What you can do with ARGUS 360

What you can do with ARGUS 360

The ARGUS 360 is an electronic movement detector for ceiling mounting in indoor or outdoor areas. It registers moving sources of heat, such as people, within a defined area of detection (Figure 1):

Ⓐ Inner security zone: area of detection 360°, radius approx. 4 m.
⑧ Medium security zone: area of detection 360°, radius approx. 7 m.

(©) Outer security zone: area of detection 360°, approx. 16 m to the front, approx. 14 m to the rear and approx. 20 m across.

Note: The specified ranges refer to average conditions and a mounting height of 2.5 m and should therefore be taken as guide values. The range and sensitivity can vary greatly depending on the temperature.

ARGUS 360 is designed for mounting on a ceiling or in a 60 mm ceiling installation box. When it detects a movement, it switches the connected loads.

Note: ARGUS 360 is not suitable for use as a component of an alarm system since it is supplied from the mains and will switch the connected alarm whenever the mains supply fails and is established again, regardless of whether or not a movement is detected (false alarm).

How to choose an installation site

  • Mount the ARGUS 360 on the ceiling in such a way that the area to be monitored is covered optimally. If possible, mount the ARGUS 360 sideways to the direction in which people walk (Figure 2).
  • Mounting height: 2–3 m, optimal is 2.5 m (Figure 3③)
  • Movement detectors can detect all objects that radiate heat. For this reason, you should select an installation site that will not result in

unwanted heat sources being detected. Leave a distance of at least 5 m (Figure 3③).

  • Mount the lighting which is to be switched by ARGUS 360 above it, not below it (Figure 3③).
  • ARCUS 360 has type of protection IP 55 and is therefore suitable for use in outdoor areas as well. To make sure that the lighting is not switched on by environmental influences, make sure that ARGUS is sheltered from rain and direct sunlight if possible (for example, raindrops running down the lens could cause the movement detector to switch) (Figure 4).
  • If you are installing several movement detectors, make sure that the areas of detection of the individual detectors overlap (Figure 5).

Further information can be found in the 'Merten Technical Information', in the section 'ARGUS movement detector'.

Risk of electrocution

ARGUS 360 may only be installed and connected by professional electricians. Please observe the relevant regulations in your own country.

Risk of electrocution

The output may carry an electrical current even when the load is switched off. Always disconnect the fuse in the incoming circuit from the supply before working on connected loads.

① Open the condensation water opening (Figure 6).
② Open the cable routing opening (Figure 7).
③ Use the screws supplied to mount the ceiling housing direct on the ceiling (Figure 8②) or in the ceiling installation box (0 60 mm, Figure 8③) in such a way that the area of detection required (16 m to the front + 14 m to the rear and 20 m across) corresponds to the imprint on the ceiling housing.

Figure 9

① Strip the connecting cable insulation by a length of 11 mm.
② Insert the external conductor into terminal 'L'.
③ Insert the neutral conductor into terminal "N".
④ Insert the connected external conductor into terminal "↓".

'Through-wiring' to other loads is permitted. Release the terminals by pulling and turning the conductor at the same time.

Note When switching inductive loads such as transformers, relays, contactors or fluorescent lamps, spikes occur which could lead to the load being switched on again ("maintained light effect"). Connect a capacitor (542895) parallel to the inductive load in order to reduce these spikes.

Installation options (Figure 10):

Ⓐ ARGUS constantly connected to the mains: ARGUS monitors its area constantly.
③ ARGUS combined with two-way switch: depending on the switch position, either maintained light or automatic mode.
☑ ARGUS combined with break contact: ARGUS is always ready for operation. By pressing the push-button (the power is briefly disconnected for 2–3 seconds), ARGUS is switched on for the set time. Every further movement increases the switching duration.
① ARGUS parallel: several ARGUS devices working together can switch a lamp group when the maximum switching capacity of one device is not exceeded. To achieve this, you must reduce the sensitivity of the devices. For technical and functional reasons, we do not advise forming larger device groups using more than four ARGUS devices.

How to mount the ARGUS sensor button

① ARGUS combined with two-circuit switch: depending on the switch position, either automatic mode or "OFF". In position A, the luminaire is switched on by ARGUS (automatic) and in position B, it is switched on continuously (manual).
☐ ARGUS parallel to staircase timer: either ARGUS or the staircase timer switches the lights on for a certain period.

How to mount the ARGUS sensor button

① Check the functioning of the two settings switches on the ARGUS sensor head (Figure 14), see following section for an explanation.
Note: Wait until you have made all the necessary settings before attaching the cover to the screw opening, since removing it again could damage it.
② Place the ARGUS sensor head onto the connection box and fasten it using the two screws provided (Figure 12).

How to put ARGUS into operation

How ARGUS 360 reacts when the mains voltage is switched on:

After the mains voltage has been switched on, ARGUS 360 carries out a function test for approx. 10 s. During this function test, it switches the connected loads on and switches them off again once the test has been completed. While this is happening, the functional display (Figure 12) lights up for approx. 10 s.

Using operating elements:

The sensitivity and switching duration is set using the operating elements which are found on the inside of the ARGUS 360 sensor head (Figure 14):

⑭ Brightness sensor: must not be covered

Carrying out a function test, setting the switching duration and the brightness threshold

In order to make the settings, you must remove the ARGUS sensor button from the upper part of ARGUS and remount it again when the settings have been completed.

① Set the brightness threshold (Figure 14(A)) to daytime operation (sun symbol/right stop).
② Set the switching duration (Figure 14(B)) to 1 s (left stop).
ARGUS 360 now switches on for 1 s every time it detects a movement, no matter what the ambient brightness is.
③ Test the functionality of ARGUS 360 and the loads connected to it by walking to and fro in the detection area.
④ Set the setting switch Ⓐ to the brightness threshold required.
ARGUS 360 reactions now depend on the brightness level. The brightness threshold determines the ambient brightness from which point ARGUS 360 should react to movements it detects.
⑤ Again, carry out a test by walking to and fro to see whether the lighting switches on at the brightness threshold set.
When everything is working as it should:
⑥ set the switching duration required at the setting switch Ⓔ.

How to put ARGUS into operation

Set the brightness threshold:

here (Figure 14③) you can infinitely adjust the ambient brightness level at which movements should be detected and a switching procedure should be triggered.

① Set the brightness threshold (Figure 15):

  • Right stop (sun symbol: Day and night operation (approve, 1000 luxury), all movements in the area of detection will be detected, independent of the external brightness.
  • Left stop (moon symbol): Night operation (polar white: approx. 3 lux, dark brazil: approx. 5 lux), movements are only detected in the dark.

Setting the switching duration:

you can use this (Figure 10) to set how long the loads connected to ARGUS remain switched on for; there are six levels to choose from. When ARGUS 360 detects a movement, the load is switched on and stays switched on until the set period has elapsed. Every further movement puts the switching duration back to the start.

Note: ARGUS 360 ignores the light-sensitive switch after the load has been switched on. If the movement detector does not switch the load off again, the reason is probably that ARGUS has detected further movements and has restarted the switching duration several times.
① Setting the switching duration:

- Left stop: Switching duration approx. 1 s

- Right stop: switching duration approx. 8 min
