PREPARING ESPRESSO COFFEE

Espresso is a strong coffee, with a characteristic taste, extremely rich in aroma. Therefore, the water, which arrives in the filter with a high temperature, is pushed very fast through the coffee mass by a strong pressure. It extracts the nectar from the grinding and draws the essential aromas from the coffee. That's why the espresso is usually served in small "espresso" cups. Use preferably a special espresso coffee with suitable roasting and grinding. Remember that the espresso needs a finer grinding than the standard coffee.

Filter and filter holder for ground coffee

  • Put the filter-locking ring (15) around the filter for ground coffee (14) and then put this filter into the classic filter holder (13). The locking ring makes it possible to hold the filter when throwing away the used ground coffee.

  • Fill the filter (14) with special espresso coffee powder. The amount of powder depends on your own taste and the numbers of cups you want to make (the recommended dose is one measuring spoon (21) per cup). Generally it is recommended to press the coffee with the tamper.

Fix the filter holder (13) into the appliance. Therefore you should turn the handle to the left. Then put the filter holder into the connection hole of the filter holder (11) and turn it firmly to the right until it is locked in place. The filter holder (13) should be put as far as possible to the right side of the locking zone and it should be situated at least in the middle of the appliance. This will prevent the filter holder from loosing during the pressure increase, when the coffee is percolating.

If the filter holder is not locked into the locking zone and if it is not at least situated in the middle of the appliance, do not switch on the appliance, but take the filter holder out of the espresso machine and try to put it into the right position again (as mentioned above).

  • Put one or two cups under the openings of the filter holder.
Make sure that the switches are in the OFF position.
  • Now press the On/Off switch (7). The button will stay down in its "pressed" position and the power light will burn indicating that the appliance is warming up.
  • Wait until the control light of the espresso function (6) burns. Wenn it is on, press the pump button (3). The control light of the pump will burn. The pump will switch on and after a few seconds the coffee will flow out of the openings of the filter holder. At the beginning you can hear that the pump will make more noise than when the water starts flowing. This is absolutely normal.
  • When the cups are filled, press the pump button again and the water will stop flowing.
To make other espressos, empty the filter. Therefore you have to remove the filter holder by turning it to the left. CAUTION: Be careful when you remove the filter holder (13) because the metal parts may be hot. Never remove the filter holder (13) when the pump button and/or the switches are turned on. Empty the filter holder above the bin. Rinse the accessories with clear water and fill the filter again with the desired amount of coffee.
  • Proceed as described here above.

Remarks:

  • When using the appliance for the first time of after a long period of non-use, it is recommended to let run through the hydraulic system at least one cup of water. Place one cup under the steam pipe (10), turn the steam control knob anti-clockwise and press the pump button (3). Water will come out of the steam pipe. As soon as the cup is filled, press the pump button (3) again and turn the steam control knob (1) clockwise till the end. Then make your espresso as described above.
If you cannot remove the filter holder because of the pressure, let off steam by turning the steam control knob anti-clockwise. Then try again.

Filter and filter holder for coffee pads

This filter was exclusively designed for the use of 45mm big coffee pads and has to be used in combination with filter holder funnel for coffee pads (17) and the creamer disk (18). If you intend to use ground coffee, you have to use the classic filter holder and the filter for ground coffee (13 and 14) and follow the instructions below.

Attention: Unlike the classic filter holder, the filter holder for coffee pads allows you to make only one cup of coffee at a time. For more cups you just have to repeat the following operation.

  • Put the filter holder funnel (17) into the filter holder for coffee pads (19) and make sure that the backside of the filter holder locks into the filter holder opening.
  • Put the creamer disk (18) in the filter holder funnel (17). This disk has two parts, which have to be put together: a rubber ring and a metallic disk. As soon as they are put together, the side of the metallic disk should be pointed downwards (in the direction of the filter holder funnel).
  • Put the filter for coffee pads (16) on the creamer disk and push until it is fixed onto the filter holder.
  • Put the coffee pad into the filter (16).
  • Put the filter holder (19) into the appliance. Therefore turn the handle of the filter holder leftwards, slide the filter holder into the connection hole (11) and turn it firmly rightwards until it is locked in place. The filter holder (19) should be put as far as possible to the right side of the locking zone and it should be situated at least in the middle of the appliance. This will prevent the filter holder from loosing during the pressure increase, when the coffee is percolating.
If the filter holder is not locked into the locking zone and if it is not at least situated in the

  • When the cup is filled, press the pump button again and the water will stop flowing.
To make other espressos, empty the filter. Therefore you have to remove the filter holder by turning it to the left. CAUTION: Be careful when you remove the filter holder (19) because the metal parts may be hot. Never remove the filter holder (19) when the pump button, steam function button and/or the switches are turned on. There might be some hot water left under the creamer disk (18); be aware of this and don't get burned.
Rinse the accessories with clear water and put a new coffee pad into the filter.

