Frequently Asked Questions - IPL Pure Skin Pro BEURER

How does IPL intense pulsed light hair removal work?
The device uses selective photothermolysis: the melanin in the hair absorbs the light energy and converts it into heat, which disables hair growth. Only hairs in the growth phase (anagen) respond to treatment.
Is the device effective on blonde, gray or white hair?
No, the device mainly works on dark hair rich in melanin (black, dark brown). Blonde, gray or white hair generally does not respond.
Can I use the device on tanned skin?
No, you must wait at least 2 weeks after sun exposure. Tanned skin contains too much melanin, which increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
What is the recommended frequency of use?
For the body: the first 3-4 sessions every 2 weeks, then sessions 5 to 7 every 4 weeks, then as needed. For the face: 6 sessions every 2 weeks, then 7 to 12 every 4 weeks.
Is the use painful?
Most users feel a slight heat sensation or tingling during the pulse. If uncomfortable, reduce the energy level.
How long does a treatment session last?
A full body treatment (legs, arms, underarms, bikini, face) takes about 20 minutes at the lowest intensity level. The device can be used without time limit.
Can I use the device on the face?
Yes, only for women and only below the cheekbones (upper lip, cheeks, chin, neck). Do not use above the cheekbones or near the eyes. Set the intensity to a maximum of level 2.
What to do if the device does not emit a pulse?
Check that the skin contact sensor is in full contact. If the indicator is orange, increase contact. If it is red, your skin is too dark for the device.
How to maintain the device?
Clean the light surface and the sensor with a dry or slightly damp cloth after each use. Never immerse the device and do not use harsh products.
What are the possible side effects?
Slight redness, itching or heat sensations are normal and disappear quickly. In case of burns, blisters or persistent discoloration, consult a doctor.

2. Introduction

Intended use

The IPL Pure Skin Pro device is intended for the removal of unwanted body hair in both women and men.

The device must only be used on the legs, armpits, bikini line, chest, stomach, back and face below the cheekbones (only suitable for facial use by women).

The device may only be used for the purpose for which it is designed and in the manner specified in the instructions for use. Any improper use can be dangerous. The manufacturer is not liable for damage resulting from improper or careless use.

IPL technology – how it works

The IPL Pure Skin Pro is a light-based device for lasting hair removal for private use. The light-based hair removal process is a well-known and proven method. In 15 years of clinical applications around the world, it has proven to be a safe and effective method for achieving lasting hair reduction.

How does the light remove the hair?

Light-based hair removal is founded on the principle of selective photothermolysis, which uses optical energy to deactivate hair growth. To achieve such a thermal effect, the hair root must selectively absorb the light energy and convert it into heat.

This selectivity is achieved when the optical energy that is released into the tissue is mainly absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair. The high-energy light is converted into thermal energy (heat), which ultimately deactivates hair growth.

What effect does the hair growth cycle have on light-based hair removal?

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - IPL technology – how it works - 1
Anagen - growth phase

Every hair on our body goes through the three phases of the hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen and telogen. Only hairs that are in the anagen phase, or growth phase, respond to treatment with IPL.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - IPL technology – how it works - 2
Catagen – transitional phase

Although the duration of a complete hair growth cycle differs from person to person and depends on the area of the body the hair is growing on, the cycle generally lasts 18 to 24 months.

Please note that at least one complete hair growth cycle is required in order to achieve permanent hair removal using the beurer IPL PureSkinPro.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - WARNING - 1

Note

The device works best on dark hair types or on hair with a high melanin content. Black and dark brown hair shows the best response and, although brown and light brown hair will also respond to the treatment, it usually requires more hair removal sessions. Red hair could produce a reaction. White, grey or blond hair does not usually respond to the device, although some users have noticed results after multiple hair removal sessions.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Do not use the device under any circumstances in the following areas: - 1

This list is not exhaustive.

If you take prescription medicine, are monitored regularly due to an illness and/or are unsure whether the device is safe for you to use, consult your doctor or dermatologist before using the device.

Possible side effects:

If the device is used in accordance with these instructions for use, side effects and complications rarely occur in relation to the use of the device.

