3. Intended use

The infrared thermometer enables contract-free measurement of surface-temperatures. It determines temperature according to the radiated infrared energy that is emitted by every object. Contact-free measurement makes it ideal for dangerous, difficult to access, moving or live objects. It cannot measure through transparent media such as glass, plastics, water, etc. Instead, the surface temperature is measured at all times. The temperature measuring range is from -50 to +1600 °C. A double laser target device facilitates determination of the measuring range.

Additionally, a contact measurement with a thermal element sensor type K is possible in the measuring range from -50 to +1370 °C, depending on the sensor used. This contact sensor must only be used on voltage-free media.

The installed sensors can be used to measure ambient temperature and relative humidity. These measured values can be used to calculate and display the dew point and the evaporation temperature (wet bulb). There is a mould warning display.

An integrated camera permits recording images and videos with the measured data displayed there. The data can be recorded in the integrated storage or on an optional microSD memory card. A data logger with curve memory is present.

The IR-thermometer as such must not come directly into contact with the measured contact and surface temperature. A sufficient safety distance and the admissible ambience conditions must be complied with under all circumstances.

Diagnostic application in the medical area is not admissible.

The degree of emissions can be adjusted to the present surface property of the measured object. A table of common materials is integrated.

The installed USB interface serves only as a charging interface. Data transmission is not possible.

A 3.7 V Li-ion battery of type 18500 with a connection plug is used for voltage supply. No energy supply other than the one indicated can be used. Charging is performed via the integrated USB charging interface.

The enclosed USB plug-in mains adapter is designed in protection class 2 and must only be used in dry inner rooms.

For safety and approval purposes, you must not rebuild and/or modify this product. If you use the product for purposes other than those described above, the product may be damaged. 7. Product description

a) Function

Infrared thermometers (IR-thermometers) measure the surface temperature of an object. The product sensor records the emitted, reflected and passed-through heat radiation of the object and converts this information into a temperature value.

The degree of emission is a value used to describe the energy emission characteristic of a material. The higher this value, the higher the material's ability to emit radiation. Many organic materials and surfaces have an emission degree of approx. 0.95. Metal surfaces or glossy materials have a lower emission degree. This will cause an inaccurate measurement. For this reason, a matte-black coat of paint or matte adhesive tape should be applied or the emission degree pre-set accordingly.

b) IR-measuring optics - D:S ratio

(D:S = measuring distance:measuring area)

To achieve precise measuring results, the measured object must be larger than the IR measuring spot of the infrared thermometer. The determined temperature is the average temperature of the measured surface. The smaller the measured object, the shorter the distance to the infrared thermometer has to be. The precise measuring spot size can be taken from the following chart. It is also printed on the device. For precise measurements, the measuring object should be at least twice as large as the measuring spot.

The meter has a lens of 50:1. The smallest measuring diameter is reached before the measuring opening at a distance of up to 90 cm. It is 18 mm in diameter. Keep sufficient distance to avoid incorrect measurement due to heating of the IR thermometer. Then the measuring cone expands as shown in the sketch.

Example: The measuring diameter at a distance of 1.8 m is 36 mm.

text_image D:S = 50:1 Ø18 mm D 900 mm 1800 mm 3600 mm S Ø 18 mm 36 mm 72 mm IR measuring area Laser

c) Target laser

The target laser is active during measurement depending on the pre-setting. A warning icon appears in the display with the laser active. Never look into the laser aperture (12) during measurement.

VOLTCRAFT IR1600 CAM - c) Target laser - 1

natural_image Two circular diagrams with internal dotted and solid lines, no text or symbols present

The target laser is designed as a twin device and marks the inner, approximate edge area of the measured area (approx. 90%).

When both laser points meet, the smallest measuring area has been reached. It is 18 mm in diameter.

For large distances, the two laser points move apart according to the measuring area.

9. Measuring

To receive precise measured values, the infrared thermometer must be adjusted to the ambience temperature. Let the device adjust to the new ambience temperature after a site change.

Longer IR measurements of high temperatures at low measuring distances lead to heating of the meters and thus to wrong measurements. For precise measured values: The higher the temperature, the larger should the measuring distance and the shorter the measuring duration be.

