Fire hazard: Gasoline is flammable. Never pour fuel in the trimmer/brushcutter fuel tank while the engine is running or still hot. Do not smoke and keep the fuel away from any sources of heat.

Breathing exhaust fumes may be fatal. Never start or run the engine inside an enclosed room or building.

Hot surface warning: Contact with hot surfaces may cause serious burns. During use and for a little while after stopping the engine, the engine and the gearcase are very hot. Do not touch the hot surfaces of the unit such as the cylinder, silencer and gearcase.

HORN HANDLE INSTALLATION (SEE FIG.2) [MODELS: PBC-3243M, PBC-4243M, PBC-5043M]
- Loosen the four screws on the upper part of the clamp bracket.
- Insert the left and right horn handles into the clamp bracket.
Note: the horn handle with the throttle trigger and stop switch goes on the right-hand side of the trimmer/brushcutter.
- Adjust the horn handles to the desired position, then tighten the four screws.
LOOP HANDLE INSTALLATION (SEE FIG. 3)
Loop handle must be assembled gearcase side from the arrow (A).
[Models: PBC-3243ML]
- Slip the rubber sleeve around the shaft.
- Place the loop handle and the bottom clamp over the rubber sleeve.
- Install the four screws and nuts. Tighten the screws evenly.
INSTALLING THE GUARD (SEE FIG. 4)

WARNING:
Never operate the Trimmer / Brushcutter without the guard in place.
- Attach the blade guard to the gearcase with the four M5X12 screws as shown in figure 4. (MODEL PBC-3243M)
- Attach the blade guard to the gearcase with the two M6X30 screws as shown in figure 4. (MODEL PBC-4243M/ PBC-5043M)
INSTALLING THE STRING CUTOFF BLADE AND GUARD EXTENSION TO THE BLADE GUARD (SEE FIG. 5)
- Fasten the string cutoff blade (A) to the blade guard with the two M5X25 screws, lock washers and hex nuts as shown in figure 5.
- Attach the guard extension (B) to the blade guard with the five M5X15 screws, washers and hex nuts as shown in figure 5.
INSTALLING THE CUTTING ATTACHMENT
WARNING: - Do not use it!
- Make sure you have properly installed all required parts before mounting any cutting attachment on the unit. Failure to use the proper parts can cause the cutting attachment to fly off and seriously injure the operator and/or bystanders.
BRUSHCUTTER BLADE (SEE FIG. 6)
- Remove the blade bolt, stabiliser and clamping washer from the attaching shaft out of the gearcase. Note: The blade bolt has left-hand thread (A).
- Install the brushcutter blade onto the boss adapter, then put the clamping washer, stabiliser and blade bolt back in place.
- Align the hole in the boss adapter with the guide slot in the gearcase.
- Insert the lock pin into the hole in the boss adapter and the guide slot in the gearcase to lock the attaching shaft (B).
- Tighten the blade bolt.
■ NYLON TRIMMER LINE (SEE FIG. 7)
- Align the hole in the boss adapter with the guide slot in the gearcase.
- Insert the lock pin into the hole in the boss adapter and the guide slot in the gearcase to lock the attaching shaft (B).
- Insert the trimmer head adapter (A) into the attaching shaft, then tighten the trimmer head by hand.
Note: The trimmer head adapter has left-hand thread (A).
STARTING AND STOPPING

WARNING:
Mix and pour fuel outdoors where there are no sparks or flames. Carefully remove the fuel cap after stopping the engine. Do not smoke while refuelling or mixing fuel.
STARTING