  • After treatment, it is possible that the skin will be slightly red, itchy or warm to the touch. These reactions are harmless and will quickly wear off.
  • For a short time, you may experience a skin reaction similar to sunburn on the treated area. If this reaction does not wear off within three days, consult a doctor.
  • Dry or irritated skin may occur as a result of shaving or a combination of shaving and light therapy. This reaction is harmless and will wear off within a few days. If you wish, you can cool the affected area with some ice or a damp cloth.
  • If the skin continues to be too dry, you can apply an unscented moisturising cream 24 hours after treatment.
  • In rare cases, the treated skin can become very red and swollen. This is usually because the intensity level you selected was too high and is more likely to occur in sensitive parts of the body. Reddening and swelling should subside within two to seven days and should be treated by frequent application of ice. Gentle cleaning is OK, but you should avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Discolouration of the skin is very rare and appears as darker or lighter patches on the affected skin area. It can be caused by using an intensity level that is too high for your skin tone. If the discolouration does not subside within two weeks, consult a doctor. Do not treat the discoloured areas again until the discolouration has fully disappeared.
  • In very rare cases, burns or lesions to the skin can occur after the treatment. The burn or lesion may take a few weeks to heal and, in extremely rare cases, you may be left with a scar.
  • In very rare cases, skin infections and inflammations may occur. These may be caused through use of the device on wounds or cuts caused by shaving, or existing wounds or ingrown hairs.
  • Severe pain may occur during or after treatment in the following cases: if you use the device on unshaven skin; if you select an intensity level that is too high for your skin tone; if you treat the same skin area several times with light pulses; if you use the device on open wounds, inflammations, tattoos, burns, etc.
  • In very rare cases, permanent scarring may occur. Scarring usually occurs in the form of a flat, white lesion on the skin. Subsequent aesthetic treatment may be required to improve the appearance of the scar.
  • In very rare cases, using the device can result in a blue/purple haematoma that may last five to ten days. Once the haematoma fades, rusty brown discolouration of the skin (hyperpigmentation) can occur, which may be permanent.

Warning to sunbathers before and after treatment!

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Warning to sunbathers before and after treatment! - 1

  1. Perform a skin sensitivity test on every body part that you would like to treat 48 hours prior to the full treatment.

5.1 Carrying out the skin sensitivity test

  1. Insert the device plug into the device and insert the mains plug into the mains socket. The indicator lamp begins to flash green (stand-by).
  2. Press the ON/OFF/power selection button. On the intensity display, a small light (level 1) begins to illuminate continuously in green.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Carrying out the skin sensitivity test - 1

Note

In the case of facial treatment, the skin sensitivity test should be performed on an area without hair, for example below the ear or on the side of the neck.

  1. Position the light area on the skin and press the trigger button in order to release a light pulse at level 1. Ensure that the light area and skin contact sensor come into full contact with the skin. A light pulse can only be released once the skin contact sensor is in full contact with the skin. You will see a bright flash, hear a cracking noise and may feel a slight burning sensation and/or warmth. The device fan switches on after the first flash. Within 1-3 seconds (depending on the intensity level), the device is ready for the next pulse and the indicator lamp on the device is continuously illuminated green.
  2. Position the skin contact sensor on another treatment area. Increase the intensity level by pressing the ON/OFF/power selection button again and release a light pulse using the trigger button. Do not exceed the maximum permitted/recommended intensity for your skin tone (see the hair and skin colour chart on the back page of these instructions for use).

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Note - 1

Note

Only increase the energy level if the previous level is not uncomfortable for you. If energy level 1 is uncomfortable for you, do not increase the energy level.

  1. If you experience an uncomfortable feeling after the flash, reduce the intensity.
  2. Complete the skin sensitivity test. Wait 48 hours and examine the treated skin area. If the treated skin surface appears normal (no reaction or only slight reddening), you can treat the tested skin areas at the intensity level set for the skin sensitivity test.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Note - 1

Note

If your treated skin surface produces a reaction (e.g. reddening or swelling), wait until the symptoms have fully subsided and then carry out another skin sensitivity test at a lower intensity. If the treated skin surface reacts again, consult your doctor.

6. Starting the application

  1. Insert the device plug into the device and insert the mains plug into the mains socket. The indicator lamp begins to flash green (stand-by).

