5. Before first using this appliance
- Ensure that all packaging material has been removed from the appliance (protective film, etc.).
- Under no circumstances remove the rating label or any warning labels. CAUTION: check that the appliance is not damaged. If any parts are damaged, do not use the appliance and contact a qualified service engineer.
- Place the appliance on a level, stable and heat-resistant surface. Do not place the appliance beneath an overhanging cupboard.
- Clean the appliance and the accessories before using it for the first time. This will remove any debris that might remain from the production process.
6. How to use this appliance
- Remove the kettle from the base unit to fill it with water.
- Pour the required amount of fresh water (note the maximum capacity of 4.0 litres); do not fill the water container past the fill level mark (9).
- Replace the steam cover and the teapot (5+7).
- Place the kettle onto the base unit (17). It can be placed in any position (360° rotation).
- Ensure that the adjusting knob (16) is turned anticlockwise until it reaches its detent.
- Then insert the plug into the mains socket.
- Turn the adjusting knob clockwise to its detent. The thermostat allows stepless adjustment of the degree of heat. You can choose between the settings: boil / interval boil / hot / warm.
- If you turn the adjusting knob to the detent, the water will boil rapidly. If you leave the adjusting knob in this position, the water will boil continuously until it eventually all evaporates. In order to avoid this continuous boiling function, push the knob back down until the signal light on the base unit goes out. Now the thermostat only switches on again when the temperature of the water drops, heating it again. In this way, the thermostat regulates energy supply in accordance with requirements, saving a great deal of energy. The signal light switches on and off in the thermostat cycle.BEEM – Elements of Lifestyle Seite 20 / 100
●●● - Boiling water: Adjusting knob turned to the detent; water temperature approx. 100°C - Interval boiling: Maximum 1/4 turn back - as soon as the water has boiled; water temperature approx. 95°C – 100°C ●● - Hot water: Adjusting knob turned back by about 1/3 (to the position marked "●●"); water temperature approx. 85°C – 95°C ● - Warm water: Adjusting knob turned back by about 2/3 (to the position marked "●"); water temperature approx. 60°C – 70°C
- When the water container is taken from the base unit it is disconnected from the electricity supply. The thermostat switches on again when it is placed back on the base unit.
- To switch off the water container completely, turn the knob anticlockwise to its detent. The signal light is extinguished.
- The signal light also extinguishes after a short time when all of the water in the water container has boiled away. For this reason, always check that there is sufficient water in the container, that the thermostat adjusting knob is in the right position and that continuous boiling is prevented. For safety reasons, remove the mains plug after the appliance has been used.
Making tea the Oriental way in accordance with the “samovar” principle Tea is not always like tea. Strictly speaking, tea is solely a watery infusion of the tea plant Camellia sinensis. This infusion can be black or green tea. It needs to be differentiated from tea-like products, so-called herbal and fruit teas. Making tea is therefore not always the same. To give them their valuable ingredients and taste, teas have water of different temperatures poured on them, and are left to brew for different amounts of time. Green tea, for example, is prepared preferentially with water at 85°C. The instructions for how to prepare the tea indicated on the packet should be observed in any case. a) Black tea
- Fill the strainer (2) with tea leaves (approx. one teaspoon per cup) or put tea bags in the teapot without strainer (1 tea bag for approx. 1 - 2 cups).
- Place the steam cover securely in the opening of the kettle, and the teapot on top of the steamer ring. The base of the teapot is designed so that it precisely fits into the steam cover, hence guaranteeing stability. At the same time, the teapot is pre-heated.
- Remove the teapot from the water container.
Caution: hot steam will escape! A small amount of condensed water may also drip from the base of the teapot.
- Now pour boiling water over the tea from the tap. By lightly pushing downwards, the tap opens and you can then withdraw the water. As soon as you release it, it closes again. If you want to withdraw more water, to fill the teapot up for example, tilt theBEEM – Elements of Lifestyle Seite 21 / 100
tap lever backwards. When you push the lever forwards again the water supply will be shut off.
- Add a maximum of 1 L to the teapot, up to the fill level mark (4).
- The more tea leaves or tea bags and the less water you place in the teapot, the stronger the tea concentrate (“professionals” like their infusion to have 2.86 g of tea per cup). It is better to use somewhat more tea so that a concentrate is actually formed in the teapot.
- Replace the teapot with the tea concentrate on the water container. The steam rising in the water container keeps the tea in the teapot at precisely the right temperature required for brewing.
- After the desired brewing time, remove the tea strainer from the teapot and replace the lid.
CAUTION: hot steam will escape. Use oven gloves.
