How to descale my Philips HD4600 kettle?

To descale your kettle, fill it halfway with a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:2), bring to a boil, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. You can also use citric acid according to the manufacturer's instructions.

What to do if the kettle does not turn on?

Check that the base is properly plugged in and that the kettle is placed correctly on its base. Make sure the lid is closed. If the problem persists, contact Philips customer service.

Can I boil less water than the minimum capacity?

It is not recommended to boil less than 0.5 liters to avoid overheating. The minimum level is usually indicated on the water level window.

How to clean the descaling filter?

The descaling filter is removed by pushing it out through the spout. Wash it under running water with a soft brush. Replace it after drying.

The kettle stops before boiling, why?

This may be due to excess limescale. Descale the kettle. Also check that the lid is properly closed and the base is stable.

What is the power of the HD4600 kettle?

The power is 2200 W, allowing rapid boiling of water.

Can I heat milk or other liquids?

No, this kettle is designed only for heating water. Other liquids may damage the appliance or cause overflow.

How to prevent limescale deposits?

Use filtered water if possible and descale regularly (every 1-2 months depending on water hardness). Do not leave stagnant water in the kettle.

The power cord is too short, what to do?

The cord is 75 cm. If you need more length, use an extension cord suitable for the power (at least 10 A).

Please note:

Except where specific references are made, these instructions apply to both the Corded Kettle type HD 4600 and the Cordless Kettle type HD 4601.

Important

• Read these instructions carefully in conjunction with the illustrations before using the appliance for the first time. Keep these instructions for future reference.
• Before connecting the kettle, check if the voltage indicated on the underside of the appliance corresponds with the mains voltage in your home.
  If this is not the case, contact your dealer and do not use the kettle.
• Connect the appliance to an earthed wall socket only.
• The kettle will switch off automatically when the water is boiling. You can switch the kettle off before boiling manually using the on/off switch.
• After the kettle has switched off automatically (or has been switched off manually) it will need some time to cool down. After 15-20 secs. the kettle can be switched on again.
• The kettle is protected against damage due to operation with insufficient water by means of a safety cut-out. This cuts off the power when the heating element gets too hot.
  If the kettle ever runs dry while operating, first unplug (type HD 4600) or remove the kettle from the base unit (type HD 4601).
  Then allow to cool down for 15 minutes before refilling with cold water. The safety cut-out will automatically reset.
• Place the appliance on a stable flat surface.
  Do not place it on a hot surface.
• Ensure that the base unit and/or the kettle cannot fall into water and that no water can be splashed onto the appliance.
• Never immerse the appliance in water. Do not allow water to penetrate the electrical parts inside the kettle or the base unit.
• Ensure that the drain holes in the underside of the kettle do not become blocked.
• If the kettle is tipped too far backwards, water may be spilt through the rear cover. If this happens the kettle will still be electrically safe. Extra care must be taken if the kettle contains hot or boiling water.
• WARNING: If the kettle is overfilled there is a risk that boiling water may be ejected from the spout.
• Prevent children from pulling the mains cord or knocking the kettle over.
• The appliance may be cleaned with a damp cloth. First remove the mains plug from the wall socket.
• Do not touch the metal parts of the kettle if hot.
• Pour away the very first water boiled with this kettle. The appliance is then ready for use.

Type HD 4600:

- If the supply cordset is damaged the replacement cord, appliance plug and mains plug must be rated at 10 A / 250 V.

Type HD 4601:

- Use the kettle only with the supplied base unit. Do not use the base unit for other purposes.

- If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must only be replaced by Philips or their service representative, as special tools and/or parts are required.

How to use the kettle

Filling

• (Cordless kettle type HD 4601:) Remove the kettle from the base unit before filling. (Corded kettle type HD 4600:) First fill the kettle. Then plug in.
• (Fig. 2a) You can fill the kettle via the spout or...
• (Fig. 2b) ...after opening the lid. (Do not forget to close the lid after filling!)

Do not fill with less than 0.2 litre of water to prevent the kettle running dry while operating. Do not fill with more than 1.7 litres of water (up to "MAX" indication). Avoid overfilling to prevent boiling water being ejected via the spout.

Switching on

• (Fig. 3a) (Cordless kettle type HD 4601:) Place the kettle on the base unit, which is connected to a wall socket. (You can keep the base unit connected.) The pivot type mains connector in the centre of the base allows you to place the kettle in any convenient position.
• (Fig. 3b) (Corded kettle type HD 4600:) Insert the appliance plug (F) firmly into the connector (E). Then insert the mains plug into a wall socket.
• (Fig. 4) The appliance is switched on using the on/off switch. The pilot lights will come on.

