DIGITAL THERMOMETER FOR BABIES16) The battery is not replaceable. Do not try to remove it. FEVER Fever has to be considered as a symptom and not as an illness: in general, it signals that the body is fighting against an infection. In fact, it represents a body defense reaction characterized by the increase in body temperature beyond 37°C and by an increase in the heart and respiration rate. Usually, temperature within our body is of about 37.5°C and this is in fact the value measured using the rectal method; temperature measured in the mouth is lower by about 0.5°C (37°C); while underarm temperature is lower by 1°C ( 36.5°C). Therefore, it can be inferred that the correct temperature measurement is extremely important and has to be carried out using solid means and possibly not in moments, in which body temperature may be physiologically higher (when waking up, after meals). In a healthy person, temperature is influenced by many factors:
- individualvalueofsuchperson(individualmetabolism);
- age(nurslingsandyoungbabiesshowahigherbodytemperature,which decreases with age. In case of babies, temperature changes more intensely, faster and more often);
- phaseofthemenstrualcycle. It is necessary to consider that skin temperature can be affected particularly by the room temperature. Underarm temperature measurement is, in fact, less reliable than oral and rectal measurement. Therefore, the measurement method of your new digital thermometer with pacifier is very appreciated since it is not invasive, as well as precise and reliable. It is necessary to consider that the thermometer shall be already in the room, in which the measurement will be carried out, half an hour before the actual measurement performance; the baby, instead, shall be staying in the room for at least 10 minutes before performing the measurement. The following table shows a list of the "usual" average temperature values: in any case, it is recommended to get used to recognize the common temperature of the own baby when he/she is healthy in order to be able to interpret the various detected values correctly.
MEASUREMENT METHOD COMMON AVERAGE
UNDERARM 36.5°C ORAL 37°C RECTAL 37.5°C EAR 37°C Every type of thermometer is suitable for the measurement of body temperature in a specific area of the body: front thermometer is suitable only for performing measurements on the front; ear thermometer is suitable only for performing measurements in the ear; quicksilver thermometer is suitable for performing the traditional rectal, underarm and oral measurement; the thermometer with pacifier is suitable only for oral measurement. According to the point, in which the measurement is carried out, a different

DIGITAL THERMOMETER FOR BABIEStemperature value is detected. The change can be equal to 0.2-1°C. It is not possible to compare the temperature detected using different measurement methods. Therefore, it is necessary to consider in case of self-diagnosis or when referring to the own physician, the type of thermometer used and the area of the body where the temperature was measured.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR A CORRECT USE
1) Remove the protective cover.
Before any use, disinfect the silicone pacifier using a cloth moistened with alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) or with hot water and some neutral detergent. Do not immerse the thermometer in water or any other liquids. Make sure that the silicone pacifier is integral.
2) Switch on the thermometer using the O/I key.
The device emits a short acoustic signal. On the display, all function symbols switch on just for few seconds. Then, the thermometer displays for some seconds the last measurement performed followed by L°C. When the symbol °C blinks, the device is ready for use.
3) Insert the thermometer in the mouth of the baby.
The display keeps displaying L°C till the mouth temperature is measured. It is suggested to let the thermometer in the mouth of the baby for about 6/8 minutes to allow the thermometer to measure temperature as precisely as possible. If temperature is lower than 32.0°C, the display shows “L” (Low); if the temperature exceeds 42.0°C, the display shows “H” (High). Caution! Drinking or eating hot or cold beverages and foodstuffs can alter the measurement results. It is suggested to measure the temperature after about 30 minutes from the last meal.
4) After having measured the temperature, the thermometer emits a long acoustic
signal. Switch off the thermometer by pressing the key O/I. The thermometer switches off automatically after 10 minutes.
5) It is suggested to repeat the measurement when the previous measurement is
interrupted. Should it not be possible to measure the temperature, the thermometer stores L°C. At the end of each measurement, clean the silicone pacifier and close the thermometer with its protective cover. Preserve the device in a fresh and dry place, out of reach of babies.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Cleaning operations have to be carried out before and after using the thermometer. Disinfect the silicone pacifier using a cloth moistened with alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) or with hot water and some neutral detergent. Dry using a soft cloth. Do not immerse the thermometer in water or other liquids. Never use chemical or abrasive products. The silicone pacifier is the most fragile part of the thermometer. Pay utmost care during its cleaning. Do not use alcohol to clean the display. Preserve the thermometer in a dry and clean place, away from direct sunlight. Do not sterilize or boil the thermometer.
