USER MANUAL Kakerlakensuppe Schmidt

Author: Jacques Zeimet Graphics: Rolf Vogt Illustrations: Rolf Vogt Editing: Thorsten Gimmler © 2008: SCHMIDT SPIELE GmbH Players: 2-6 Age: from 6 years Playing time: 10-20 minutes Material 112 vegetable cards (mushrooms, leek, pepperoni, carrots) 16 cockroach slurp cards (with cockroaches, 4 of each type of vegetable) Instructions vegetable cards: cockroach slurp cards:9 Idea and object of the game The players cook a soup as quickly as possible by alternately discarding their vegetable cards. As quickly as they play the cards, they also must describe the relevant vegetable quickly and „proper- ly“ – or slurp at the appropriate places. Whoever is the fi rst to have no cards left in his/her hand has won. Preparation All 128 cards are shuffl ed well and distributed evenly among the pla- yers. Surplus cards are put aside. Each player picks up his/her cards and holds them in hand with as a face-down stack and here we go! Game play The youngest player starts. He puts the topmost card of his hand stack on the table openly and quick as lighting and names the vegetable shown without hesitation: mushrooms, leek, pepperoni or carrots. Playing is clockwise. Everybody takes turns to discard his/her topmost cards onto the discard stack and names „her vegetable“ according to the following rules:10

2. Cockroach slurp card (CSC)

There are four cards of each type of vegetable which in addition show a slurping cockroach. If a player discards a cockroach slurp card, he/she must slurp. From this point on, every card which shows the ve- getable shown on the slurp card invokes the duty to slurp! This means that this vegetable must no longer be named. Look out! The player must not repeat slurping if the relevant vegetable or a new slurp card is discharged. Whenever the last player already slurped, he/she must utter the appreciative sound „mmm“. However, this sound also must not be repeated. Therefore, slurping is followed by

Every player must generally tell the truth, which means the vegetable which is shown on the discarded card must be named correctly! Look out! The vegetable which one sees on the stack, respectively which was just named, must not be told. In this case, the player must always say another vegetable (but must not slurp – see: 2. Cockroach slurp card) Exp.: It may be, for example, that a player discards a mushroom and says leek (since a mushroom is seen on the discard stack, or another player just said mushrooms).11 „mmm“ and „mmm“ is again followed by slurping ... Playing a CSC temporarily closes the discard stack, so that the re- levant slurp card remains visible. The following cards are discarded to a second stack next to it until a new CSC is played. The game then changes back to the fi rst discharge stack. Naturally, slurping is only required for the vegetable on the new cockroach slurp card ... Caution: When stack are changed – for one turn only – two cock- roach slurp cards are visible, hence slurping is required for both kinds of vegetable (if they are different)! Mistakes: Every wrong word, every incorrect sound, any stuttering, each „em“, each „um“, each hesitation of more than three seconds is valued as a mistake! If a player makes a mistake, he/she must pickup all discar- ded cards for his/her stack and he/she starts a new turn. End of the game and the winner Whoever fi rst used up all cards in hand ends and wins the game! Example:

1. Grandpa discards a mushroom and says mushrooms.

2. Matze discards a mushroom and says pepperoni (since mushrooms

must not be repeated).

3. Axel discards a pepperoni and says leek (because pepperoni was

4. Mom discards a carrot cockroach slurp card and slurps.

5. Grandpa changes the discharge stack, discards a carrot and says

mmm (because slurping just happened).

6. Matze discards a mushroom cockroach slurp card and slurps

(because mmm is followed by slurping).

7. Axel again changes the discharge stack, discards a carrot and says

mmm (since the carrot cockroach slurp card is still visible for this turn and slurping just happened).

8. Mom again discards a carrot and says leek (because the carrot

was just discarded and the CSC is visible; pepperoni would also have been correct).

9. Grandpa discards a leek and says pepperoni (because leek was

10. Matze discards a mushroom and says mushrooms. This is wrong