6.1 Application methods

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Application methods - 1

WARNING

Do not treat the same area twice within one treatment. The risk of side effects is increased if an area is treated more than once.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - WARNING - 1

Note

The pulses from the device should be applied in rows – beginning at one end of each row, continuing to the other end. This technique allows better monitoring of the areas of skin that have already been treated and helps you to avoid treating the same area more than once or treating overlapping areas of skin. The light area of the device is designed in such a way that it leaves a temporary impression on the treated area of skin. These visible impressions can be used for precise placement of the next pulse.

Application method 1 "Auto Flash" mode:

Hold down the trigger button. The device emits a series of consecutive light pulses so long as the skin contact sensor is in full contact with the skin. After the third light pulse, which is triggered by holding down the trigger button, the device automatically switches to “Auto Flash” mode. The device automatically emits light pulses at regular intervals. This mode does not require the trigger button to be pressed manually. The “Auto Flash” mode is suitable for treating large areas in particular, for example the legs.

Application method 2 "releasing individual flashes":

Release the trigger button after each light pulse. For the next light pulse, position the device on the area directly next to the area that has just been treated. Ensure that the light area

and skin contact sensor come into full contact with the skin. This mode guarantees precise treatment, e.g. for knees or ankles.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Application method 2 "releasing individual flashes": - 1

Note

If the device does not emit any light pulses and the indicator lamp is orange, this indicates that there is not enough contact between the skin sensor and the skin.

If the device does not emit any light pulses and the indicator lamp is red, this indicates that the skin surface to be treated is too dark.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Note - 1

Note

Allow the device to cool for a few minutes if it seems too hot for you. You can continue your treatment as normal after a short cooling period.

6.2 Special instructions for facial treatments

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - Special instructions for facial treatments - 1

WARNING

  • Men must not use this device on the face.
  • Do not use the device on the face at an energy level higher than 2. Do not use the device on the face above the cheekbones or on the eyes, eyebrows or eyelashes, as this could result in severe damage to the eyes. Do not use the device on mucous membranes in the nose or throat area.
  • The skin on your face is very sensitive and requires special care. Observe all warning and safety notes in these instructions for use to prevent adverse consequences. We recommend that you first perform a treatment on your body and get to know the device before performing facial treatment. The device can be used to treat all areas of the face below the cheekbones, such as the upper lip, cheeks, jaw, chin and neck.

  • You must carry out a skin sensitivity test 48 hours before treatment (see section 5.1). The skin sensitivity test should be performed on an area without hair, such as below the ear or on the side of the neck, to determine the suitable energy level.

BEURER IPL Pure Skin Pro - WARNING - 1

WARNING

Do not treat the tested area until at least one week after performing the skin sensitivity test.

  1. Mark the treated area with a white eyeliner pencil. Use the marking as an orientation line for issuing the pulses. This way you can prevent overlapping the treatment areas or treating other areas of the face by mistake.
  2. Use a mirror to position the device correctly on the treatment area.
  3. Follow the instructions for use (see section 6) and observe the following specific instructions in particular.

Treating the upper lip

Position the light area of the device as shown in the figure. Trigger a pulse in every marked zone.

Avoid applying the treatment to the nostrils and lips, as these areas are more sensitive.

You can “fold in” your lips or press them together to make the treatment area more taut, or apply a thick layer of white eyeliner to the lips and around the edge of the lips. The white line ensures that the energy of the flash is reflected and does not reach your lips, should you accidentally apply a pulse to your lip.

Care after facial treatment

  • Apply a soothing lotion such as aloe vera.
  • Do not use exfoliators, whitening lotions or similar products for at least 24 hours, as this could irritate the treated skin.
  • For at least 48 hours after the treatment, avoid more than 15 minutes of direct exposure to the sun. If the treated skin is exposed to sunlight during this period, sun protection with SPF 30 or higher must be applied.
  • Do not remove hair on the treated areas using wax or tweezers.

Remember that it may take a complete hair growth cycle for hair removal to be complete.

