USER MANUAL Kalahari Eurom

1. Read this instruction booklet carefully and fully before use.

2. Use the fireplace for its intended purpose only, i.e. the creation of an atmospheric and safe open fire in a

household setting either indoors or outside. Any other usage, not recommended by the manufacturer, may lead to fire or injury. The manufacturer, importer and supplier accept no liability for damage or injury that may be caused if the fireplace is misused or if these instructions are not followed thoroughly.

3. Before use, check your new fireplace for any visible damage. Never use a damaged fireplace but take it back

to the supplier for a replacement.

4. Before installation, make sure you are up-to-date with national and/or local regulations concerning the

installation and use of bio-ethanol fireplaces and ensure you comply with these.

5. Ensure that the fireplace is always properly and horizontally attached to a non-flammable, stable, flat, sturdy

and horizontal surface. Never use the fireplace if it is free-standing or leaning over!

6. Air around the fireplace must be able to circulate freely. Never install it too close to walls or large objects and

never under a shelf, cupboard or similar. Ensure there is free space of at least 50 cm above and to the sides of the fireplace and that there is 20 cm of space underneath. Do not install the fireplace directly opposite or immediately to the side of/above/below an electrical socket.

7. This fireplace is not suitable for use in wet or damp spaces such as bathrooms, wash rooms etc.

8. Open fire uses oxygen and gives out CO². Do not use the fireplace in spaces smaller than 25 m³ (Sahara) or

40 m³ (Kalahari) and ensure, during use, that there is sufficient ventilation (see ‘Using for the first time and Operation).

9. The fireplace gets hot during use. Ensure that the space in which the fireplace is installed contains no

explosive gasses (aerosols!), fuels such as petrol or flammable substances such as solvents, paint or glue.

10. Keep flammable materials such as furniture, curtains, bed linen, cushions, paper, clothing etc. at least 1

metre away from the fireplace.

11. In order to prevent injury, avoid touching the (hot) fireplace both during and immediately after use.

12. Contamination by water in the bio-ethanol or the use of the wrong fuel can lead to sparks being emitted. Be

aware of this when choosing the floor covering under the fireplace.

13. Never cover the fireplace! Never dry clothing on top (or in front) of the fireplace and do not place anything on

14. Never leave a burning fire unattended.

15. Ensure that there is sufficient supervision if children, incapacitated persons or persons with a sensory,

physical or mental disability are in the room in which a fireplace is installed. Keep them out of the immediate vicinity of the fireplace and do not allow them to operate or touch it. Ensure that pets cannot get close to the fireplace.

16. The Eurom Sahara/Kalahari can only be used with bio-ethanol. Never try to use other fuels (such as wood,

paper, turf, etc). in you fireplace (whether or not this is in combination with bio-ethanol). Never throw anything into the burning fire as this poses a fire risk!

17. Never touch a working fireplace, never fiddle around with it and never replenish the fuel when there is an

  • if it does not work properly
  • in good time before replenishing the fuel. Give the fireplace plenty of time to cool down, otherwise the fuel may spontaneously combust!
  • and allow it to cool down before you clean or perform maintenance on the fireplace.
  • and allow to cool down before moving the fireplace,
  • if you leave the room.

19. Keep the fireplace clean. Dust, fatty deposits and rust can burn or glow and either cause sparks or damage

the fireplace. Do not use metal scourers as they damage the steel and can cause sparks!13

20. Do not use the fireplace if it is not working properly/is damaged but have it checked and/or repaired by an

expert. The guarantee will be invalidated if repairs are carried out by someone without the relevant expertise! Parts used during repairs must be supplied by the manufacturer.

