Please read and follow the operating instructions carefully and keep them for later reference. Enclose these instructions when you give this appliance to someone else. This appliance is intended for domestic use only. W Danger of electric shock! Only use the appliance indoors at room temperature and up to 2000 m above sea level. The appliance may only be connected to a power supply with alternating current via a correctly installed socket with earthing. Ensure that the protective conductor system of the domestic supply has been correctly installed. Connect and operate the appliance only according to the type plate specifications. To avoid potential hazards, repairs such as replacing a damaged cable must only be carried out by our customer service personnel. This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and if they understand the hazards involved. Keep children under 8 years of age away from the appliance and connecting cable and do not allow them to use the appliance. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are older than 8 years and supervised.

Never immerse the appliance or mains cable in water.

Never leave the appliance unattended while it is switched on! Use only if power cord and appliance show no signs of damage. Should a fault occur, pull the plug or disconnect from the mains immediately. W Risk of burns and fire! A misuse of the appliance can potentially lead to injury. During operation of the appliance the temperature of exposed surfaces may become very high. During operation only grasp the parts of the appliance and the glass jug by the handles provided. Do not place the appliance on or near hot surfaces, e.g. hobs. Avoid spatters of grease as the plastic may be damaged. Never cover the parking zone for the jug. After the use the heating element surfaces and warming plate can be subjected to residual heat. W Risk of suffocation! Do not allow children to play with packaging material.

–– Fill water tank with clean, cold water only. Never add milk or beverages such as tea or coffee, or this will damage the appliance.

–– Never exceed the top marking (line) when you fill the tank with water. –– Use coffee with a medium grind (approx. 7 g per cup). –– Do not brew less than the minimum amount of 4 � / 3 �, or the coffee will not have the desired strength and temperature. –– Never remove the jug while the machine is brewing coffee as this may cause the filter holder to overflow. –– Place the jug in the coffee machine only with the lid closed. 10

–– Don’t use other jugs, or the special drip protector will block the flow of coffee.

–– If condensation accumulates on the filter housing, it does not indicate that the coffee machine is defective.

Before using for the first time

■■ Remove any stickers or film.

■■ Pull enough of the power cable out of the storage compartment and plug in. ■■ To clean, fill the water tank with 6 cups of water and replace it. ■■ Put the jug into the appliance and switch on with button a. ■■ Repeat the cleaning process. Info: The new appliance may emit a ­harmless odour. If this is the case, fill with a diluted vinegar solution (1 cup of vinegar to 5 cups of water) and run the cleaning programme. Next, rinse the machine twice with 6 cups of water. ■■ Clean the jug thoroughly.

1. Remove the water tank, fill with water and reinsert up to the stop. 2. Swivel out the filter housing. 3. Insert a 1x4 filter paper in the filter holder and fill with the amount of coffee required. 4. Swivel the filter housing back and click it into place. 5. Position the jug, with its lid closed, under the filter housing. 6. Press button a, and the brewing process starts. Important: When the brewing process is complete, wait a moment until all the coffee has run through the filter and into the jug. Let the machine cool down for five minutes before brewing a fresh pot.

This coffee machine has a special aroma programme, which can be switched on and off with the aroma button. If the aroma programme is activated, the coffee is brewed for longer, so altering the taste of the coffee. ■■ Press aroma button ã to switch on within 1 minute after brewing starts. The button lights up red. Important: The aroma button has a memory function and also remains activated after switch-off of the appliance. The aroma button can only be switched on or off within the first minute after brewing starts.

The appliance has an automatic auto off (power save) function, which switches it off after a period of about 40 minutes after the end of brewing. This time can be adjusted: ■■ The appliance must be switched off and the mains plug inserted in the socket. ■■ Press and hold down button ã for at least 3 seconds. Button a flashes. ■■ To make a selection, press button a within 7 seconds.

Setting the water hardness

The ­water hardness can be selected for this coffee machine.

It is important to set the water hardness correctly so the appliance will accurately indicate when the descaling programme should be run.

The preset water hardness is “hard”. This can be adjusted: ■■ The appliance must be switched off and the mains plug inserted in the socket. ■■ Press and hold down buttons a and ã simultaneously for at least 3 seconds. Button a flashes. ■■ To make a selection, press button a within 7 seconds.

Important: Do not keep dairy products or baby food warm: formation of bacteria. Do not heat the jug in the microwave or oven. Do not keep or transport carbonated drinks in the jug. Rinse carefully after cleaning. The seal is not hermetically tight to prevent adherence through a suction effect. For this reason the thermos jug should never be transported in a horizontal position, or coffee might leak out. The thermos jug has a capacity of around 8 cups. Note: The bottom of the thermos jug and the area underneath it on the coffee machine can become very hot. This does not indicate that the appliance is defective.

Store ground coffee in a cool place. You can also freeze it.

Once a pack of coffee has been opened, always close tightly to maintain its aroma. How the coffee beans are roasted affects their taste and aroma. Darker roast = more flavour Lighter roast = more acidity

Do not steam-clean the appliance. Unplug the appliance before cleaning it. ■■ Clean all parts that came into contact with coffee after each use. ■■ Clean the outside of the housing with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh or ­abrasive cleaning agents. 12

■■ Clean the water tank under running water. Don’t use a hard brush.

Only model with glass jug TKA6A.4. ■■ The glass jug and lid are dishwash­ er-safe. Only model with thermos jug TKA6A.8. ■■ Rinse out the thermos jug and lid and wipe the outside clean with a damp cloth. Do not put in the dishwasher or washing-up water. Tip: Stubborn stains can be removed with a solution of baking soda, dish­ washer granulate or denture tablets. ■■ Do not store the thermos jug closed to prevent odours and the formation of bacteria.

This appliance is equipped with an auto­ matic descaling indicator. If button a lights up orange after the end of brewing, the appliance must be descaled.

Regular descaling ■■ prolongs the life of the appliance; ■■ ensures that it functions properly; ■■ prevents excessive steam; ■■ speeds up the brewing process; ■■ saves energy. The coffee machine should be descaled with a commercial descaling agent. ■■ The appliance must be switched off and the mains plug inserted in the socket. ■■ Place the jug in the coffee machine with the lid closed. ■■ Measure out descaler in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (take note of safety information) and add to the water tank. Do not use descaling agent with phosphoric acid. Caution: Do not fill with more than 6 cups of liquid. ■■ Press and hold down button a for at least 5 seconds. The descaling process starts.

■■ The programme will stop several times for a few minutes to let the descaler take effect. The descaling process lasts for approximately 30 minutes. While the programme is running, button a flashes orange.

■■ When the descaling process is ­complete, button a is no longer lit up. ■■ Operate the appliance twice using clean water, without coffee. Do not fill with more than 6 cups of water. ■■ Carefully rinse all loose components and the jug.

Rectifying minor faults yourself

Button a flashes red, and brewing does not start.

ÆÆThe appliance is still too warm. ■■ The appliance will start brewing ­automatically once it has cooled down. The machine takes noticeably longer or switches itself off before the brewing process is complete. ÆÆHeavy build-up of limescale in the appliance. ■■ Descale the appliance according to the instructions. Tip: With very hard water descale the appliance more frequently than indicated (button a lights up orange) and set the water hardness to “hard”.
