Danger! The electric power tool generates an electro- magnetic fi eld during operation. Under certain circumstances this fi eld may actively or passively impede medical implants. To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries, we recommend persons with medical implants to consult their doctor and the manufacturer of the medical implant prior to using the equipment.

5. Before starting the equipment

Before you connect the equipment to the mains supply make sure that the data on the rating plate are identical to the mains data. Warning! Always pull the power plug before making adjustments to the equipment. Connecting the welding cable (Fig. 4) Danger! Always make sure the machine is un- plugged before carrying out any connection work on the welding cable (8/9)! Connect the welding cable as shown in Fig. 4. To do so, connect the two connectors on the elec- trode holder (8) and the ground terminal (9) to the corresponding quick-lock couplings (5/6) and lock the connectors in place by turning them in a clockwise direction. The cable with the electrode holder (8) is normally connected to the positive pole (5) and the cable with the ground terminal (9) to the negative pole (6) for welding with coated rod electrodes. Switching ON/OFF (Fig. 2/3) Switch on the machine by moving the On/Off switch (11) to the “ON” position. The indicator lamp for operation (3) then comes on. Switch off the machine by moving the On/Off switch (11) to the “OFF” position. The indicator lamp for operati- on (3) then goes out. Caution! Before you switch on the machine, make sure that the selector switch for electrode/ TIG welding (12) is set to electrode welding. Welding preparations Connect the earth terminal (9) direct to the part to be welded or to the support on which the part is resting. Ensure that the earth terminal is in direct contact with the part to be welded. You should therefore avoid coated surfaces and/or insulation materials. The electrode holder cable has a special clamp at one end, which is used to secure the electrode. The welding safety shield must be used at all times for welding. It protects your eyes from the radiation emitted by the arc while still enabling you to watch the welding process (not included).

Welding After you have made all the electrical connections for the power supply and for the welding circuit, you can proceed as follows: Most coated electrodes are connected to the positive pole. However, some types of electrode have to be connected to the negative pole. Ensu- re that you observe the information supplied by the manufacturer in relation to the type of electro- de and correct polarity. Insert the unsheathed end of the electrode into the electrode holder (8) and connect the earth ter- minal (9) to the part you wish to weld. Ensure that a good electric contact is made. Switch on the machine at the On/Off switch (11) and use the potentiometer for setting the wel- ding current (1) to set the welding current which matches the electrode you want to use. Hold the safety shield in front of your face and rub the tip of the electrode on the part you wish to weld as if you were striking a match. This is the best method of igniting the arc. Check on a test part that you have the correct electrode and current strength. Electrode (Ø mm): Schweißstrom (A)

Caution! Do not dab the workpiece with the electrode since it could be damaged, making it more diffi cult to ignite the arc. As soon as the arc has ignited, try to keep it at a distance from the workpiece which is equal to the diameter of the electrode being used. This distance should be kept as constant as possible Anl_TC_IW_170_SPK1.indb 20Anl_TC_IW_170_SPK1.indb 20 10.01.2017 14:25:0410.01.2017 14:25:04GB

during the welding process. The angle of the electrode in the direction in which you are working should be 20/30°. Caution! Always use tongs to remove spent electrodes and to move parts that you have just welded. Please note that the electrode holder (8) must always be put down in an isolated position after you have completed the welding work. Do not remove the slag until the weld has cooled. If you want to continue a weld after an interrupti- on, the slag from your initial attempt must fi rst be removed. TIG welding Before you begin TIG welding with the machine, make sure that the machine has been switched off at the On/Off switch (11). Then set the selec- tor switch for electrode/TIG welding (14) to TIG welding. For details of how to proceed, please read the instructions provided with your TIG welding torch set. Caution! If large gas cylinders are used, they must be se- cured against tipping over! Overheating guard The welding set is fi tted with an overheating guard that protects the welding transformer from overheating. If the overheating guard trips, the control lamp (4) on your set will be lit. Allow the welding set to cool for a time.
