USER MANUAL GK430 BLACK & DECKER

Read all of this manual carefully, observing all the recommended safety instructions before, during and after using your machine, and maintain your machine in good working order.

Familiarise yourself with the controls on your machine before attempting to operate it, but above all, be sure you know how to stop your machine in an emergency.

Retain this manual and all other literature supplied with your machine for future reference.

Safety instructions

  • Know your chainsaw. Please read the instruction leaflet carefully and familiarize yourself with the chainsaw; in particular with regard to the sawing of round wood.
  • Wear close fitting and protective clothing - including a safety helmet, goggles, safety shoes and gloves. We recommend rubber gloves and rubber footwear for outdoor use.
  • For all types of cutting. Always hold the saw firmly with both hands, with thumbs and fingers encircling the saw handles. Do not release your finger until the chainsaw has stopped moving.
  • Fatigue. Never operate a chainsaw when you are tired.
  • Avoid dangerous environments. Do not expose your chainsaw to damp and wet conditions. Keep the work area well lit. Use a saw horse whenever possible.
  • Keep children away. Make sure that other people - especially children and pets- stay away from the work area.
  • Be sure of your footing and pre-plan a safe exit from a falling tree or branches.
  • Use wedges to help control felling and prevent binding the guide bar and saw chain in the cut.
  • Keep all parts of your body and clothing away from the saw chain when running the chainsaw. Before you switch on make sure the chainsaw is not contacting anything. Do not touch or try to stop a moving saw chain with your hand. Be specially careful when using in a kneeling position.
  • Carry your chainsaw carefully with the mains supply disconnected and with the guide bar and saw chain to the rear.

  • Do not abuse the cable. Never carry a chainsaw by the cable or jerk it to disconnect the plug from the socket. Keep the cable away from heat, oil or sharp edges. Check the cable frequently for damage.

  • Do not operate a chainsaw which is damaged, improperly adjusted or is not completely and securely assembled.
  • Keep your chainsaw clean. Do not allow dirt, oil or sawdust to build up on the chainsaw; pay particular attention to the air inlet and outlet slots. These must not become clogged. Clean your chainsaw with a dry cloth, but do not use any solvents or cleaning fluids.
  • Saw chain care. Keep the saw chain sharp and snug on the guide bar. Ensure the saw chain and guide bar are clean and well oiled.
  • Beware of kickback. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands when the motor is running. Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the chainsaw handles and watch carefully what you cut. Kickback (that is when the chainsaw jumps or jerks up or backward) can be caused by:

  • Striking branches or other objects accidentally with a tip of the saw while the saw chain is moving.

  • Striking metal, cement or any other hard material near the wood, or buried in the wood.
  • A dull or loose chain.
  • Cutting above shoulder height.
  • Inattention in holding or guiding the saw while cutting.
Overbalancing. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not overreach.

  • We strongly recommend you do not attempt to operate the chainsaw while in a tree, on a ladder or on any other unstable surface. If you decide to do so, be advised that these positions are extremely dangerous.

  • When cutting a branch that is under tension, be alert for springback so that you will not be struck when the tension is released.

  • Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings because slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you, or pull you off balance.
  • Switch off before setting the chainsaw down. The saw chain will continue to run for a short period after the saw has been switched off.

  • Secure your work using clamps or chocks. Be sure that you use both hands when operating your chainsaw.

  • Remove the plug from the mains before changing the work location, adjusting or cleaning, or if the cord becomes entangled or damaged.
  • Your chainsaw when not is use. Do not store your chainsaw for any length of time without first removing the saw chain and guide bar which should be kept immersed in oil. Store all parts of your chainsaw in a dry, secure place out of reach of children. We recommend you drain the oil reservoir prior to storage.
  • Do not saw wet wood or use the chainsaw when it is raining. We recommend you use the chainsaw in combination with a residual current device; specification: delta I = 30mA1.
  • Do not use the chainsaw above shoulder height.
  • Ensure someone is nearby (but at a safe distance) in case of an accident.
  • Do not try to insert into a previous cut, as this could cause kickback. Always make a fresh cut every time.
  • When carrying the chainsaw, please use the protection sleeve for the bar.
  • Only use extension cable type HO7RN-F 2 × 1mm^2
  • If for any reason you have to touch the chain, make sure the chainsaw is disconnected from the mains.

