Frequently Asked Questions - Studimon 5 Palmer

How to connect the Studimon 5 monitor?
Preferably use balanced wiring via the XLR or 6.35 mm TRS jack input. Do not connect both inputs simultaneously. Connect the power cable to the IEC mains socket.
What is the best listening position for this monitor?
Place the monitors in an equilateral triangle with the listening position, about 1 meter away. The tweeters should be at ear level. Avoid corners and use separate stands.
How to adjust the volume?
Turn the VOLUME knob counterclockwise to decrease and clockwise to increase. Set both monitors to the same level for a homogeneous stereo reproduction.
What does the orange LED on the front panel mean?
The orange power LED lights up when the device is properly connected and powered on via the POWER ON/OFF switch.
Which cables to use for best sound quality?
Balanced wiring with shielded XLR cables is preferred to reduce interference. Unbalanced wiring (mono jack) is possible but less effective.
How to clean the monitor?
Use a dry cloth for cleaning. Never use liquids or abrasive products. Disconnect the device before cleaning.
Can I replace the fuse myself?
Yes, but only with a fuse of the same type and rating. If the fuse blows frequently, contact an authorized repair center.
What are important safety precautions?
Do not expose to water, flames, or heat. Do not block ventilation slots. Disconnect during storms. Never open the device: risk of electric shock.
Is this monitor suitable for professional use?
Yes, it is designed for professional use with accurate sound reproduction, wide dynamics, and excellent transient response thanks to Bi-Amping technology.
How to dispose of the device at end of life?
Do not dispose of with household waste. Follow local regulations for electronic waste sorting. Contact your dealer for recycling.

  2. If the equipment has been exposed to strong fluctuations in temperature (for example, after transport), do not switch it on immediately. Moisture and condensation could damage the equipment. Do not switch on the equipment until it has reached room temperature.
  3. Before connecting the equipment to the power outlet, first verify that the mains voltage and frequency match the values specified on the equipment. If the equipment has a voltage selection switch, connect the equipment to the power outlet only if the equipment values and the mains power values match. If the included power cord or power adapter does not fit in your wall outlet, contact your electrician.
  4. Do not step on the power cord. Make certain that the power cable does not become kinked, especially at the mains outlet and/or power adapter and the equipment connector.
  5. When connecting the equipment, make certain that the power cord or power adapter is always freely accessible. Always disconnect the equipment from the power supply if the equipment is not in use or if you want to clean the equipment. Always unplug the power cord and power adapter from the power outlet at the plug or adapter and not by pulling on the cord. Never touch the power cord and power adapter with wet hands.

  8. To disconnect the equipment from the power mains completely, unplug the power cord or power adapter from the power outlet.
  9. If your device is equipped with a Volex power connector, the mating Volex equipment connector must be unlocked before it can be removed. However, this also means that the equipment can slide and fall down if the power cable is pulled, which can lead to personal injuries and/or other damage. For this reason, always be careful when laying cables.
  10. Unplug the power cord and power adapter from the power outlet if there is a risk of a lightning strike or before extended periods of disuse.

INTRODUCTION

The compact and powerful Palmer STUDIOMON 5 is a 2-way nearfield studio monitor with bi-amping technology. It has a magnetically shielded 5-inch woofer with elastic rubber surround, a 0.75-inch tweeter with silk calotte, and a bassreflex port for extended low frequency performance. The speakers are run with 30 watt class AB amplifiers that provide a well-defined sound, and have a high dynamic range and excellent transient response. Balanced line inputs, with XLR and 6.35 mm jacks complete the professional features.

Scope of delivery: Power cable, user manual

SETUP AND POSITIONING OF THE STUDIO MONITORS

The Palmer STUDIMON5 control loudspeakers are nearfield monitors that are best positioned around one meter from the listening position. Set the monitors up upright, with the tweeter at the top, so that your listening position, the left and right monitors form an equilateral triangle. The speakers should also be set up at the same height as your listening position. The tweeter of the monitor should be at around ear height, or in other words directly aimed at the ears. If possible, do not position the monitors in the corner of a room, and avoid direct side wall, ceiling or ground reflection in the direction of the listening position. Using separate monitor stands prevents mechanical coupling with a surface. Because spatial conditions often mean that optimal monitor and listening positions cannot be achieved, equalization with a multi-band equalizer may be required. Purposefully arranged acoustic absorbers also help optimize room acoustics. Set the monitors up in the listening room in such a way that there is no asymmetry in the monitor positioning (e.g. one monitor in a corner, the other standing freely in the room), as this asymmetry can create a drastically differing frequency response between the two monitors and prevent accurate, homogeneous stereo sound.

CABLING

Cabling with unbalanced signal cables (e.g. shielded cables with mono jack plugs) is fundamentally possible, however, due to their lower susceptibility to interference, balanced cabling with shielded XLR cables is preferable.

1 POWER SOCKET AND FUSE HOLDER

IEC power socket with integrated fuse holder. A suitable power cable is included in delivery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Only replace the fuse with a fuse of the same type. Please note the inscription on the housing. If a fuse trips repeatedly, please contact an authorized service center.

2 POWER ON / OFF

On / off switch for the device power supply. The studio monitor should always be the last device to be switched on in the signal chain, and the first to be switched off.

3 INPUT XLR

Balanced line input with female 3-pin XLR jack. Both input jacks are wired in parallel. Do not use both input jacks at the same time.

4 INPUT TRS (Tip - Ring - Sleeve)

Balanced line input with 6.35 mm jack. Both input jacks are wired in parallel. Do not use both input jacks at the same time.

5 VOLUME MIN - MAX

Turn the volume control counterclockwise to turn down the volume, and clockwise to turn it up. Set the left and right monitors to the same volume level to achieve homogeneous stereo sound.

6 BASS REFLEX OPENING

Do not place any items in the bass reflex opening, do not place items directly behind the bass reflex opening and do not cover the opening. Failure to observe these rules can lead to altered sound dispersion and cause undesired noise.

7 POWER LED

The power LED on the front of the monitor lights up as soon as the device has been correctly connected to the mains and it has been switched on.

8 TWEETER

Tweeter with 19 mm silk calotte and 28 mm neodymium magnet.

9 WOOFER

Magnetically shielded 127 mm woofer with polypropylene membrane, rubber surround and ventilated magnet system (80 mm ferrite magnet).