Glossy surfaces will falsify the measuring result in the IR measurement. To compensate, the surface of glossy parts can be covered with adhesive tape or matte-black paint. The devices cannot measure through transparent surfaces, such as glass. Instead, it will measure the surface temperature of the glass.

Push and hold the measuring button (9). In the display, the main measured value and all other enabled parameters are displayed. The displayed main measured value corresponds to the average surface temperature of the IR measuring area. During the measurement, the symbol "Start" in the display is concealed and the symbol "Pause" is shown.

The bar display at the lower edge of the screen shows the trend of the current measured value for a quick overview (rising/falling).

After releasing the measuring button (9), the last measured value is displayed until automatic deactivation (can be pre-set) for better reading. The symbol “Pause” goes out and the display “Start” appears to indicate readiness for measurement.

e) Contact measurement

VOLTCRAFT IR1600 CAM - e) Contact measurement - 1

Observe that contact temperature measurement is only permitted with objects that do not turn and are not live. Also observe that contact temperatures are only possible up to the approved sensor temperature. The approved sensor temperature of the enclosed wire sensor is -20 to +250 °C. To use the entire measuring range of the meter, you can purchase optional thermocouple sensors of type K.

The contact measurement is possible in the measuring functions "IR CAM", "IR MEASURE", "DEW POINT" and "DATA LOGGER".

In addition to contact-free IR measurement, a thermocouple contact sensor type K can be connected as well. The contract measurement permits measurement of the temperature independently of the material and degree of emission of the object. In addition to the enclosed wire temperature sensor, all conventional type K thermocouple sensors with miniature plug can also be connected to the devices

Sensor connection

  • Open the lower cover at the meter.
  • Push the thermocouple plug of the sensor into the type K connection socket in the proper polarity (15). Observe the mark “+” at the plug and the socket. The plug only fits the socket in the correct polarity.
  • Once a thermo sensor is connected to the meter with the type K function active, the display "TK" with the temperature of the sensor appears below the IR measured value in measuring operation.
  • Remove the sensor after the end of the measurement and close the cover to prevent ingression of dirt.

The additional functions "MIN", "MAX", "AVG" and "DIF" are not possible for contact measurement. The information always refers to the IR measurement.

f) Dew point

The menu item “DEW POINT” is used for measurement without the camera. This makes it easier to read the measurements because of the homogeneous image background.

Point the measuring opening (13) at the measured object vertically. Observe that the measured object is not smaller than the IR measuring area of the device.

The bar display at the lower edge of the screen shows the correspondence of IR temperature and dew point (DP) in percent for quick overview. It is used as a warning display for possible mould danger.

Blue range: no danger

Yellow range: possible danger

Red range: acute danger

After releasing the measuring button (9), the last measured value is displayed until automatic deactivation (can be pre-set) for better reading. The symbol “Pause” goes out and the display “Start” appears to indicate readiness for measurement.

VOLTCRAFT IR1600 CAM - f) Dew point - 1

The dew point and the evaporation temperature are calculated values that result from the IR surface temperature, the ambient temperature and the relative humidity. The sensors for ambient temperature and relative humidity are installed in the meter (14). Observe the delayed measurement by the constructional placement of the sensors. Give the meter enough time to adjust to the ambient conditions (approx. 30 minutes for a stable measured value).

g) Data logger

The menu item "DATA LOGGER" is used to record the measuring progress.

In data logger mode with internal device memory, only the IR temperature is recoded. When using an optional memory card, all measured values are additionally saved in an editable text file (.txt).

Point the measuring opening (13) at the measured object vertically. Observe that the measured object is not smaller than the IR measuring area of the device.

To start recording, push the measuring button (9) briefly. The recording is started with the pre-set measuring interval. The lock symbol marks the locked permanent measuring mode. The measuring button is locked and the data are stored.

In the display, the main measured value is displayed as a figure. The pre-set high and low alarm levels are always displayed as coloured threshold lines.

To terminate the data logger measurement, push the button "ESC". The measuring function is terminated; the data remain in the device memory. The saved data are saved with time and date designation.

In the menu item "GALLERY", the recorded data can be viewed on the meter.

In the submenu, the following data can be selected with the arrow buttons and the button "Enter":