HOW TO PREPARE A CAPPUCCINO

  • First of all prepare a coffee as described above letting enough space in the cup for the milk.

Caution: Before using the cappuccino function, make sure the filter holder has been removed from its support.

In order to obtain thick and creamy milk froth it is necessary to evacuate the remaining water in the hydraulic circuit of the appliance.

  • Turn on the appliance with the On/Off switch (7).
  • Let the steam knob (3) in OFF position, swing the steam pipe (10) to the right and put a recipient under the steam pipe.
  • Press the steam function button (5). A little water or steam might escape while the appliance is warming up. This is absolutely normal. As soon as the control light of the steam

function (a) turns on, put a recipient under the steam pipe and turn the steam control knob (1) anti-clockwise. The superfluous water will flow in the recipient and a strong steam spurt will follow. Turn the Steam control knob clockwise to stop the steam spurt.

  • Then fill the desired milk quantity into a heat resistant container (it has to be large enough to avoid splashing, do not fill more than half of the recipient) and place it under the steam pipe. Immerse the steam nozzle completely in the milk in order to avoid splashing. We recommend you to use semi-skimmed cold milk only; do not use hot milk.

TEAM EXP 7 - Caution: Before using the cappuccino function, make sure the filter holder has been removed from its support. - 1

  • Turn the steam control knob (1) anti-clockwise. During this operation the control light of the steam function (4) will regularly go on and out. This means that the appliance is constantly heating the water in order to produce steam. We therefore advice you not to start the steaming release until the light has turned on.
  • As soon as you have frothing and creamy milk, stop the steaming release by tuming the steam control knob (1) clockwise.

Caution: the steam pipe (10) should not touch the bottom of the container because it may interfere with the steam flow.

Clean the steam pipe (10) after each use especially when it has been immersed in milk. If you do not clean it, the inner side of the pipe can get blocked and it will be difficult to remove the milk residues around it. The plastic nozzle of the pipe can be removed for cleaning by simply pulling it down. In case of obstruction of the pipe, use a needle to remove the milk residues. Just after having lathered up the milk, wipe the body of the pipe first with a damp cloth, then keep the cloth against the steam outlet and slowly open the steam control knob (1); let the steam escape for one or two seconds in order to throw out the milk residues and then close the knob (1).

CAUTION: PAY ATTENTION NOT TO GET BURNED WITH THE STEAM AND THE METAL PART OF THE PIPE

PREPARING A TEA OR OTHER HOT BEVERAGES

This appliance can also just provide hot water to make tea or other hot beverages. After having read the instructions about the first use of the appliance, put a receptacle under the steam pipe (10) and wait for the control light of the espresso function (6) to turn on. As soon as the control light burns (6), turn the steam control knob anticlockwise and press the pump button (3) at the same time. Hot water will run out of the pipe.

Once you have reached the desired amount of hot water, press the pump button (3) again to put it in the "off-position" and turn the steam control knob (1) clockwise.

CLEANING

Body of the appliance: Before cleaning the appliance turn it off, unplug it and wait until it has cooled down. Wipe the body of the appliance with a moistened cloth. Never immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid.

Filters: The filters can be washed in soapy water. Should coffee residues obstruct the holes, use a small non-metallic brush to clean them.

Grid of the connection hole: The residue of ground coffee can be removed with a toothpick.

Steam pipe: See paragraph "Preparing a cappuccino".

Creamer disk: Separate the 2 components and clean them under warm water before putting them together again.

Drip tray plate: The drip tray plate is removable and can be cleaned in soapy water.

CAUTION: NEVER TRY TO OPEN OR DISASSEMBLE THE HOUSING OF THE APPLIANCE.

DESCALING

The espresso machine has to be descaled regularly. The frequency depends on the water hardness and of the use frequency.

  1. Remove the scale and the coffee residues from the filter holder. It is recommended to use only liquid descending agent that can be found in shops and in the proportions indicated on the packing paper by the producer.
  2. Put a container under the connection hole of the filter holder (11) and another one under the steam pipe (attention: never use the filter holders (13 and 19) when descending).
  3. Press the on/off switch (7) and turn the steam control knob (1) into an opened position and then press the pump button (3). Wait for the water to come out of the steam pipe
  4. After approximately 30 seconds, stop the hot water flow by turning off the steam control knob (1) and let the descending solution flow through the support of the filter holder in the container.
  5. When the solution has finished flowing, switch off the appliance and let it cool down.
  6. Repeat this operation a second time.

Then proceed in the same way but this time only with fresh water to rinse the inner side of the circuit. For a good rinsing, the equivalent of two espresso tanks has to pass through the circuit. Switch off the appliance and remove the plug from the power supply. Finally, let it cool down.

Caution: Never use vinegar like descending agent.

How do you know when you should descale the appliance?