Warning symbols on the chainsaw (Fig. A)

A

  1. Read all of this manual carefully.
  2. Do not use your chainsaw in wet conditions.
  3. Always remove the plug from the socket before inspecting a damaged cable. Be careful not to use the chainsaw if the cable is damaged.
  4. Before you press the lock-off switch check that the chain brake reset button is properly engaged.

Double insulation

Your machine is double insulated. This means that all external metal parts are electrically isolated from the power supply. This is achieved by placing an extra insulation barrier between the electrical and mechanical parts. Double insulation means greater electrical safety and obviates the necessity of having the machine earthed.

ENGLISH

Black & Decker policy is one of continuous improvement to their products and as such they reserve the right to change product specification without prior notice.

Electrical safety

Your machine should always be switched off at the mains before disconnecting any plug and socket connector or extension cables. Make sure your machine is correct for your supply. The voltage for this machine is on the rating plate. We strongly recommend the use of PVC or rubber covered plugs or connectors with your chainsaw. The recommended fuse for use with your machine is 13 amps.

Note: Fuses do not give protection against electric shock.

New cable connection system (UK only)

Black & Decker continually make every effort to achieve the highest standards in performance, quality and reliability and recommend the use of the new outdoor cable connection system.

The new system gives additional protection against the possibility of water or moisture entering into the cable connector during normal use.

Note: The new connection system does not release the operator of the machine from the safety precautions/warnings and safe working practices given in this instruction leaflet. Particular attention is drawn to the coupler system as being "weather resistant" and not suitable for immersion, submersion or being subjected to water jets. Care should be taken to prevent the cable from lying or trailing through pools of water or from splashing with hose pipes.

The new cable system is available in various lengths through most major DIY retail outlets:

A6611 15m heavy duty cable, new socket, 13 amp plug and cable tidy system

A6612 25m heavy duty cable, new socket, 13 amp plug and cable tidy system

A6613 40m heavy duty cable, new socket, 13 amp plug and cable tidy system

Existing cable systems (UK only)

If you already own an outdoor cable system, we recommend that you replace the existing "female" cable connector with the new 'female' connector (see below) which is supplied loose in the carton. (Please read the section entitled "fitting the 'female' connector".)

  • WARNING! Never wire an extension cable with anything other than the 'female' connector supplied and a 13 amp BS1363A approved plug with the recommended fuse. Never wire a 'male' connector to your extension cable and never wire an extension cable with a plug of any

kind at each end of the cable. This is extremely dangerous and results in the pins being live which may cause a fatal electric shock.

Note: The recommended fuse for use with this machine is 13 amps.

Fitting the 'female' connector (UK only)

To remove the cover, unscrew the fixing screw until it is free of the nut which is located in the hexagonal recess on the underside of the connector. Take care not to lose the nut if it falls out. There is no need to completely remove the fixing screw as it is intended to remain captive in the cover. The cover can now be removed by applying pressure as shown below.

BLACK & DECKER GK430 - Fitting the 'female' connector (UK only) - 1

The extension cable contains two wires which are colour coded for easy recognition; brown is for 'Live' (L) and blue is for 'Neutral' (N). The female connector is marked 'L' for live and 'N' for neutral. These markings are located inside the body near the terminal screws (see below, figure a). With the connector cover removed, lift out the cable protector and proceed as follows:

  • Pass the cable through from the narrow end of the cable protector (see below, figure a).
  • Prepare the cable ends to the specified strip lengths (see below, figure b).
  • Remove cable clamp (see below, figure a). Take care of loose parts.
  • To connect the extension cable to the connector terminals, unscrew the terminal screws until the clamp washers have lifted just enough to enter the conductor between the raised washer and the terminal (see below). Connect the brown lead to 'L' and the blue lead to 'N'. N.B. There is no need to remove the terminal screws. Connections are not to be made under the screw heads.

