What types of batteries can I charge with the Velleman VLE5?

This charger is designed for rechargeable batteries of type NiCd and NiMH. Never attempt to charge alkaline or other non-rechargeable batteries.

How to set the charging voltage and current?

Before connecting the batteries, select the appropriate charging voltage (2.8 V to 14 V according to the number of cells) and set the charging current between 500 mA and 1000 mA. Use a current of about 0.4 times the capacity (e.g., 480 mA for 1200 mAh).

What does each LED color mean?

Red = charging in progress; Yellow = discharging in progress; Green = charge complete or trickle mode activated (after more than 6 hours of charging).

How to use the discharge function?

Connect the batteries, then press the DISCHARGE button. The LED turns yellow. You can press DISCHARGE again to switch to fast charge (red LED). Otherwise, the charger automatically switches to fast charge after discharge.

What to do if charging takes more than 6 hours?

For safety, the charger automatically switches to trickle charge mode. The LED turns green. This prevents overcharging of the batteries.

Can I charge batteries of different capacities and types at the same time?

No, always charge batteries of the same type (NiCd or NiMH) and preferably of the same capacity. Never mix the two types.

How to maintain the VLE5 charger?

Unplug the charger from the mains before cleaning. Use a slightly damp lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvent. Never immerse the device in liquid.

What to do in case of malfunction or visible damage?

If the casing or cable is damaged, do not use the charger. Entrust any repair to an authorized dealer. Never open the device yourself, risk of electric shock.

What are the important safety precautions?

Use the charger in a dry place, sheltered from rain. Leave space around it for ventilation. Place it on a heat-resistant surface. Disconnect it when not in use. Never short-circuit the contacts.

What is the warranty for this product?

For consumers in the EU, the warranty is 24 months against manufacturing defects. After 1 year, reimbursement may be partial. Damage due to misuse is excluded. Keep your receipt.

Velleman nv will not be held responsible for damaged to a connected battery-packs. Before connecting a battery pack you should make sure that the voltage, polarity and current are correct. Do not change either voltage or polarity during operation. Contact your local dealer when in doubt.

2. Safety Instructions

Keep the adapter away from children and unauthorized users.

Dry location use only. Keep this adaptor away from rain and moisture. Never put objects filled with liquid on top of or close to the adaptor.

DO NOT disassemble or open the cover under any circumstances. Touching live wires can cause life-threatening electroshocks.

The housing might heat up during usage. Keep minimum distances around the apparatus for sufficient ventilation. Place the adaptor on a flat heat resistant surface.

Always disconnect mains power when the adaptor is not in use or when servicing or maintenance activities are performed. Do not pull the cable!

Only insert rechargeable NiCd or Ni-NH batteries. Any attempt to rec harge other battery types or non-rechargeable batteries may result in exploding batteries, injury and a damaged device.

Do not use the adaptor when damage to housing or cables is noticed. Do not attempt to service the device yourself but contact an authorised dealer.

3. General Guidelines

Refer to the Velleman® Service and Quality Warranty on the last pages of this manual.

Keep this adaptor away from dust and extreme heat.

Protect this adaptor from shocks and abuse. Avoid brute force when operating the device.

• Familiarise yourself with the functions of the adaptor before actually using it.
• All modifications of the adaptor are forbidden for safety reasons. Damage caused by user modifications to the device is not covered by the warranty.
• Only use the adaptor for its intended purpose. Using the device in an unauthorised way will void the warranty.
• Damage caused by disregard of certain guidelines in this manual is not covered by the warranty and the dealer will not accept responsibility for any ensuing defects or problems.

CAUTION:

• Always make sure the load on the charger does not exceed the rated output current of the charger.
• Never short-circuit the output terminals.
• Disconnect the charger from the mains and remove the batteries when it is not being used.

4. Operating Instructions

• Connect the charger with an AC outlet.
• Select the appropriate charge voltage.
• Select the appropriate charge current. We recommended to select a charge current between 0.25C and 1C (C = the battery's capacity).
• Example: charging a 2.4V / 1200mAh battery pack. The charge voltage is 2.8V, the charge current is 1200mAh x 0.4 = 480mA. Choose the 500mA charge current.

- Connect the battery pack with the charger. The LED will turn red to indicate the battery pack is being charged.

Note: Do not mix the two battery types (NiCd & NiMH).

- Press the discharge button. The LED will turn yellow to indicate that the discharge process has started.

- Press the discharge button during the discharge process to switch to the fast-charge mode, as indicated by the LED (turns red).

- When you don't press the discharge button during the discharge process, then the charger will automatically switch to the fast-charge mode once the discharge process is finished. The LED turns red to confirm this.

- The LED will turn green when the battery pack is fully charged.

- If the fast-charge process takes more than 6 hours, then the charger automatically switches to trickle charge mode for safety reasons. The LED will turn green to confirm that the trickle charge mode has been activated. - Disconnect the battery pack from the charger.

- Disconnect the charger from the AC outlet.

5. Maintenance

• Disconnect the charger from the mains and wipe it with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents.
• Do not submerge the charger in water or any other liquid.
• There are no user-serviceable parts inside the adaptor. Refer to an authorized dealer for service and/or spare parts.

General Warranty Conditions Concerning Consumer Products (for EU):

- All consumer products are subject to a 24-month warranty on production flaws and defective material as from the original date of purchase.

- Velleman® can decide to replace an article with an equivalent article, or to refund the retail value totally or partially when the complaint is valid and a free repair or replacement of the article is impossible, or if the expenses are out of proportion.

You will be delivered a replacing article or a refund at the value of 100% of the purchase price in case of a flaw occurred in the first year after the date of purchase and delivery, or a replacing article at 50% of the purchase price or a refund at the value of 50% of the retail value in case of a flaw occurred in the second year after the date of purchase and delivery.

- Not covered by warranty:

• all direct or indirect damage caused after delivery to the article (e.g. by oxidation, shocks, falls, dust, dirt, humidity...), and by the article, as well as its contents (e.g. data loss), compensation for loss of profits;
• frequently replaced consumable goods, parts or accessories such as batteries, lamps, rubber parts, drive belts... (unlimited list);
• flaws resulting from fire, water damage, lightning, accident, natural disaster, etc. ...;
• flaws caused deliberately, negligently or resulting from improper handling, negligent maintenance, abusive use or use contrary to the manufacturer's instructions;
• damage caused by a commercial, professional or collective use of the article (the warranty validity will be reduced to six (6) months when the article is used professionally);
• damage resulting from an inappropriate packing and shipping of the article;
• all damage caused by modification, repair or

alteration performed by a third party without written permission by Velleman®.

• Articles to be repaired must be delivered to your Velleman® dealer, solidly packed (preferably in the original packaging), and be completed with the original receipt of purchase and a clear flaw description.
• Hint: In order to save on cost and time, please reread the manual and check if the flaw is caused by obvious causes prior to presenting the article for repair. Note that returning a non-defective article can also involve handling costs.
  • Repairs occurring after warranty expiration are subject to shipping costs.
• The above conditions are without prejudice to all commercial warranties.
