How to replace the saw blade on the AEG ST 400?

Unplug the machine. Push the transparent cover down. Loosen the locking screw about 2 turns with the hex key located under the base plate. Place the blade in the slot of the support roller and insert it completely into the slide until it stops. The blade shoulders must touch the collar. Tighten the screw. Check the positioning with protective gloves.

How to tilt the base plate for a bevel cut?

Unplug the machine. Loosen the base plate adjustment screw. Disengage the base plate from the notch, then engage it at the desired angle (15°, 30°, or 45°). Tighten the screw. The angle is read on the dial. For other angles, adjust outside the notches. Make a test cut before the final cut.

Can I adjust the cutting speed or pendulum action?

No, the ST 400 model has a fixed speed of 3000 strokes per minute and does not have pendulum adjustment. These functions are available on the STEP 420, STEP 450, SPE 70 and SPE 80 A models.

How to connect a vacuum cleaner to the saw?

The integrated extraction channel has a diameter of 30 mm. Use a suitable extraction hose (e.g., AEG reference 4932 3304 12). Insert the hose into the channel by turning. Push the transparent cover down to optimize extraction.

What materials can I cut with the AEG ST 400?

Wood (up to 50 mm), softwood (60 mm), steel (3 mm), aluminum (10 mm), plastics and rubber. Use blades suitable for each material.

How to make a plunge cut?

Set the pendulum action to 0 (if available). Place the front edge of the base plate on the cutting point (machine off and unplugged). Plug in and carefully insert the blade into the material. Plunge cutting is only possible in soft materials like wood. For metals, drill a pilot hole.

What are the important safety instructions?

Always wear safety goggles. Use a dust mask and gloves. Unplug the machine before any blade change or adjustment. Never remove chips while the saw is running. Make sure the power cable is at the back of the machine. Use a residual current circuit breaker for outdoor outlets.

How to maintain the AEG ST 400?

Dust that arises when working on material containing asbestos or stonework containing crystalline silicic acid is harmful to the health. Please follow accident prevention regulations. Appliances used at many different locations including open air must be connected via a current surge preventing switch. Always use the protective shields on the machine. Always disconnect the plug from the socket before carrying out any work on the machine. Always wear goggles when using the machine. It is recommended to wear gloves, sturdy non slipping shoes and apron. Sawdust and splinters must not be removed while the machine is running. Do not pierce the motor housing as this could damage the double insulation (use adhesives). Keep mains lead clear from working range of the machine. Always lead the cable away behind you. Only plug-in when machine is switched off. Dust that arises when working on wood or using the tool on industrial material can be dangerous to health. In this case connect the tool to a suitable suction device. Do not use cracked or distorted saw blades.

Mains connection

Connect only to a single-phase AC current supply and only to the mains voltage specified on the rating plate. Connection to sockets without earth protection is possible as the appliance features protective insulation to DIN 57 740/ VDE 0740 and CEE 20. Radio suppression complies with the European standard EN 55014.

When fitting the plug, make sure that the brown (live) wire of this appliance is connected to the plug terminal marked L or coloured red, and the blue (neutral) wire of this appliance is connected to the plug terminal marked N or coloured black. Under no circumstances must the wires of this appliance be connected to the earth terminal of the plug marked either E, with the earth symbol or coloured green or green/yellow.

Brief description

The sawdust blower removes sawdust ahead of the cut - very practical when sawing along a line.

The stroke-rate (= movements per minute of the saw blade) can be infinitely varied by means of the adjustment wheel.(not for ST 400, ST 440)

Transparent cover for optimum sawdust removal.

The anti-splintering device almost entirely prevents the edge of the wood from splintering. (Accessory*)

The base plate can be tilted to both sides by 45^ for bevel cuts.

The vibration damper permits quieter running by means of a counterweight on the plunger.

The on-off switch is shaped in such a way that it can be used from the forward or the rear holding position.

The on-off switch can be fixed in the "On"- position for continuous operation by means of the locking button.

The built-in pendulum stroke improves the cutting performance. The pendulum stroke of the saw blade means it is only pressed against the material on the reverse stroke (working stroke) and lifted off the material on the forward stroke.

Result: better extraction of sawdust, lower friction higher cutting performance.

The pendulum stroke can be adjusted by the pendulum stroke control and thus adapted to different kinds of material. (not for ST 400, ST 440)
