3.2 Intended use
The Dräger Alcotest® 3820 ^1) alcohol meter is used to measure the alcohol concentration in human breath. The measurement is used to calculate the alcohol intoxication level of persons. It is not permitted for therapeutic measures to be initiated on the basis of the measurement.
4 Use

WARNING
Small parts of the instrument may become detached and be swallowed.
The instrument is not intended for children under 3 years.
4.1 Prerequisites for use
The instrument is factory-calibrated when delivered. If the calibration date is longer ago than 12 months, the instrument should be calibrated, e.g. by DragerService. Optional: if the calibration date has been exceeded, an error message is displayed after the startup screen.
After the last alcohol intake, wait approx. 15 minutes before a measurement is carried out. Alcohol residues that are still in the mouth may cause incorrect measuring values. This may also occur due to by aromatic drinks (e.g. fruit juices), alcoholic mouth sprays, medicines and drops, as well as by burping and vomiting. Rinsing the mouth with water or non-alcoholic drinks does not replace the wait time!
4.2 Carrying out a breath sample
A new mouthpiece must be inserted for each test subject.
i Do not allow any high alcohol concentrations on the sensor, e.g. by rinsing the mouth with a high proof alcohol shortly before the measurement, as this will shorten the service life of the sensor.
- Insert a new mouthpiece (order no. 83 25 250) in the mouthpiece receptacle (see page 2).
- Keep the button pressed for approx. 1 second until the startup screen is displayed.
- READY is displayed after approx. 4 seconds. The instrument is ready to use.
- Blow evenly and without interruptions into the mouthpiece. Do not cover the outlet opening on the mouthpiece with your hand. A continuous tone is sounded.
The test result is displayed after 3 to 25 seconds (depending on the instrument temperature and the measured concentration).
Carry out another measurement
- To prepare a new measurement, press the button briefly. During the recovery time of the sensor (see "Technical data" on page 20) is READY displayed.
4.3 Switching off the instrument
- Keep button pressed. The instrument will switch off after approx. 3 seconds.

The instrument will switch off automatically approx. 120 s after the last use.

Switching off the instrument does not reduce the waiting period until it is ready to take a measurement!
4.4 Removing the mouthpiece
- Pull the mouthpiece upwards out of the mouthpiece receptacle.
- Dispose of the mouthpiece in accordance with local regulations.
4.5 Settings
To display the menu:

| Fault / message Cause Remedy | ||
| Instrument cannot be switched on. | Battery drained. Contact DrägerService or dealer. | |
| Volume too low / sample invalid. | Test subject is blowing intermittently or not hard enough. | Blow more strongly and without interruptions into the mouthpiece. |
| Instrument outside temperature range | Instrument too hot or too cold. | Allow the instrument to cool down or become warmer. |
Fault / message Cause Remedy
| ↑↑↑ (Measuring range exceeded) | Measuring range exceeded. Alcohol residues that are still in the mouth may cause incorrect measuring values. | There must be an interval of at least 15 minutes after alcohol has been taken into the mouth (see page 16). To repeat, press the button. |
| Volume too small Breath sample volume too small. | Repeat breath sample. | |
| Volume too great Measuring range exceeded. | Repeat breath sample. | |
| Sample interruption Irregular outward breath, abrupt end or intake | Repeat breath sample. | |
| Fault number Instrument fault Switch the instrument off and on again. If the fault remains, contact DrägerService or dealer. | ||
6 Maintenance
Have the instrument calibrated as signs of drift increase the measurement uncertainty over time. Calibration and maintenance should only be carried out by authorised persons, e.g. DrägerService.