Switching off

• (Fig. 5a) The water is boiled and the appliance has switched off automatically.
• (Fig. 5b) You can at any time switch the kettle off manually.

Switching on again?

- You can switch the kettle on again, after allowing the built-in thermal safety switch enough time to cool down.

If the on/off switch is still (automatically) blocked in the "OFF" position, do not force it into the "down" ("ON") position as this may damage the operating mechanism.

Cleaning

• Disconnect the appliance from the mains before cleaning.
• Do not immerse the kettle or base in water.
• The appliance can be cleaned by simply wiping with a cloth moistened with soapy water.
  Use a dry and soft lintfree cloth to refurbish the stainless steel mantle.
• Do not use abrasive cleaners, scourers, etc.
  • Take care to keep water away from the mains lead and sockets.

Filterline scale filter

To prevent loose particles of limescale being poured out into your beverage, your kettle is fitted with a scale filter.

The filter is removable to enable cleaning and replacement.

Limescale deposits

Limescale is a harmless deposit which is naturally formed when (more or less) hard water is heated.

The amount of limescale deposited (and subsequently the need to clean or descale) largely depends on the water hardness in your area and the frequency with which the kettle is used.

Limescale is not harmful to your health. But if poured into your beverage it can give a powdery taste to your drink.

The scale filter is designed to prevent these scale particles from being poured out by trapping them within the kettle.

Cleaning the scale filter

To avoid an excessive amount of limescale building up inside your kettle, it is important that both the kettle and filter are cleaned on a regular basis.

Scale can be removed from the filter by

• running it under a tap, whilst gently brushing with a soft nylon brush (fig. 6);

• or by soaking the filter in vinegar or a proprietary descaling agent.

• Before removing the filter (for replacement or cleaning):

• Ensure that the kettle is unplugged from the mains.
• Do not attempt to remove the filter when hot or when the kettle contains hot water.
• Never leave the filter loose inside the kettle. Ensure that the filter is always correctly placed between the two ribs.
• Slide the filter downwards until it clicks into position (fig. 7).

Periodically: descale the filter

In the course of time, a build-up of limescale may occur in the filter gauze, reducing the filling (via the spout) and pouring performance of the kettle. Limescale adhered to the bottom will reduce the heating capacity.

Therefore, the kettle with the filter in place, should be descaled periodically as indicated in section "Descaling the kettle".

Replacement filters

Replacement filters can be obtained under type nr. HD 4963 from your Philips dealer.

Descaling the kettle

Descale the kettle regularly. With normal use: at least twice a year.

• Boil 700 ml of water in the kettle.
• Switch off and unplug from the electrical supply.
• Add 300 ml of ordinary vinegar to the water in the kettle.
• Leave the solution to stand in the kettle overnight.
• Empty out the solution into e.g. a jug. Rinse the inside of the kettle with clean water.
• Fill the kettle with clean water up to the "MAX" level.
• Boil the water and empty the kettle. Rinse the inside of the kettle with clean water.

If any scale remains:

• Pour the water & vinegar solution into the kettle again.
• Reheat the solution until it starts to fizz again. Then switch off and unplug from the electrical supply. Do not boil.
• Leave the hot solution in the kettle until the fizzing stops.
• Empty out the solution into e.g. a jug and rinse the inside of the kettle thoroughly.
• Fill the kettle with clean water up to the "MAX" level.
• Boil the water and empty the kettle. Rinse the inside of the kettle with clean water.

For U.K. only:

Fitting a different plug

This appliance is fitted with a BS 1363 13 Amp. plug. Should you need to replace the plug, connect the wires as follows:

Green/yellow wire to the Earth terminal ( ± ) of the new plug.

Brown wire to the Live (L) terminal of the new plug.

Blue wire to the Neutral (N) terminal of the new plug.

Always fit the same value of fuse as that originally supplied with your appliance. Only use BS 1362 approved fuses. As a guide only: Appliances under 700 W can have a 3 Amp. fuse (red) and all others should have a 13 Amp. fuse (brown).

When disposing of an old plug (particularly the moulded type which has been cut from the mains cord) always remove the fuse as the plug could be dangerous if ever inserted in a live socket.