6.3 Application cycle

For body treatment:

  • The first three or four hair removal sessions using the beurer Pure Skin Pro System should be performed around two weeks apart.
  • The fifth to seventh hair removal sessions using the beurer Pure Skin Pro System should be performed around four weeks apart. Afterwards, you may use the beurer Pure Skin Pro System from time to time as necessary, until lasting results are achieved.

For facial treatment:

  • The first six hair removal sessions using the beurer Pure Skin Pro System should be performed around two weeks apart.
  • The seventh to twelfth hair removal sessions using the beurer Pure Skin Pro System should be performed around four weeks apart. Afterwards, you may use the beurer Pure Skin Pro System from time to time as necessary, until lasting results are achieved.

This corresponds to the recommended treatment plan that has proven to achieve the best results. You can, however, create a different personal treatment plan and still achieve satisfactory results.

6.4 After treatment using the device

  1. When you have completed the hair removal session, hold and press the ON/OFF/power selection button for 3 seconds. The device is in stand-by mode when the the small, green indicator lamp flashes.
  2. Remove the mains adapter from the mains socket.
  3. After each hair removal session, it is recommended that you clean the device, in particular the light area (see “Maintenance and cleaning”).
  4. After cleaning, it is recommended that you store the device in its original box and keep it away from water.
  5. After treatments, do not use any antiperspirants/deodorants as these may cause skin irritation.

7. Maintenance and cleaning

7.1 Cleaning the device

After each hair removal session it is recommended that you clean your device, paying particular attention to the light area.

When cleaning, do not use any solvents or other aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents, as the surface may become damaged.

Never immerse the device or any of its parts in water!

  1. Before cleaning, remove the mains adapter of the device from the socket.
  2. Clean the housing of the device with a dry, clean cloth.
  3. Gently clean the light area and skin contact sensor using a slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

8. What if there are problems?

"The device will not switch on"

  • Ensure that the mains cable is correctly connected to the device.
  • Ensure that the mains adapter is inserted into a wall socket.

"No light pulse is emitted when I press the trigger button"

  • Ensure that the device is in full contact with the skin and that the light area and skin contact sensor are pressed onto the skin evenly and firmly. For your safety, the trigger button only activates a pulse if the skin contact sensor is completely covered by the skin.
  • If the indicator lamp on the device is illuminated red, this indicates that your skin colour, as measured by the skin colour sensor, is too dark for safe application. Test the device on another part of your body or contact Customer Services.
  • If the indicator lamp on the device is illuminated orange, this indicates that the contact with the skin, as measured by the skin contact sensor, is insufficient. Increase the level of contact with the skin or contact Customer Services.
  • If the indicator lamp permanently lights up red, the maximum number of pulses has been reached.

9. Frequently asked questions

Does the device technology really work?

Yes. In clinical tests performed by doctors, it was proven that the technology in the beurer Pure Skin Pro System can be used to achieve lasting hair removal results.

However, the results may vary depending on the hair growth cycle, the energy level used and the hair thickness and colour.

How long does a treatment session last using the device?

The time can vary depending on the area of the body being treated. A full body treatment (legs, arms, armpits, bikini zone and face below the cheekbones) takes approximately 20 minutes at the lowest intensity level. As the device is operated using electricity, it can be used for as long as is necessary to perform a full hair removal session on the desired area(s) of the body.

Is the device safe?

The device was developed with a strong focus on your safety and employs clinically tested technology. However, this device – like any other product or electronic device intended for application on the skin – must be used in accordance with the instructions for use and the safety notes for users.

Is the device painful to use?

When used correctly, most users of the device report a slight warm feeling when the light pulse is issued. Users with thicker and darker hair may experience slightly more discomfort, however this subsides once the hair removal session is complete. The device has three power settings, which you can select depending on the sensitivity of your skin.

How often should I use the device?

In the case of body hair treatment with the device, the first four sessions should be performed two weeks apart. The fifth to seventh sessions inclusive can be performed four weeks apart. Any further sessions should be performed if the hair has grown back until the desired results

have been achieved. In the case of treatment of hair on the face below the cheekbones, the first six sessions should be performed two weeks apart. The seventh to twelfth sessions can be performed four weeks apart. Any further sessions should be performed if the hair has grown back until the desired results have been achieved.

Is the device also effective on white, grey or blond hair?

