6. OPERATION

6.1. CONNECTION AND CONFIGURATION

With the MATAMP-2240 switched off, connect the rear IEC socket to the mains using the mains cable supplied (or equivalent approved type). Ensure that the voltage is correct and that the speaker connections are correct, then switch on the power.

The AM-2 amplifier has 5 input channels and an integrated multi-source audio player.

Mic inputs 1, 2 and 3 are designed for microphones or line-level sources (such as a CD/MP3 player or mixer output) via combined connectors on the rear panel, and are DIP-switchable. They can accept XLR or 6.3 mm plugs for balanced or unbalanced signals.

6.2. DIP SWITCHES

Mic/Line inputs 1, 2 and 3 each have 2 DIP switches on the rear panel for adjusting input level and/or activating +48V phantom power for use with condenser microphones.

Set the level correctly according to the type of input source connected (microphone or line).

If the source connected is a condenser microphone that requires phantom power, make sure that phantom power is activated for this channel.

Be sure to make these DIP switch settings with the amplifi er switched off. If you make changes when the amplifi er is switched on, you risk causing loud bangs in the system and damage to the loudspeakers.

6.3. PRIORITY AND EMERGENCY ACTIVATION

  1. Mute input, open circuit to activate the highest priority mute and closed circuit to return the amplifier to its normal operating state.
  2. EMC input - this is the secondary priority EMC audio input.
  3. Mic1 input
  4. Compatible call microphone desk

6.4. SIGNAL INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

Connect microphones or line signals to Mic/Line inputs 1, 2 and 3 using good quality signal cables. A stereo or mono line level source can be connected to the Auxiliary Channel 4 input on 2 RCA connectors.

To check the output of any zone, an assignable monitor output can be connected to headphones from the 6.3 mm socket on the front panel or as a line output (e.g. to active speakers) from the RCA connectors at the rear.

Each zone output has a dedicated RCA signal output on the rear panel, which can be connected to the line inputs of active speakers or amplifiers. These outputs are in addition to the speaker outputs detailed below.

An aerial input is provided on the rear panel for connection to an external aerial for DAB+/FM tuning.

The rear panel features bass and treble volume controls for adjusting the sound of the MIC and Line input signals.

The MATAMP-2240 has separate speaker outputs for each zone, connected via large modular terminal plugs. Each plug can be removed from the rear panel for convenient connection of 2-zone speaker outputs.

Each zone output can be used to power either 100V line array loudspeakers or standard low impedance loudspeakers. These two configurations cannot be used together, so it is important to decide which will be used initially.

6.5. 100V LINE SYSTEMS

For 100V loudspeakers, connect the output of the selected zone to the first loudspeaker in the zone using a double-insulated loudspeaker wire with a current rating sufficient to support the total output of the amplifier.

Connect the "100V" output terminal of the selected zone to the positive (+) connection of the speaker and the "COM" output to the negative (-) connection of the speaker. Connect the other speakers in parallel with the first speaker, with all positive terminals connected together and all negative terminals connected together, as shown below.

Artsound MATAMP-2240 - 100V LINE SYSTEMS - 1

text_image 100V 4Ω 8Ω COM 5W 5W 5W 5W 5W (FIG. 3)

A 100V line array loudspeaker system may include many loudspeakers connected together. The determining factor in how many loudspeakers can be used on a single amplifi er is the power rating. In most cases, it is advisable to connect as many speakers as necessary with a combined power rating of no more than 80% of the amplifi er's rated output power. The terminals of a 100V loudspeaker are connected via a transformer and, if required, this transformer can be 'tapped' for different power ratings. These taps can be used to adjust the power (and output volume) of each speaker in a zone to achieve the ideal total system power for that zone's output.

6.6. LOW IMPEDANCE SYSTEMS

Alternatively, each zone output of the amplifier is capable of driving one or more low impedance loudspeakers. There is an option on each zone for either 8-16Ω speaker output to determine the minimum impedance. It is essential to select the correct output terminal when opting for low impedance speakers.

For a single 8Ω speaker, connect the positive (+" 8-16Ω) wire to the (+) speaker terminal and the negative (-) speaker wire to the "COM" amplifier terminals.

In both cases, the connected load must have a combined impedance no lower than that indicated on the terminal.

A lower impedance may cause irreparable damage to the amplifier.

The connected loudspeaker(s) must also have a power capacity to accept a load up to RMS of the zone output.

A lower power rating may damage the speakers.

6.7. MEANING OF LED DISPLAY

[fi g 1, zone 1 & 2 display]

• C1-MP3 Module • C2-MIC1/Line1
• C3-MIC2/Line2 • C4-MIC3/Line3
• C5-AUX • C6-EMC

How it works

When all the connections to the amplifier have been made, turn down all the rotary controls and switch the unit on and the power LED lights up.

To check that the system is working correctly, select an input source and an output zone to test. In the following example, Mic/Line 1 input and Zone 1 output have been selected.

  • Press the Z1 button on the MIC/Line1 line. If zone1 displays C2, this means that the MIC/Line1 output is intended for zone 1.
  • If you are playing MP3, press the Z1 button on the MP3 line, zone 1 will receive MP3 music and the zone 1 screen will display C1.
  • If Zone 1 is not audible from the MATAMP-2240 location, use the Monitor function as follows Press the Monitor button and connect headphones to the Monitor output.
  • Ensure that the Monitor button for Mic/Line 1 is pressed and listen through the headphones.
  • Gradually increase the level of the Monitor control and check the output to zone 1.
