USER MANUAL UCM7 BLACK & DECKER

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:

Read all instructions.

To protect against electric shock, do not place cord, plug or appliance in water or other liquids.

Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.

Do not use outdoors.

The carafe is designed for use with the appliance. It must never be used on a range top.

Do not clean the carafe with abrasive cleansers, steel wool, or other abrasives material. ❑ Do not set a hot carafe down on a wet or cold surface. ❑ Do not use the carafe if the glass is cracked or has a loose or weakened handle

Do not use this appliance for other than intended use.

To disconnect, turn any control to off, then remove plug from wall outlet.

Scalding may occur if the lid is removed during the brewing cycles. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. POLARIZED PLUG (120V Models Only) This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way. TAMPER-RESISTANT SCREW

Warning : This appliance is equipped with a tamper-resistant screw to prevent

removal of the outer cover. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not attempt to remove the outer cover. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Repair should be done only by authorized service personnel. ELECTRICAL CORD a) A short power-supply cord (or detachable power-supply cord) is to be provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. b) Longer detachable power-supply cords or extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use. c) If a long detachable power-supply cord or extension cord is used,

1) The marked electrical rating of the detachable power-supply cord or extension

cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance,

2) If the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord should be a

grounding-type 3-wire cord, and

3) The longer cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the

countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over. 1. Remove all stickers, packing material, and literature.

2. Wash the carafe, carafe lid and brew basket in warm sudsy water—rinse

thoroughly. These parts are also top rack, dishwasher safe.

CLEANING BEFORE FIRST USE

Cycle the unit once with water to help remove any sediment.

3. Follow steps (6-8) in "Brewing Coffee" (Do not use

ground coffee or a paper filter).

4. When cycle is finished discard water from the carafe.

To set the current time of day:

1. Plug in the coffeemaker. The display indicates 12:00 a.m. until the time is set.

a. Press the HOUR button until you see the correct time. The left corner of the display indicates A.M./P.M. b. Press the MIN button to select the correct minutes. The clock is set and will continue to keep correct time. Note: Unplugging the unit will reset the clock to 12:00. BREWING COFFEE You do not have to set the clock or program the coffeemaker to brew coffee.

1. Open water reservoir lid.

2. Use the carafe to fill the water reservoir with cold water to the desired level.

3. Place filter inside paper filter basket and add coffee to be brewed (usually one

heaping tablespoon per every cup. Adjust to taste). Replace filter basket. Make sure brew basket is locked in place.

4. Replace empty carafe and be sure it is "seated" in unit.

5. Plug in the coffeemaker.

6. Press ON/OFF button. "On" appears at upper right. (To set timer for AUTO ON,

see Setting the Clock/Timer.)

7. If you are brewing less than 4 cups, fill the water tank to the 4-cup level and

press the ON/OFF button to begin brewing then press the 1-4 cup brew strength button. A steady light illuminates. The light remains on until the brewing process is completed and the coffeemaker is manually turned off or until it shuts off after 2 hours.

8. If you want a stronger brew for more than 4 cups, prepare filter and water level

for desired quantity and press the 1-4 cup brew strength button. Otherwise, if you are brewing more than 4 cups, press the ON/OFF button to begin brewing. The steady ON light illuminates.

Note: The coffeemaker shuts off automatically after 2 hours, or you may press the "ON/OFF" button to instantly turn off the coffeemaker. At any time prior to auto shutoff, pressing the button will reset the auto-off mode to 2 hours.

9. Replace the carafe on the "Keep Hot" plate when not serving to keep

You can pour a cup of coffee while coffee is brewing without leaking from the brew basket. After pouring coffee, replace the carafe beneath the brew basket to resume the brewing process. Important: To avoid possible overflow after removing the carafe, be sure to replace the carafe under the brew basket immediately. Programming the Coffeemaker for Auto Brew Be sure clock is set for the current time of day. See "SETTING THE CLOCK."

1. To preset the coffeemaker to begin brewing, first follow steps (1-5) in

brew time is reached. Be sure to watch for the P.M. indicator in the digital display. Press the PROG button, the clock displays the current time of day.

CLEANING YOUR COFFEEMAKER

This product contains no user serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel. Caution: The control panel is not waterproof. Do not overexpose the control panel to water. Water may cause permanent damage and make the coffeemaker inoperable.

1. Be sure the unit is unplugged and cooled.

2. Open water reservoir lid.

3. Remove the brew basket by lifting the basket straight up.

4. Discard the paper filter with the grounds.

5. Clean parts as follows:

  • Brew basket, carafe and lid are all top rack dishwasher safe; or they may be hand washed in warm, sudsy water.
  • Wipe the exterior and the "Keep Hot" plate with a soft damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads. Never immerse the coffeemaker in water.

TREAT CARAFE WITH CARE

A damaged carafe may result in possible burns from a hot liquid. To avoid breaking:

  • Do not allow all liquid to evaporate from the carafe while on the "Keep Hot" plate or heat the carafe when empty.
  • Discard the carafe if damaged in any manner. A chip or crack could result in breakage.
  • Never use abrasive scouring pads or cleansers, they will scratch and weaken the glass.
  • Do not place the carafe on or near a hot gas or electric burner, in a heated oven, or in a microwave oven.
  • Avoid rough handling and sharp blows.

MINERAL DEPOSITS AND CLOGGING

Mineral deposits left by hard water can clog your coffeemaker. Excessive steaming or a prolonged brewing cycle are signs that a cleaning is needed. Cleaning is recommended every 3 months.

1. Open water reservoir lid.

2. Pour white vinegar into the water reservoir up to the 4-cup level on the water

window. Add fresh water up to the 6-cup line, and close the reservoir lid.

3. Press brew basket release button to expose brew basket.

4. Put a new paper filter in the brew basket. Set the empty carafe on the

Turn the coffeemaker off and let it soak for at least 15 minutes to soften the deposits.
