Frequently Asked Questions - RIVER ilm Palmer

What types of audio signals can I connect to the INPUT input?
The INPUT input (6.3 mm jack) accepts a line signal from a guitar preamp or the speaker output of a guitar amplifier (max. 120 W at 8 Ω). Use a suitable shielded cable.
How to use the ATT attenuator?
The ATT button offers three attenuation levels: 0 dB (for line signal), 15 dB (amp up to 10 W) and 30 dB (amp between 10 and 120 W). Adjust it according to the source to avoid saturation.
What does the TONE switch do?
It selects the speaker simulation: BYPASS (raw signal), NORMAL (standard sound), BRIGHT (bright sound) and MELLOW (soft sound). Choose according to the desired sound.
What is the LIFT/GND switch for?
It cuts or maintains the ground connection between input and output to eliminate ground loops. Try both positions to reduce noise.
Can I use this device with a tube amplifier?
Yes, but be careful: the box offers no load resistance. You must connect a speaker or dummy load to the THRU jack to avoid damaging the amplifier.
What is the maximum power supported by the input?
The input accepts up to 120 W at 8 Ω from a guitar amplifier. Beyond that, the unit may be damaged.
How to connect the XLR output?
Use a balanced XLR cable to connect the output to a mic/line input of a mixer or audio interface. Ensure the channel is muted during connection to avoid parasitic noise.
Does the device require power supply?
No, it is a passive model: it operates without batteries or external power. The internal transformer provides isolation.
What to do in case of humming?
Try activating the ground lift (LIFT) and move the device away from strong magnetic fields (transformers, etc.). Also check cables and grounding.
How to clean the device?
Disconnect all cables. Clean the aluminum housing with a slightly damp soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive products.

INTRODUCTION

The passive speaker simulation DI box ilm, especially for guitarists, is integrated between the effects device or guitar preamp or amplifier and mixer. Behind a preamp (line signal) or connected between an amplifier and loudspeaker, the Speaker Simulation DI box enables the direct input of guitar signals into the mixer without a microphone. An integrated filter circuit simulates the sound of the speaker required for authentic reproduction. The sound characteristics can be switched between "Bypass", "Normal", "Bright" and "Mellow".

CONNECTIONS AND OPERATING ELEMENTS

1. INPUT

Audio input with 6.3 mm jack socket.

A. Connect a guitar preamp using a shielded line cable.
B. Connect the speaker output of a guitar amplifier using a speaker cable.

Palmer RIVER ilm - INPUT - 1

WARNING: Amplifiers must not be operated in bridge mode on the speaker simulation box

Palmer RIVER ilm - INPUT - 2

WARNING: If an amplifier is operated on the speaker simulation DI box, the ground ection between input and output must be separated (switch no. 6 in the non-pressed LIFT position).

Palmer RIVER ilm - INPUT - 3

WARNING: The amplifier output of a connected amplifier must not exceed 120 W at 8 ohms!

Palmer RIVER ilm - INPUT - 4

ATTENTION: CAUTION when using a tube amplifier: There is no load resistance in the speaker simulation box! To prevent damage to the amplifier, before switching on the amplifier, a suitable guitar loudspeaker or load resistor on the THRU jack socket must connected using a speaker cable!

2. THRU

The INPUT signal (INPUT) is output unchanged via the 6.3 mm jack socket THRU.

3. ATT = attenuator

Rotary switch for adjusting the output level. Recommendation:

Connecting a guitar preamp (line signal): 0 dB attenuation

Connection of an practice amplifier up to an output power of approx. 10 W: 15 dB attenuation

Connection of an amplifier over 10 W output power (max. 120 W @ 8 ohms): 30 dB attenuation

4. TONE

Rotary switch for setting the sound characteristics of the output signal.

1 BYPASS: Sound unchanged at time of input signal
2 NORMAL: Standard sound setting
3 BRIGHT: Bright sound
4 MELLOW: Soft sound

5. OUTPUT

Balanced audio output with a male 3-pin XLR socket. Use a balanced shielded cable (microphone cable) to connect the speaker simulation DI box to a balanced input of a mixer or audio interface.

6. LIFT/GND

Switch for disconnecting the ground connection from the input and output (ground lift). In the unpressed position, the ground connection is disconnected; the connection is established when the switch is pressed. Being able to prevent a humming loop using the ground lift switch depends on the grounding of the connected device. It is therefore possible that both one and the other switch position is able to effectively reduce or eliminate humming.

Palmer RIVER ilm - LIFT/GND - 1

ATTENTION: Connecting signal cables can cause a lot of noise. Please ensure that the input

channel (mixer, audio interface, etc.) is muted during plugging. Otherwise, noise levels may cause damage.

PLEASE NOTE: Strong magnetic fields can cause humming. Therefore, do not position the speaker simulation DI box near strong magnetic fields (e.g. mains transformer).
