How to take a correct blood pressure measurement?

Attach the monitor to the narrow part of your bare forearm, cuff well tightened. Sit down, relax, do not talk or move. Press the start/stop button. Follow the arrows of the position indicator to place the wrist at heart level. The measurement starts automatically.

What do the displayed error codes mean (e.g., 64, 81, 01)?

Codes greater than 64 (e.g., 64) indicate that the cuff is too loose or incorrectly installed. Codes less than 64 (e.g., 81) signal a system error. Code 01 indicates an incorrect measurement position. Refer to the full manual for detailed solutions.

How to view the measurements stored in memory?

Turn off the device, then press the memory button 'mem'. The last measurement is displayed. Press several times to scroll through the last 30 measurements. The number at the top left indicates the order (0 = oldest, 29 = newest).

Can I disable the position indicator?

Yes. Turn off the device, press the selection button (D) for 2 seconds. The flashing symbol appears. Press I/O to switch from 'on' to '--'. Confirm with the memory button. To reactivate, repeat the operation.

What to do if the batteries are low?

The low battery symbol appears (flashing or steady). If flashing, measurements are still possible but replace the batteries soon with two LR03 (AAA) alkaline batteries. If steady, measurement is impossible; replace the batteries immediately.

How to clean and maintain the blood pressure monitor?

Clean the housing with a soft, damp cloth. The cuff can be cleaned with a damp cloth, but do not wash it with water or dry clean. Do not expose the device to direct sunlight or extreme humidity.

Does the blood pressure monitor require calibration?

The product is calibrated at the factory. If used according to the instructions, no recalibration is necessary. In case of doubt about accuracy, contact Braun Customer Service.

What are the contraindications for use?

People suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, vascular constriction, atherosclerosis, diabetes, or wearing a pacemaker should consult a doctor before use. The device is intended for domestic use only.

Why do successive measurements differ?

Blood pressure varies naturally. Variations of 10 to 20 mmHg are normal. Make sure to measure at the same time, under the same conditions, and wait 3 minutes between measurements.

How to use rechargeable batteries?

Use LR03 (AAA) rechargeable batteries. The low battery symbol may appear earlier than with alkaline batteries, but this does not affect accuracy. Replace them when necessary.

What you should know about blood pressure

Blood pressure constantly changes throughout the day. It rises sharply in the early morning and declines during the late morning. Blood pressure rises again in the afternoon and finally drops to a low level at night. Also, it may vary in a short period of time. Therefore, readings from successive measurements can fluctuate.

Blood pressure readings from a healthy 31 year old male, measured at 5 minute intervals

Blood pressure measured in a doctor's office only provides a momentary value. Repeated measurements at home better reflect one's actual blood pressure values under everyday conditions.

Moreover, many people have a different blood pressure when they measure at home, because they tend to be more relaxed than when in the doctor's office.

Regular blood pressure measurements taken at home can provide your doctor with valuable information on your normal blood pressure values and pulse.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set up the following standard blood pressure values when measured at resting pulse.

What you should know about this blood pressure monitor

For accurate measurements, all wrist blood pressure monitors must be positioned at heart level.

Example: If the monitor is positioned 20cm below heart level as shown on the left (e.g. by putting the arm on a table), the reading you will obtain is approximately 15mmHg too high.

Therefore, the Braun SensorControl has a unique active positioning system: The position sensor arrows on the display guide you to hold your measuring arm in the right position at heart level.

Inserting batteries

• Use alkaline batteries, type LR 03 (AAA) (e.g. Duracell Ultra) as supplied with this product or rechargeable batteries.
• Remove the battery compartment cover (F) and insert two batteries with correct polarity (see symbol in the battery compartment (E)).
• New batteries (Duracell Ultra) will provide approximately 300 measurements.
• Only discard empty batteries. They should not be disposed of in the household waste, but at appropriate collection sites or at your dealer.

Use of rechargeable batteries

In case rechargeable batteries are used, please note that the "battery low" symbol may appear earlier on the display than with alkaline batteries. However, this will not affect the measuring accuracy.

Key rules for accurate blood pressure measurements

• Always take readings at the same time of day, ideally in the morning, under the same conditions.
• Do not measure within 30 minutes after smoking, coffee or tea consumption.
  Take off wrist watch and jewellery before fitting the appliance on the measuring arm.
  While taking a measurement, sit down, relax, keep still, especially the hand of the measuring arm, do not move or speak.
• Hold the appliance at heart level.
• Wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating a measurement.

Measuring

For a reliable blood pressure measurement, make sure that you hold the appliance at heart level. The position sensor arrows on the display will guide you to hold your arm in the right position at heart level.

1. Fasten the appliance on the slim side of your bare forearm.

Make sure that the cuff fits tight.

1. Press the red I/0 (on/off) button (C).

1. Put the arm with the appliance on the other upper arm as shown. Slowly move the hand upward along the upper arm.

Move your hand up or down according to the direction of the arrow shown.

1. When you have reached the right measuring position, the display shows a heart symbol and a beep will sound. The measurement will start automatically.

When the measurement is complete, a beep will sound again, and the reading is displayed:

Please note:

15 seconds after switching on the appliance, the measuring process will start automatically, even if the appropriate measuring position has not been reached.

If at any time, you want to discontinue the measurement, press the I/O button.

Turning off the product

Press the I/O button (C) to turn the product off. Otherwise the product will turn off automatically after 2 minutes.

Memory function

Your blood pressure monitor stores the readings of the last 30 measurements. Storing is done automatically without having to press the memory button after a measurement. The memory cannot be cleared. Once the memory is full, the oldest values will be overwritten.

Recalling stored readings

To recall stored readings, first turn the product off, then press the memory button («mem») (B).

The latest reading will be displayed. The number in the upper left corner of the display indicates the memory position (0 being the oldest, 29 the most recent).

Repeatedly pressing the memory button will call up one by one all stored readings.

Position sensor

By means of the «select» button (D) placed underneath the battery compartment cover, you can de-activate the position sensor (e.g. if you want to measure while lying down).

Proceed as follows:

• First turn off the product. Press the «select» button for 2 seconds.
• The position sensor symbol (flashing) will be displayed next to «on».
• Press the I/O button to change the setting from «on» (position sensor activated) to «--» (position sensor deactivated).
• To confirm the change of setting, press the memory button.

Please note:

Unless you confirm a modified setting by pressing the I/O button, the appliance will turn off automatically after 2 minutes without adapting the modified setting.

Storage and cleaning

Clean the product with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Stains on the cuff (G) can be carefully removed with damp cloth. Do not wash or dry clean the cuff. Do not store the product in a place exposed to direct sunlight or high humidity.

Calibration

This product has been calibrated at the time of manufacture. If used according to the use instructions, periodic recalibration is not required.

If at any time, you question the measuring accuracy, please contact a Braun Service Centre.

Manufacturing date is given by the LOT number on the back of the product. The first number after LOT represents the last digit of the year of manufacture. The next three digits give the day of the year of manufacture.

An example: LOT 2116 xx xx - this product has been manufactured on the 116th day of the year 2002.
