USER MANUAL k4 Petromax

You can use the Loaf Pan with Lid on a gas stove, in an oven, as well as in the open air on a campfire or a suitable grill. The cast iron, which optimally transfers and stores heat, can be used immediately and is easy to care for thanks to the pre-seasoned surface. SAFETY NOTES Caution! The Petromax Loaf Pan with Lid and its parts (lid, handles) be- comes extremely hot during use. Thus children should never be allowed near the Loaf Pan with Lid. Touch the Loaf Pan with Lid and its parts only with heat-resistant gloves, a cloth or the lid lifter.

  • Do not pour cold liquids (such as water) onto the hot cast-iron Loaf Pan with Lid, for the Loaf Pan with Lid can crack or be otherwise damaged.
  • Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the Loaf Pan with Lid.
  • Do not let the Loaf Pan with Lid fall, for cast iron is a brittle material that can crack.

FIRST USE AND CLEANING

Clean the Loaf Pan and the lid thoroughly with hot water before using it for the first time and dry it well. Thanks to the pre-seasoned surface you can immediately use your sturdy Petromax Loaf Pan after cleaning it, without seasoning it first. Never use dishwashing liquid! We recommend the Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE & STORAGE

As long as you take correct care of your Loaf Pan with Lid, it should last for generations. Thus you must follow a few important basic rules:

  • Let the Loaf Pan with Lid cool down before cleaning it with warm water. Never use dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the Loaf Pan with Lid. It ruins the patina.
  • Use a commercially available dishwashing brush or a sponge (not a metal sponge!) to clean the Loaf Pan with Lid. For stubborn dirt or burnt food residues we also recommend the Petromax Chain Mail Cleaner for cast and wrought iron, which does not damage the patina of your Loaf Pan with Lid even when scrubbing firmly.
  • The Loaf Pan with Lid is not dishwasher-safe.
  • Do not clean the Loaf Pan with Lid with cold water when it is hot. The created tension could crack or otherwise damage the Loaf Pan with Lid.
  • Never stow the Loaf Pan with Lid when it is wet and untreated.
  • Always thoroughly dry up the Loaf Pan with Lid after cleaning it, and apply a thin layer of the Petromax Care and Seasoning Conditioner for cast and wrought iron, before stowing the Loaf Pan with Lid. You can also use a neutral oil or vegetable fat. Do not use olive oil, for it will not reach a temperature as high as other types of fat the next time the Loaf Pan with Lid will be used.
  • Always store the Loaf Pan with Lid in a dry place. In order to let your Loaf Pan with Lid „breathe“, once you have stored it, you can place a piece of cardboard, strong paper or wood between the pot and the lid, thus ensuring good air circulation.6 The table indicates how many briquettes you need for baking. By switching the numbers from the top and the numbers from the bottom, you will know how many briquettes are necessary for simmering soup and stew. By the way: for braising and frying, simply divide the total amount of briquettes by 2. Put the first half of the briquettes on the lid and the other half under the Loaf Pan. It is important to keep in mind that these numbers only serve as a point of reference and can vary according to the type of briquettes that is used, the ambient air temperature and the weather. As a basic rule it is better to start with few briquettes and to add some more if necessary. k4 160 - 180° C 200 - 225° C total (over / under)

(20 / 10) SEASONING The patina (the protective layer of the Loaf Pan with Lid) must be renewed when it is affected. It can happen, for instance, that your Loaf Pan with Lid starts to rust here and there. In that case, proceed as follows:

  • Remove the rust with a wire brush. Clean the Loaf Pan and the Lid with warm water, dishwashing liquid and a dishwashing brush. Then dry it thoroughly up.
  • Coat the whole Loaf Pan and the lid (inner and outer surfaces) with the Petromax Care and Seasoning Conditioner, a neutral oil or vegeta- ble fat. Do not use any olive oil or other types of fat with a lower smoke point, for they burn out to quickly.
  • Then place the Loaf Pan with Lid in a preheated oven at a temperature of approx. 180 °C (356 °F). Let it remain there for 1 to 2 hours and then switch off the oven. Open the oven door halfway and let the Loaf Pan with Lid cool down. Caution! Burning the layer of fat can produce smoke. Therefore we recommend that you do the seasoning outside, for instance on an open fire or on a grill.
  • Grease all the parts again once they have cooled down. Your Loaf Pan with Lid is now seasoned.

COOKING, FRYING, BAKING

You can use the Loaf Pan with Lid in your kitchen oven as well as over an open-air fire or with a suitable barbecue grill. The various heat sources such as barbecue briquettes, charcoal or campfire embers do not necessarily reach the same temperature.

When using at a campfire, you have to try dif- ferent things: Each type of wood creates different embers and burns accordingly more or less quickly. When you place the Loaf Pan with Lid next to the fire, you can cook a few dishes with the heat that emanates from the fire. It is however essential to turn the Loaf Pan with Lid regularly, so that it is evenly heated from all sides. WITH BRIQUETTES High-quality briquettes are easy to use and reliable. They have mostly a similar size and they can store heat for a long time. It is the easiest way for you to regulate the heat for your Loaf Pan with Lid. The amount of briquettes that you need under the Loaf Pan and on the lid also depends on the cooking methods. Here is the basic rule for both sizes:

  • for baking bread and cakes:

/3 under the Loaf Pan This table offers you information on the necessary amount of briquettes depending on which Loaf Pan with Lid you use. In this table you will find the total amount of briquettes and how you should distri- bute them over and under the Loaf Pan in order for your Loaf Pan to reach a certain temperature.7 WARRANTY Under proper use, a warranty period of two years will apply to your Petromax Loaf Pan with Lid from the day of purchase.