The device is most effective on dark hair types or on hair with a high melanin content. Melanin is the pigment that gives hair and skin its colour and absorbs light energy. Black and dark brown hair shows the best response. Brown and light brown hair also responds to treatment, but it usually requires more hair removal sessions. A limited effect can be seen on red hair. White, grey or blond hair does not usually respond to the device, although several users have noticed results after multiple hair removal sessions.

Can I use the device on brown or black skin?

The device is not effective on naturally dark skin. The device is a light-based device that removes undesired hair by means of the selective treatment of the hair pigment. A different amount of pigment is present in the surrounding skin tissue. The amount of pigment in the skin of any given person – which can be seen by the colour of the skin – determines the degree of risk that the person is exposed to when using the device. Treating dark skin with a light-based hair removal procedure can have adverse consequences, such as burns, blisters or discolouration of the skin (hyper- or hypopigmentation). The device contains an integrated skin colour sensor, which measures the colour of the skin to be treated prior to each flash. The skin colour sensor prevents the device from issuing further pulses if it detects that the device is being used on darker skin tones.

When can I expect to see noticeable results?

As with all other hair removal devices that are based on light or lasers, the results cannot be seen immediately and you could even think that nothing has happened at all. After a hair removal session, the hair sometimes appears to grow back, but normally, the majority of these hairs will simply fall out after two weeks. Additionally, hair grows in three different stages and the device only has an effect on the hairs in the active growth phase. This is one of the main reasons why multiple sessions are necessary to achieve the desired result.

Is the device also suitable for use by men?

Men must not use the device on their facial hair.

Although the device was developed for women, it may also be suitable for use by men.

However, men's hair – typically on the chest – will require more hair removal sessions than women do to achieve the desired results.

Why is my hair still growing although I treated it a week ago?

It may seem as though the hair is still growing up to two weeks after a hair removal session using the device. This is known as the “ejection” process and, after around two weeks, you will find that the hairs simply fall out or can be pulled out with a slight tug. (However, we do not recommend that you pull on the hairs – simply let them fall out naturally). It is also possible that some hairs are not affected by the device due to a missed application or different

growth phases. These hairs are treated in subsequent sessions and this is why several hair removal sessions are required to achieve the best results with the device.

Is it true that some hairs grow back thinner and finer after a light-based hair removal treatment?

This phenomenon has been excessively documented by beauticians and doctors who use light- and laser-based hair removal devices. It is possible that some hairs grow back thinner and finer after hair removal using the device. Normally, these hairs are a mere fraction of those that were originally there and further treatment can have the desired effect on them.

Why can't I perform a treatment when I have an "active" tan?

Do not use the device on tanned skin or after exposure to the sun. Tanned skin, especially after exposure to the sun, contains a large amount of the pigment melanin. This applies to all skin types and colours, including those that do not seem to tan quickly. The presence of a large amount of melanin exposes the skin to an increased risk of negative consequences in relation to the use of the device, including burns, blistering and discolouration of the skin (hyper- or hypopigmentation).

Is long-term usage of the device bad for my skin?

The use of light and laser energy in aesthetic medicine has been excessively documented for over 15 years in professional journals that are checked by experts, and by reputable institutions such as the Mayo Clinic. These journals and institutions have not reported any side effects or damage as a result of long-term use of light- and laser-based devices.

After unprotected exposure to the sun, how long should I wait before performing a treatment with the device?

You should wait two weeks after unprotected exposure to the sun before using the device. If you are still unsure about exposure to the sun, you should consult your doctor.

Are there any particular steps I need to take before using the device?

Before each session using the device, it is important that exposure of the treated surface to the sun is avoided for at least two weeks. This can be aided by UV sun cream (SPF 30+) and clothing that covers the treated area. Furthermore, the area to be treated should be cleaned with mild soap and water and the hair should be shaved down to the surface of the skin.

How should I look after the treated skin surface following a treatment?

The treated skin surface can be cleaned and cared for using commercially available skin care products. Take particular care to avoid unprotected exposure to the sun for up to 48 hours after the treatment. Sun cream with a high sun protection factor (30+) and clothing that covers the area provide sufficient protection from the sun.

10. Disposal
