SEVERIN MW 9284 - CAUTION - 1

HINT

Presents hints and other useful information.

Danger to certain categories of persons

There is an increased risk of injury for children and for people with reduced capabilities:

  • This appliance may be used by children (at least 8 years of age) and by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lacking experience and knowledge, provided they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance and fully understand all dangers and safety precautions involved.
Children must not be permitted to play with the appliance.
Children must not be permitted to carry out any cleaning or maintenance work on the appliance unless they are supervised.
  • Caution: Keep any packaging material well away from children - it is a potential source of danger, e.g. of suffocation.
  • Persons with sensitivity disorders, especially those with reduced sensitivity to differences in temperature, must definitely exercise increased caution when using the appliance.

Correct use

This microwave oven is intended for defrosting and heating food and beverages only. Any other use must be considered improper and may lead to personal injuries or material damage.

  • The appliance is intended for domestic or similar applications, eg in offices and similar locations. It is not suitable for commercial use, eg in commercial kitchens.
  • The appliance is not intended to be operated by means of an external timer or separate remote-control system.
  • The appliance is not intended to be used for drying purposes.
  • The unit must not be installed inside a cupboard.
  • WARNING: It is highly dangerous to heat up liquids or any kind of solid food items in closed containers in the unit, since there is a real danger of explosion.

  • Eggs in their shells or whole hard-boiled eggs must not be heated up in a microwave oven, since they may explode even after the microwave heating process has finished.

Electricity

The device is powered by electricity, and so there is always a risk of electric shock. The following precautions are therefore to be taken:

  • This appliance must only be connected to an earthed safety socket installed in accordance with the regulations. Do not use extension cords or multiple socket strips.
  • The appliance must only be connected to the mains if the voltage marked on the rating label corresponds to the supply voltage.
  • Do not kink or pinch the power cord. Keep both the cord and the appliance itself well away from heat sources (eg hot-plates, gas flames).
  • When removing the plug from the wall socket, never pull on the power cord; always grip the plug itself. Do not carry the unit by its power cord.

  • Do not immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid, do not clean it under running water and do not put it in a dishwasher.

  • Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
  • Do not operate the unit outdoors.
  • In the case of an emergency or malfunction, disconnect the appliance from the mains immediately. Ensure, therefore, that the plug the appliance is connected to is accessible and can be removed from the wall socket at any time.
  • Always remove the plug from the wall socket before any cleaning or maintenance work is carried out, or before assembling or disassembling the appliance.
  • Do not attempt to open or dismantle the unit, and do not attempt to make any technical modification.
  • As long as it is connected to the mains, a current is present inside the unit, even if it is switched off. The unit is disconnected from the mains only once the plug has been removed from the wall socket.

  • Always remove the plug from the wall socket after use.

Danger of burns and scalding

  • Use extreme caution when removing liquids from the oven after microwaving them: they may have heated up beyond boiling-point without visible evidence of bubbling.
  • The contents of baby bottles or glass containers with baby food must be thoroughly stirred or shaken to ensure that the temperature is evenly distributed. To avoid painful and dangerous scalding, always check the temperature before feeding a child.

Fire hazard

  • Do not switch the unit on unless food has been placed inside the oven.
  • Do not operate the appliance without the roller ring and turntable properly fitted.
  • Do not leave the appliance unattended while in use.
  • Do not use the appliance to dry food or clothing. There is a danger of such items catching fire.
  • Do not use the appliance to heat up warming pads, house slippers, sponges or wet cleaning cloths etc., as this may cause injury, combustion or fire.
  • Do not use the appliance to heat up pillows or pads filled with grain, cherry stones or gel.
  • Use only kitchenware suitable for use with microwave ovens, 'Selecting suitable kitchen utensils', page 27. Do not use any utensils with metal decoration such as gold rims etc. Do not use any metal containers when heating up food or beverages using the microwave function.

  • Should any smoke be noticed during operation, switch the unit off immediately.

Danger from microwave radiation

Microwave radiation poses a risk of burns.

  • Do not remove the protective cover (silver plate on the right interior compartment wall) in front of the microwave outlet inside the cooking compartment.
  • Do not operate the oven with the door open.

Lack of hygiene

If the cooking appliance is not kept properly clean, there may be deterioration of the surfaces, subsequently affecting service life and leading to potentially dangerous situations.

Lack of hygiene may result in germs forming inside the appliance.

  • Clean the appliance at regular intervals.
  • Remove any food residues after use.
  • Do not store any food items inside the oven.

There is also a health risk if unsuitable cleaning agents are used:

  • Only cleaning agents and utensils specified in this manual should be used for cleaning the appliance.
  • Do not use any steam cleaning appliances for cleaning.

Danger of damage to the unit

Incorrect handling of the appliance can cause damage:

Always place the unit on a dry, level, non-slip and heat-resistant surface.
- Before the appliance is stored away, remove the plug from the socket and allow the unit to cool down completely.
- To prevent the appliance from overheating, ensure that the ventilation slots are not obstructed in any way.

In case of a defective appliance

A defective appliance can cause material damage

and injury:

  • WARNING: Do not use the cooking appliance, if the door or its seals show any sign of damage, but have it repaired by qualified personnel.
  • Check the device for damage prior to every use. In the event that you detect damage due to transport, immediately contact the dealer where you have purchased the device.
  • Never operate a defective device. Never operate a device that has fallen down.
  • If the power cord of the unit shows any sign of damage, it must be replaced by the manufacturers or by Customer Service, or similarly qualified personnel to avoid any danger.
  • Any maintenance or repair work requiring the removal of any microwave radiation protection cover represents a serious hazard to unqualified persons. The unit must not be opened, except by qualified personnel.

  • The unit does not contain any components that can be serviced or repaired at home. Repairs must only carried out by SEVERIN Service (see 'Customer Service Centres', page 212).

Safety class I

General information on microwave ovens (Group II, Class B in compliance with EN 55011)

Electromagnetic energy is generated inside the unit, causing the molecules in the food (mainly water molecules) to oscillate and subsequently causing the food to become hot. Food with high water content will therefore heat up faster than relatively dry food. Any utensils, container or plates used are heated up only indirectly as a result of the food temperature.

This appliance is a group 2 class B ISM device. Group 2 contains all ISM devices (industrial, scientific, medical) generating radio frequency energy and/or using radio frequency energy in the form of electro-magnetic radiation to process materials; it also comprises spark erosion devices. Class B specifies devices designed for domestic use, or any similar devices integrated in the general power grid supplying domestic units.

4 Before using for the first time

  1. Remove any exterior and interior packaging materials and protective foil.
  2. Press the door opener to open the oven.
  3. Remove the grill rack, turntable and roller ring from the cooking compartment.
  4. Clean the unit, 'Cleaning and care', page 32.
  5. The appliance should be set up at a site which meets the following requirements:

  6. near an earthed safety socket (minimum fuse protection 10 A),

  7. positioned horizontally and protected from shock and vibration,
    heat-proof,
well away from any heated or inflammable surfaces and objects (>1m)
