Frequently Asked Questions - Standard Bilge Pump Rule

What is the intended use of this bilge pump?
This pump is designed for normal bilge water pumping on small boats with hull length ≤ 24 m, in accordance with ISO 15083. It is not intended to handle massive flooding due to hull damage.
Can I use the pump for liquids other than water?
No, the pump is designed only for clear water and salt water. Using hazardous, caustic, or corrosive substances can damage the pump and pose safety risks.
How to properly install the pump?
Installation must be done by a certified electrician in compliance with ABYC H-22 and E-11 standards. Seal all mounting openings with marine-grade sealant and keep bulkhead valves closed during normal operation.
What are the essential safety precautions?
Before any work, disconnect and lock out power. Wear safety equipment (helmet, goggles, gloves). Be aware of the risks of explosion, electrocution, and drowning. Read the manual thoroughly before use.
How to maintain the pump?
Regularly check the pump's operation and remove debris from inlets. Ensure mounting openings remain well sealed. Preventive maintenance helps avoid breakdowns.
What to do if the pump does not work?
First check the power supply and ensure no debris is blocking the inlet. If the problem persists, contact an authorized Xylem representative for assistance.
Can I use the pump to completely empty the bilge?
No, this pump is designed for normal water quantities (spray, rain, leaks, etc.). It cannot handle massive flooding due to a hull breach.
Is the pump suitable for seawater?
Yes, it is compatible with salt water as well as fresh water. It resists marine corrosion but should not be used with other liquids.
What are the associated electrical risks?
The main risks are electrocution and electric arc. Connections must be made by a certified electrician. Always cut power before working on the pump.
How to recycle the pump at end of life?
Comply with local regulations regarding electrical equipment waste. Consult your local electric company for recycling options. Do not dispose of the pump in household trash.
