PREPARING THE MACHINE
We recommend to get used to all functions of your appliance before using it for the first time. Make sure the selector (D) is in off position (0/OFF) and that the appliance is unplugged.
Wash the accessories thoroughly in hot soapy water, rinse and dry them carefully.
Open the cap (A) and fill the water tank (B) with cold water - maximum 4 cups, as indicated on the glass jug (K) - and close the lid of the tank correctly to make sure that no steam pressure can escape.
Before the first use, operate the appliance 3 times with clear water (without coffee), to clean the internal circuit.
CAUTION
Neither open the water tank nor detach the filter holder during the preparation of coffee or when steam is coming out of the steam pipe, or more specifically when the appliance is still under pressure. The green pilot light (O) illuminates when the pressure is totally reduced.
However, follow the instructions below to test if the appliance is still under pressure.
- Make sure the selector (D) is in off position.
- Unplug the appliance.
- Hold a container with cold water under the steam pipe (H) and introduce the pipe in the water.
- Once the steam pipe (H) is immersed in water, put the selector knob (D) in steam position. Continue this until no more steam comes out of the pipe.
- Put the selector knob (D) in 0/OFF position.
- You can now remove the cap (A) of the tank and the filter holder (N).
- If there is still water in the tank, remove the glass jug and the drip tray, then turn the appliance upside down over a sink in order to empty the remaining water.
These safeguards are to be respected not only when the appliance is on but also during the 10-15 minutes following the stopping of the appliance.
special safeguards concerning the jug
In order to avoid breaking the jug:
- Don't heat the jug when it is empty.
- Change your jug if it is damaged.
- Do not use the jug if it is chipped or cracked.
- Do not place the hot jug on a cold or wet surface.
- Do not use the jug if the handle is cracked or broken.
- Do not use metal sponges to clean the jug, they could scratch and weaken the glass.
- Do not place the jug on or near an electric or gas stove, in a oven or in a microwave oven.
- Avoid shocks.
ESPRESSO FUNCTION
how to prepare an espresso
The espresso is a strong coffee, with a characteristic taste, extremely rich in aroma. Therefore, the water that arrives in the filter with a high temperature is pushed very fast through the coffee mass by a strong pressure. It extracts the nectar from the grinding and draws the
essential aromas from the coffee. That's why the espresso is usually served in small "espresso" cups.
Use preferably a special espresso coffee with suitable roasting and grinding. Remember that the espresso needs a finer grinding than the filter coffee.
- Make sure the appliance is unplugged.
- Pour the desired amount of water in the tank (B) as indicated above (fig. 6). Use the level indication on the glass jug (fig. 5). Close the lid (fig. 7).
- Detach the filter holder (N) by turning it to the left and taking it down. Fill the filter with the desired amount of ground coffee (fig. 1 and 2) and press the coffee in the filter. Put the filter holder back into position in the appliance by turning it from left to right until it locks. Make sure it is positioned correctly. Make sure the locking feature of the filter is as far as possible from the filter (fig. 3 and 4).
Marks on the jug:
Mark for 4 cups
Mark for 2 cups
Mark minimum quantity for steam production
- Make sure the drip tray (L) is placed (Fig. 8).
- Place the jug with its lid (G) under the filter holder (N) (Fig. 9).
- Plug in the appliance. Make sure the selector (D) is in off position.
- Switch on the expresso function. Put the selector knob (D) in □ position. The red pilot light (F) will illuminate. After a certain heating time, the water is pressed through the ground coffee.
- When the water tank is empty, the green pilot light illuminates. The brewing process is finished.
- Switch off the appliance by putting the selector in off position.
- Before detaching the filter holder, make sure the appliance is no longer under pressure.
CAUTION: Never remove the filter holder when the selector is not in off position.
CAUTION: be careful when emptying the filter, as the metal parts might still be hot. Remove the filter holder as described above and press the locking feature forward to hold the filter when throwing the ground coffee in the dustbin.
HOW TO PREPARE A CAPPUCCINO
You can use this appliance to froth milk to make cappuccino or hot chocolate or to heat up several other drinks.
First prepare an expresso as described above, but do not fill the cup completely in order to make sure that there is some space left for the milk foam.
- Fill the water tank (B) with the desired amount of water.
- Plug in the appliance. Make sure the selector (D) is in off position.
- Switch on the expresso function. Put the selector knob (D) in position. After a certain heating time, steam comes out of the steam pipe (H).
- Keep the cup filled (not more than halfway) with milk under the steam pipe and immerse the steam pipe in milk to froth it. Put the milk foam on the expresso with a spoon in order to obtain a real Italian cappuccino.
- Put the selector knob (D) in 0/OFF position after use.
- To empty the appliance, put a container under the steam pipe and put the selector in position. The remaining water comes out of the appliance.
Clean the steam pipe after each use. Especially if you immersed it in milk. Milk residues might obstruct the steam pipe. To clean the steam pipe (H), you can unscrew the steam pipe protection. If the pipe is obstructed, unclog it with a needle. If you just frothed milk, dry the steam pipe with some cloth, then maintain the cloth against the end of the pipe and put the selector (D) in position. Let steam escape for about 1 or 2 seconds to eliminate milk residues, then place the selector in off position.
CAUTION: Steam or metallic parts of the tube might be very hot, make sure not to get burned.
THERMOMETER
There is a thermometer on the front side of the appliance, it indicates the temperature of the pipes through which water flows to be pressed through the coffee. As the temperature sensor is not in direct contact with water, it might react a little later.
PREHEATING THE CUPS
Between the protection bars (C), there is a surface that allows preheating the cups (P). This surface heats up when the appliance is in use. Therefore we advise you to operate the appliance once with clear water before use in order to heat up the system. In the meantime, this will rinse the internal circuit.
CLEANING
Before cleaning, switch off the appliance, unplug it and let it cool down.
Main unit: Clean the plastic parts of the appliance with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive products. Never immerse it in water or any other liquid.
Removable parts: The removable parts are the filter holder (N), the filter (M), the drip tray (L) and the glas jug with its lid (K and G). These parts can be cleaned in soapy water. Rinse these parts with clear water and dry them thoroughly before installing them.
Caution: Never try to open or disassemble the unit.
DESCALING
The appliance must be descaled regularly. The frequency depends on the water hardness and of the use frequency.
-
Remove the scale and the coffee residues from the filter holder. t is recommended to use only liquid descaling agent that can be found in shops and in the proportions indicated on the packing paper by the producer. Pour the liquid in the water tank in the proportions indicated on the product's packaging.
-
Put a container under the opening of the filter holder and another container under the steam pipe (Caution: when descaling, remove the filter and clean it separately).
-
Fill the water tank with the product. Plug in the appliance and put the selector in position. Let the steam come out of the steam pipe for about 30 seconds, then let the rest come out of the opening of the filter holder.
-
When the product has passed, switch off the appliance and let it cool down.
-
Repeat this operation once again.
Operate the appliance 3 times with clear water to rinse the appliance. Switch off the appliance and unplug it. Let it cool down.
Caution: Never use vinegar to descale the appliance.
Signs showing that descaling is necessary are the following:
- When the noise level of the appliance rises during operation.
- The heating time is longer.
If you use the appliance frequently, it is advisable to descale the appliance frequently as follows:
• If water contains a small amount of limescale, descale once a year.
• If water contains a medium amount of limescale, descale three times a year.
• If water contains a large amount of limescale, descale once a month.
In case of doubt concerning the amount of limescale contact the local water distribution company.