CAUTION:
- To avoid engine stalling, make sure the petrol and oil are properly mixed.
- To prevent recoil starter damage, do not pull the starter rope out completely.
-
Do not release the starter rope suddenly from its fully extended position. This could break engine parts.
-
The use of unleaded petrol with synthetic oil is recommended to reduce pollution. The mixture ratio should be 50:1 (2%). If mineral oil is used, the mixture ratio should be 25:1 (4%).
Synthetic oil: "FC" oil grade in JASO scheme
Mineral oil: "FB" oil grade in JASO scheme
Before starting the engine
- Fill the fuel tank and rest the trimmer/brushcutter on the ground.
- Make sure the cutting attachment is clear of any broken glass, nails, wire, stones or other debris.
- Keep all bystanders, children and animals away from the working area. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and ear protectors to dampen the noise level.
Always wear heavy long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, boots and gloves when working with this tool. Do not wear loose clothing, jewellery, shorts or sandals, and never work barefoot. Tie hair so it is above shoulder length. - Never operate this trimmer/brushcutter when you are tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medications.
- Be sure to secure the metal blade when storing the tool or transporting it.
Cold starting procedure (see Fig. 8)
- Turn the choke lever (A) to the closed position ()
- Pump the primer bulb (B) until fuel can be seen flowing through the fuel return line (C) to the fuel tank. Flowing fuel should be almost clear, not foamy or full of bubbles.
- Put the stop switch (D) in the "START/ON" position (G), and the throttle trigger on the fast-idle start position (E: Press F), pull the starter cord. Once the engine has started, turn the choke lever to the open position () . Then squeeze and release the throttle trigger to allow it to return to the idle position.
If the engine stops running before you turn the choke lever to the open position () : go ahead and open the choke, pull the starter cord with the throttle trigger positioned on the fast-idle start position.
Hot restart (see Fig. 8)
To start the engine when it is already warmed up (hot restart).
1. Turn the choke lever to the open position () , and set the stop switch to the "START/ON" position (G).
2. Leave the throttle trigger in the idle position and pull the starter grip.
3. If the engine fails to start after three to four pulls, follow the instructions in the Cold Starting Procedure section above.
To stop the engine (see Fig. 8)
- Release the throttle trigger.
- Put the stop switch in the "STOP/OFF" position (H).
IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT (SEE FIG. 9)
The cutting attachment may be moving during idle speed adjustment.
Wear the recommended personal protective equipment and observe all safety instructions.
Keep hands and body away from the cutting attachment.
When the throttle trigger is released, the engine should return to an idle speed.
The correct speed for models PBC-4243M and PBC-5043M is 2400 - 2800 min ^-1 ; for model PBC-3243M it is 2700 - 3300 min ^-1 (or just below the clutch engagement speed).
The cutting attachment must not turn and the engine should not stall (stop running) at engine idle speed.
To adjust the engine idle speed, turn the idle speed adjustment screw (A) on the carburetor.
OPERATING POSITION (SEE FIG. 10 - 11)
- You must always wear the shoulder harness attached to the trimmer/brushcutter, and hold the tool on your right side.

- Hold the right-hand horn handle grip with your right hand, with your fingers on the throttle trigger.
- With your left hand, hold the left-hand horn handle grip, with your fingers and thumb fully enclosed around the grip.
[PBC-3243M, PBC-3243ML]
- The operator's right hand should be holding the shaft grip, with his or her fingers on the throttle trigger. The right arm should be slightly bent.

The left hand should be holding the loop handle with the fingers and thumb fully enclosed around the grip. The left arm may be extended. Reposition the loop handle up or down the driveshaft if necessary for a comfortable position.
-
Squeeze the throttle trigger and wait until the engine has reached cutting speed before approaching the area to be cut.
- Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting.
-
Stop the engine when moving between work sites. If the cutting attachment becomes jammed, stop the engine immediately.
-
Make certain all moving parts have stopped and disconnect the spark plug before inspecting the equipment for damage.
- Never use a trimmer/brushcutter that has a chipped, cracked or broken cutting attachment or guard.
HARNESS (SEE FIG. 12)

WARNING
Never operate the Trimmer / Brushcutter without installing and using the harness.
Insert the hook (A) into the ring (B) on the drive shaft. To detach the harness quickly from the trimmer/brushcutter, pull upward on the tab (C).
OPERATION