21. The fireplace has been designed to work properly; do not alter its construction or design. Such modifications

invalidate the guarantee and no liability will be taken by the supplier. Description SAHARA: 1 side panel (2x) 2 upper panel 3 lower panel 4 burner box 5 back plate 6 hanging hook(4x) 7 hook with handle

KALAHARI: 1 burner box (2x) 2 fire compartment 3 Upper and lower panel 4 Side panel (2x) 5 Hook with handle 6 Screw for burner box (2x2)

The hook with handle supplied with the fireplace is used to slide the lid on the (hot) burner box open and closed. Four screws (Ø 6mm x 60 mm) and plugs are supplied for attaching the fireplace to the wall and a template is provided to determine where the screw holes must be drilled. Construction, Installation and Connection

  • Remove the packaging and, before use, check that the fireplace is not damaged. If it is, refer back to the supplier.
  • Check, in advance, whether there are any national or local regulations governing the installation and use of bio- ethanol fireplaces and ensure you comply with these.
  • The fireplace must be hung on a sturdy, smooth wall that is not liable to vibrate and it must be made from non- flammable material (stone, concrete, etc). Check, in advance, whether the wall is sturdy enough to bear the fireplace; if not, take the necessary measures to strengthen the wall or seek an alternative location for the fireplace. The wall must be perfectly straight (so that the fireplace does not lean forwards or backwards), it may14 not be made of flammable materials such as wood, board, plaster or similar and must also not be covered with flammable material (wallpaper, textile, plaster or similar). A chimney is not required.
  • Determine where you would like to hang your fireplace. When doing so, take the surrounding area into account. The fireplace will become hot during use so ensure there is at least 50 cm distance between fireplace and side walls, cupboards, shelves etc. Keep at least 20 cm distance to the floor and ensure that no curtains, bed linen, paper goods, etc can come into contact with the fire; keep flammable materials at least one metre away! Do not install the fireplace directly opposite or immediately to the side of/above/below an electrical socket.
  • Use the template to determine the exact location of the drilling points for the four screws. The top two screw holes must be completely horizontal in relation to one another (use a spirit level!) Do the same thing with the lower screw holes. Now drill four holes in the wall using a 10 mm drill bit, tap in the plugs and then screw the screws into the plugs until 5 mm of the screw protrudes from the wall. SAHARA KALAHARI
  • Now hang the fireplace on the screws, using the hooks. When doing so, ensure that the stem of the screw sits in the narrow part of the hanging hook. Check that the fireplace is firmly attached.
  • Screw the screws (2 per burner box) securely into the attachment flaps on the sliding lid(s) of the burner box(es). The sliding lid can no longer be taken off the burner box (see diagram).
  • Place the burner box(es) in the recess(es) in the lower panel. Screw the burner box(es) into place in the lower panel with the screws provided.
  • The fireplace is now ready for use. Fuel The EUROM Sahara/Kalahari fireplace uses liquid (or gel) bio-ethanol. This is an environmentally-friendly, odourless, vegetable-based fuel with low CO² emissions. Good quality bio-ethanol combusts fully (leaves no ash) and provides a gentle flame without creating sparks or spluttering. Bio-ethanol is available from hardware stores and similar in a range of packaging. Other fuels are not permitted for use with this fireplace. Do not store large quantities of bio-ethanol and keep it out of the reach of children.15

Using for the first time and Operation

Filling and lighting Fill the burner box to the top of the dipstick (maximum) with bio- ethanol. The dipstick can be found in the burner box; the upper, horizontal level is the maximum level for the fuel. Be extremely careful when filling: use a funnel, do not smoke and be aware of your clothing, hair and so on and:

  • Ensure that the fireplace has completely cooled down whenever you are refilling with fuel.
  • Ensure that the burner box is in place properly when filling with fuel. Do not fill a burner box that is not in position and do not overfill.
  • Make sure you do not spill any fuel. If you accidentally spill fuel, clean the spilt fuel carefully with an absorbent cloth and ensure that all of the spillage has been cleaned up before lighting the fire. There should never be fire outside the burner opening! Check to ensure there is no flammable material within one metre of the fireplace (this includes clothing, hair etc!). and light the fuel with a long match or a long lighter. Fuel at room temperature will burn more smoothly than cold fuel but never relight the fire if it is still warm as this can lead to an unexpectedly fierce flame! It will take several minutes before the fire burns properly. Draughts will lead to an unsettled combustion process and accelerated burning so ensure the fire is located in a draught-free environment. Burner box The capacity of the burner box is about 450 ml and the fireplace can burn for over an hour with a full box Partially closing the sliding lid on the burner box will have a negative impact on the fire. It is not permitted. Always fully open the sliding lid when using the fire. Fully closing the sliding lid will extinguish the fire. Always open and close the sliding lid on the burner box with the hook and handle provided. The sliding lid gets hot during use so never touch it with bare hands! Irregular burning If the fireplace does not burn evenly, the flames are too high, flames appear outside the burner box or the fireplace malfunctions in any other way, immediately switch the appliance off and allow it to cool down. Try to find the cause (draught, wrong or contaminated fuel, spillage of fuel, damage to fireplace or burner box etc) and remove if possible. You can then relight the fire (taking all safety regulations into account). If you cannot find the cause and the problem persists, stop using the fireplace and send it for inspection/repair to the supplier or an appropriate expert. The fireplace is extinguished by fully closing the sliding lid. This prevents oxygen accessing the fire and the flames will be extinguished. If unexpected or dangerous situations occur (fire, flammable/explosive materials too near the fireplace, defects etc.) you must always close the sliding lid before taking any other measures. Ensure that the hook and handle is always located nearby the fireplace. Ventilation The bio-ethanol in your fireplace produces water and CO² during combustion in quantities that are not harmful (comparable to a few candles). Because of the fact that oxygen is removed from the air (as with an open fire), you must always ensure that there is sufficient ventilation during use. Take other oxygen-using items in the same room (candles, fondue sets, etc.) and the dimensions of the room into consideration when calculating the required ventilation; a small room needs more ventilation than a large one! Do not use the fireplace in a room that is too small; the room must be at least 25 m³ (Sahara) or 40 m³ (Kalahari). Always ensure there is a fire extinguisher available when using the fireplace. The Sahara/Kalahari fireplaces provide a cosy fire with a natural looking flame. The flames will give off a certain amount of heat but this cannot be compared to a real heater. You must regard your fireplace as a decorative, atmospheric item rather than a real source of heat.16

Cleaning and Maintenance

The Sahara/Kalahari fireplace does not require a great deal of maintenance. Keep the exterior clean by dusting regularly with a soft cloth. You may clean every now and then with a damp cloth, using a little, mild detergent. Do not use aggressive or abrasive products and/or materials as this will damage the steel! Over the course of time, there may be some build up of deposits or a little discolouration on the inside. Deposits can be removed with a degreasing agent but make sure you select a product that does not erode the materials! Evidence of use will appear on the back wall but this is part of the process and is unavoidable. The burner box can be removed every now and then and cleaned thoroughly in mild, soapy water. Dry properly before replacing. Always ensure that no moisture, residue from cleaning agents, fluff, brush hairs etc remain in the fireplace after cleaning. This may impact upon the combustion process. Pictograms The following pictograms are displayed on the fireplace.

These mean the following: 1 = Do not replenish fuel if the fire is on 2 = Do not replenish fuel while the fire is still warm 3 = This bio-ethanol fireplace is not suitable for continuous use 4 = The maximum permitted quantity of fuel in the burner box is 450 ml; this is to the top of the dipstick 5 = The distance between the fireplace and flammable construction material (side walls, adjoining cupboards, ceiling, overhanging shelves etc.) must be at least 50 cm. The distance to the floor must be at least 20 cm. 6 = Do not use the Sahara fireplace in rooms smaller than 25 m³, the Kalahari in rooms smaller than 40 m³. 7 = Only use this bio-ethanol fireplace in sufficiently ventilated areas.

Before installation or use, read this instruction booklet carefully and in full and comply with the regulations!17
