Frequently Asked Questions - TB 401 Alpha Tools

How to adjust the rotation speed on the TB 401 drill press?
Open the V-belt cover (45), loosen the thumbscrew (21) and move the motor towards the spindle. Move the belt to the pulley corresponding to the desired speed (see speed table fig. 4). Tension the belt by pushing the motor back, then retighten the screw. Close the cover. Caution: the cover must be closed for the machine to operate.
How to adjust the drilling depth?
Using the handle (16), lower the drill bit until it touches the workpiece. Set the desired depth by turning the adjustment nut (39) and the pointer (40) on the scale. Remember to account for the length of the drill point for a cylindrical bore.
How to tilt the drill table?
Unscrew the hexagon screw (9), turn the table (7) to the desired angle (readable on the support scale), then retighten the screw. The table can be tilted 90° to the left and right.
How to adjust the table height?
Loosen the clamping screw (6), lift or lower the table (7) by turning it slightly to slide it on the column, then retighten the screw. Adjust the table so that the workpiece can pass under the drill bit.
How to mount the drill press on a table?
Place the base plate (1) on a stable surface, screw the column (4) and the bracket (2) with screws (3). Slide the table bracket (8) onto the column, then the machine head (19). Secure the head with the two set screws (20). Screw the handles (16) onto the feed shaft. Fit the chuck (10) onto the spindle cone after cleaning.
What is the maximum drilling diameter?
The maximum drilling diameter is 13 mm. The maximum drilling depth is 52 mm.
How to maintain the TB 401 drill press?
The machine requires no special lubrication (lifetime lubricated ball bearings). Apply a drop of acid-free lubricant to moving parts and threads. Clean with a brush, cloth, or paintbrush (no detergent). Treat bare parts with an anti-corrosion agent regularly.
How to change the drill bit?
Use the provided chuck key to loosen the gear chuck. Insert the new drill bit and tighten firmly. Remember to remove the key after use. To access the chuck, raise the chip guard.
What is the power and speed range?
The motor has a power of 350 Watt (S2 10 min duty). Five speeds are available: 640, 1020, 1460, 1980 and 2890 min⁻¹, adjustable via V-belt.
How to order spare parts?
To order, specify the device type (TB 401), the article number, the identification number and the spare part number. Contact your dealer or after-sales service (see contact list in the manual). 5-year warranty.

3. Proper use

The TB 401 is a Bench drill with V-belt drive for twelve different speed settings. Holes of up to 13 mm diameter can be drilled in vertical direction.

To use the Bench drill properly you must observe the operating, maintenance and repair instructions as well as the safety regulations found in this manual.

The TB 401 is to be used only by persons who are acquainted with the machine. All the pertinent accident prevention regulations are to be observed.

Unauthorized modifications to the machine release the manufacturer from all liability for any damage caused as the result.

All work and uses which are not listed require written approval from ISC GmbH.

To maintain your rights under the warranty and in the interest of product safety, please observe the safety regulations.

For design reasons it is impossible to eliminate all residual risks, namely:

  1. Reaching into the chuck and drill when in use
  2. Cutting yourself on sharp drill bits
  3. Chips being flung out during drilling
  4. Clothes becoming caught up in the machine

4. Safety regulations

● Wear safety items when drilling.
● Always keep long hair suitably covered.
Caution! Long hair gets caught easily in rotating tools.
● Always clamp workpieces with suitable additional
tools.
- Check the clamping action of the chuck regularly.
- Use only suitable additional tools to extract the drilling chips.
Caution: Never remove chips with your hand.
● Never make adjustments or perform any other operations on the machine when it is running.
● Always use the supplied chuck key to open and close the scroll chuck.
Caution: Always remove the chuck key after use.
● The use of the machine is governed by VDE guidelines, DIN guidelines and the accident prevention regulations published by professional associations.

6. Before starting

● The machine has to be set up where it stands firmly, i.e. bolted to a workbench or similar. There are two fixing holes (a) in the base plate for this purpose.
- Screws for securing the machine in position are not supplied. Caution: Do not overtighten the fixing screws of the base plate may fracture.
- Before you connect the machine to a socket-outlet, check that the data on the rating plate are the same as those of your power supply.

7 Assembly

7.1 Assembling the pillar and the machine head (Fig. 1)

The parts numbers used below correspond to the item numbers in the list of replacement parts and in the exploded drawing and Fig. 1. Remove grease and oil residues from all the parts before assembling.

  1. Place the base plate (1) on a flat surface.
  2. Use the supplied screws (3) to fasten the pillar (4) and holder (2) to the base plate (1).
  3. Slide the table holder (8) together with the table (7) over the pillar (4).
  4. Mount the machine head (19) on the pillar (4).
  5. Use the two grub screws (20) to fasten the machine head (19) to the pillar.
  6. Screw the three handles (16) in the feed shaft 815).
  7. Plug the chuck (10) on the taper of the spindle (13). Important: Carefully remove all oil and grease residues from the taper of the chuck and spindle.

7.2 Chip guard (Fig. 2)

● Slacken the clamping screw (d).
- Push the clamping flange (c) over the drilling spindle.
● Align the guard with the transparent disk at the front
● The chip guard can be infinitely adjusted in height using the two thumb screws (f).
● To change the bit the chip guard has to be flipped up out of the way.
- Be sure to flip the chip guard down again before you switch on the drill.

8 Operation (Fig. 3 + 4)

8.1 Setting the speed

Important: The V-belt housing (45) is electrically interlocked, i.e. the V-belt housing has to be closed before you can switch on the Bench drill.

The various speeds are set by moving the V-belt. 1. Switch off the machine.

  1. Open the V-belt housing (45).

  2. Undo the thumb screw (21) and slide the motor (33) toward the spindle.

  3. Move the V-belt to the desired speed setting (see Fig. 4). Important: The V-belt must always run horizontally.

  4. Tension the V-belt, i.e. slide the motor plate (32) together with the motor (33) away from the spindle to the rear.

  5. When the V-belt has the right tension (you can still depress it between the pulleys by approx. 1 cm), use the thumb screw (21) to fix the motor plate (33) in this position.

  6. Close the V-belt housing again.

8.2 Setting the depth (Fig. 5)

The drilling depth can be set exactly using the depth stop and scale on the motor head.

● Use the handle (16) to press the tip of the bit lightly against the top of the workpiece.

- Use the setting nut (39) and the pointer (40) to set the required drilling depth on the scale fitted to the machine housing (19). Important: When setting the drilling depth for a cylindrical hole, allow for the length of the bit tip.

8.3 Tilting the table (Fig. 6)

The table (7) can be tilted to allow you to drill holes at an angle or to drill holes in a workpiece with an inclined bearing surface.

● Undo the hexagon screw (9).
- Turn the table (7) to the required angle of tilt. The angle can be read off the scale on the table holder (5).
● Re-tighten the hexagon screw (9).

GB

8.4 Adjusting the height of the table

● Slacken the tightening screw (6).
- Move the table (7) to the required position by lifting or lowering and turning to the left or right as required.
- Position the table (7) so there is still a big enough gap between the workpiece and the tip of the bit for you to start up the drill in idle.
● Re-tighten the tightening screw (6).

If you want to drill a hole all the way through the workpiece, make sure that the hole in the table (7) is centrally positioned relative to the bit.

When working with large workpieces you can swing the table (7) completely to the side in order to place the workpiece directly on the base plate.