WARNING
Ensure that there are no children, bystanders or pets in the work area. Keep all children, bystanders and helpers outside a 15-metre radius of the trimmer/ brushcutter. If a person approaches your work area, stop the engine and cutting attachment immediately.
Cutting direction of brushcutter blade (see Fig. 13)
When cutting heavy brush, always swing the brushcutter from right to left. Swinging the brushcutter from left to right can cause the blade to kick back.
A: Direction of swing (CORRECT)
B: No risk of kick-back
C:Direction of swing (INCORRECT)
D: Risk of kick-back (DANGER)
MAINTENANCE
Air filter (see Fig. 14)
The air filter should be cleaned daily, or more often when working in extremely dusty conditions.
- Replace every 100 hours of operation.
1. Remove the foam element (A).
2. Clean the foam element with warm, soapy water. Let the element dry completely.
3. Apply a light coat of SAE 30 motor oil to the foam element and squeeze out all excess oil.
4. Put the foam element and filter cover back in place.
Fuel filter (see Fig. 15)
The fuel filter should be replaced every 100 hours of operation.
- Make sure the fuel tank is empty.
- Unscrew the fuel tank cap, and pull up and remove the cap holder (A).
- Using a wire hook, gently pull the fuel filter out through the fuel filler opening.
- Grasp the fuel hose next to the fuel filter fitting and remove the filter (B), but do not release the hose.
- While still holding on to the fuel hose, attach the new fuel filter.
- Drop the new fuel filter back into the fuel tank.
- Make sure that the new fuel filter is not stuck in a corner of the tank, and that the fuel hose is not doubled over (kinked) before refuelling.
Spark plug (see Fig. 16)
- The spark plug should be removed from the engine and checked every 25 hours of operation.
- Replace the spark plug every 100 hours of operation.
- Gently twist the high tension lead boot on the spark plug back and forth a couple of times to loosen the boot, then pull the boot off the spark plug.
- Remove the spark plug.
- Clean the electrodes with a stiff brush.
- Adjust the spark plug gap to 0.6 - 0.7mm
- Replace the spark plug if it is oil-fouled, damaged, or if the electrodes are worn down.
- Do not overtighten the spark plug when installing. The tightening torque is 12-15 Nm.
Cylinder cooling fins (see Fig. 17)
- The cylinder cooling fins should be cleaned every 25 hours of operation, or once a week, whichever comes first.
Air must flow freely around and through the cylinder cooling fins to prevent engine overheating. Leaves, grass, dirt and debris build-up on the fins will increase the operating temperature of the engine, which can reduce engine performance and shorten engine life. - Loosen the clamping mechanism and lift off the cylinder cover.
- Clean all dirt and debris from the cooling fins and from around the cylinder base.
- Put the cylinder cover back in place.
Gearcase lubrication (see Fig. 18)
- The gearcase should be checked for lubrication every 30 hours of use.
- Remove the cutting attachment and the boss adapter.
- Clean any dirt and debris from the area between the boss adapter and the gearcase. Remove the grease plug from the side of the gearcase. While rotating the attaching shaft, inject lithium-base bearing lube (A: P/N 211337) through the plug hole (B) until the gearcase is full. Put the boss adapter and grease plug back in place.
Daily inspection
Make sure that the cutting attachment is not cracked or damaged. Replace it if damaged.
Make sure there are no fuel leaks from the engine. Repair as required, should any leaks appear.
- Check all fasteners on the unit. If loose, tighten them properly.
Storage (see Fig. 19)
For long-term storage of the trimmer/brushcutter:
1. Empty the fuel tank into a suitable fuel storage container.
2. Pump the primer bulb on the carburetor until all fuel is discharged through the clear fuel return hose.
3. Run the engine to remove any fuel that may remain in the carburetor.
4. Carry out all regular maintenance procedures and any needed repairs.
5. Remove the spark plug and squirt a very small amount of engine oil into the cylinder.
6. Pull the starter grip once.
7. Slowly pull the starter grip to bring the piston to the top of the cylinder (TDC).
8. Put the spark plug back in place.
9. Store the trimmer/brushcutter in a dry place away from excessive heat, sparks or open flame.
WARRANTY
All Ryobi products are guaranteed against manufacturing defects and defective parts for a period of twenty four (24) months from the date stated on the original invoice drawn up by the retailer and given to the end user.
Deterioration caused by normal wear and tear, unauthorised or improper use or maintenance, or overload are excluded from this guarantee as are accessories such as battery packs, light bulbs, blades, fittings, bags, etc.
In the event of malfunction during the warranty period, please take the NON-DISMANTLED product, along with the proof of purchase, to your retailer or nearest Authorised Ryobi Service Centre.
This warranty in no way affects your legal rights concerning defective products.
