camera shake. Although the lens compensates for panning (vertical and side-to-side) motion and consequently does aid in reducing blur during macro photography, caution is required as image stabilization will be less effective than at longer focal lengths.
① The shallow field depths associated with macro photography increase the risk of out-of-focus shots should the distance to the subject change as the result of camera shake. When shooting at short working distances, we recommend that you focus using AF-C and hold the camera steady.
The Aperture Ring
Rotate the lens aperture ring to choose the aperture (f-number).

text_image
111628R64 23Aperture ring
Manual Exposure
The aperture indicated on the camera and lens is for a subject at infinity. While at non-macro ranges this has no effect on exposure, in macro photography the effective aperture slows as the distance to the subject drops. When setting exposure manually, add the following exposure factor to the value given by the exposure meter.
| Reproduction ratio | 1:5 | 1:3 | 1:2 | 1:1.5 | 1:1 |
| Focus distance (m) | 0.54 | 0.38 | 0.31 | 0.28 | 0.25 |
| Effective f-number | 3.1 | 3.2 | 3.4 | 3.6 | 4.0 |

① Improvements may result in unannounced changes to specifications and appearance.
① Owing to how this lens is constructed, the "Distance indicator" displayed by the camera may in some cases differ from the actual focus distance. Use the "Distance indicator" as a guide only.
This lens uses linear motors to ensure fast and accurate autofocus while maintaining the highest image quality. When the camera is turned off, the lens is disconnected from the camera body, or the playback feature is turned on, there may be an audible sound and slight physical vibration due to the linear motor's magnets being disengaged. This is perfectly normal and will not negatively affect image quality or lens performance.