- Next pour the required amount of tea concentrate from the teapot into your glass (to taste) and then top your glass up with water from the water container. This will allow you to vary the strength and taste of your tea.
- The teapot can be left on the water container when the appliance is operating, so you can help yourself to more tea at any time. Position the knob somewhat above the “●●” position (but not to the detent), so that the water remains hot but does not boil continuously. The signal light will illuminate and extinguish in cycle. However, the maximum heating setting should only be used for initial boiling of the water. b) Green Tea
- Green tea can also be prepared with the the samovar. Green tea should generally not be brewed with boiling water as this gives it a slightly bitter taste. Depending on the kind of tea, the ideal water temperature is 50 – 90 °C. Most green teas develop their optimum taste at around 80 °C. The higher the quality of the green tea, the lower the optimum water temperature. Teas of the highest quality are brewed with water at 50 – 60 °C.
- Normal green teas must infuse for 1 to 3 minutes, whilst high-grade green teas only need around 1 to 1½ minutes. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions when using tea bags.
- Green tea is always dosed less than black tea. Around 1 g per 100 ml or 1 level teaspoon to 200 ml of water. You can determine the strength of the concentrate yourself.
- Boil the water in the water container. Then pour some hot water into the cups (the teapot has been pre-warmed on the water container during the boiling process). Then turn the adjusting knob back to the “●”position (depending on the type of tea) and allow the water to cool down a little (approx. 3 - 5 minutes). Now pour hot water from the water container onto the tea (note the fill level mark (4)). Place the teapot on top of the water container as described before so that the tea remains hot, and then proceed as for black tea. c) Herbal tea Important information: Herbal, fruit, rooibos and spice teas always require boiling water and have to brew for at least 5 - 10 minutes! This is the only way to ensure a safe product!
- Herbal teas – whether loose or tea bags – have to be made with boiling water and the indicated brewing time should be adhered to. This is because in herbal tea blendsBEEM – Elements of Lifestyle Seite 22 / 100
there may, in rare cases, be germs such as salmonella which are killed by heating. With the wrong preparation these may become a health risk, especially with children’s teas.
- Herbal tea should never be made with just warm water in order to bring it quicker to a drinkable temperature, for example. For babies, small children and sick people in particular there may be health risks here if, in an unfortunate case, there are germs in the herbal tea. Herbal tea which has been brewed should also not be left standing for several hours. This is because although the boiling water kills the germs, spores in the herbal tea are not killed. These may germinate in warm water.
8. Cleaning and maintenance
1. Switch off the appliance, disconnect it from the mains supply and allow it to
2. Empty the utensil after every use. Then clean it using a damp cloth and, if
you wish, some ordinary washing-up liquid. Rinse out the utensil with fresh water.
3. Never immerse the appliance in water. Just wipe it with a damp cloth.
4. If the limescale filters in the
water container becomes blocked up, they can be removed. Remove the filter from inside tap’s entry point. (see diagram). It can then easily be removed. After having been cleaned in the dishwasher or with a mild soap, insert it from the inside again.
5. The removable parts should not be cleaned in a dishwasher. Please clean the
gold-plated or chrome-plated parts carefully. Use any common detergent.
6. Do not use solvents or benzine to clean the equipment. Aggressive cleaning
materials, steel-wool soap pads, scouring pads and handwash paste are also unsuitable. Note: The samovar’s water tank must be emptied completely and cleaned at regular intervals to avoid the formation of harmful germs. The water tank must be de-scaled every 1 - 2 weeks (depending on water quality and frequency of use):
1. Fill the water container with water and either de-scaler or vinegar essence,
and very briefly heat up. Allow with the de-scaling mixture some time to have an effect.
2. Rinse the container a few times and pour out the de-scaling mixture along
with the dislodged limescale. Leave a fraction of the decalcifying solution to drain through the tap in order to rid it of any limescale which might be there: Rinse with fresh water, and likewise let it run through the tap. - The knob is in the right position.
- Other appliances with high wattage are in operation simultaneously, causing the main fuse to blow. If this happens disconnect the utensil from the mains first. Then reconnect the fuse.
- If the main fuse blows, this is normally an indication of a fault. In this case, qualified service personnel should check the appliance.
WARNING Danger of burns Before cleaning, always remove the plug and allow the utensil to cool down. Only clean it when it has cooled down fully.
DANGER Danger to life from electric shock Never immerse the water container in water or any other liquid.
CAUTION Risk of damage to the appliance If lime scale covers the bottom of the boiler the appliance can be damaged (accumulation of heat). De-scale the appliance regularly.