  • Locate the cable and cable protector into the body correctly (see below, figure a). Then fit the cable clamp over the outer sheath of the cable and screw down until the screws are fully home. Failure to do this may result in the cover not fitting correctly to the connector body.
  • Before replacing the cover of the 'female' connector make sure that the cable clamp is holding the outer sheath of the cable firmly with screws fully home and that the two leads are correctly fixed at the terminal screws and are not taut (see below, figure a).
  • Place the cover onto the body assembly ensuring that it seats flat, then retighten the fixing screw into the nut until the cover is securely held (see below, figure c).
  • Finally check that the cable protector is secure and that there are no gaps between the cover and the connector body.

Fitting the mains plug

  • The cable wire colours, or a letter, will be marked at the connection points of most good quality plugs. Attach the wires to their respective points in the plug (see below). Brown is for 'Live' (L) and blue is for 'Neutral' (N).
  • The recommended fuse to use with this product is 13 amps. Please ensure that the plug being fitted is equipped with a fuse of the correct rating. Note: Fuses do not give personal protection against electric shock.
  • Before replacing the top cover of the mains plug ensure that the cable restraint is holding the outer sheath on the cable firmly and that the two leads are correctly fixed at the terminal screws.
  • Do not wire an extension cable directly into your machine. Rather than attempting this yourself, you should take your machine to your nearest Black & Decker Service Station.

Additional electrical safety

Increased safety can be obtained by having a qualified electrician install a high sensitivity circuit breaker in the house wiring. If you do not have such a circuit breaker installed, or you do not wish to have one installed, then we strongly recommend that the electrical power to the machine be supplied through a 30mA high sensitivity residual current device (RCD). The RCD is designed to provide a high degree of personal protection against harmful electric current should fault conditions occur.

WARNING! The use of an RCD or other circuit breaker unit does not release the operator of the machine from the safety instructions and safe working practices given in this manual.

Assembly

Always wear protective gloves when working on your chainsaw.

  • Using the spanner provided, remove the side panel.
  • Fit the saw chain over the guide bar, making sure that the chain is the right way round.
  • Fit the sliding nut and tensioning screw into the slide way.
  • Put the bar and chain onto the saw, ensuring the chain is around the sprocket wheel.
  • Adjust the tensioning screw until the peg fits into the hole in the bar.
  • Replace the side panel, tightening the nut finger tight.
  • Adjust the tension on the chain with the tension screw. The tension is correct when the chain can be pulled 3mm away from the chain bar when using finger and thumb.
  • Tighten the side panel nut with the spanner.
  • Do not overtighten as this will reduce the life of the chain and guide bar.

Oiling

Fill the reservoir via the filler cap with the recommended chain oil. You see the oil level in the indicator slot. Periodically switch off and check the oil in the indicator; if it is less than a quarter full, disconnect the saw from the mains and refill with the correct oil.

Chain brake

Your chainsaw is fitted with a chainbrake which will stop the chainsaw immediately if kickback should occur.

To set the machine:

  • Ensure that your chainsaw is disconnected from the mains supply.
  • Push the reset button until it is down completely.
  • Pull the chainbrake bar towards you until it clicks into place.
  • Your chainbrake is now ready for use.

Note: The chainsaw will not operate correctly unless the reset button has been properly engaged

How the chainbrake works

In the event of kickback, the left hand comes into contact with the bar of the chainbrake and this will stop the chainsaw immediately.

To reset after the operation of the chainbrake

Follow the instructions for setting the chainbrake.

Preparing for use

Chain oiling

You must do this whenever you use a new chain for the first time. Take the new chain out of its plastic bag and soak it in chain oil for at least an hour before using it. Use Black & Decker chain oil (cat. nos. A6022, A6055).

We recommend that you use only one brand of oil during the lifetime of the chainsaw because mixtures of different oils could lead to the oil becoming degraded, which drastically shortens the lifetime of the saw.

Never use waste oil, thick oil or very thin sewing machine oil. These may damage your machine.

To switch on

Press the lock-off switch whilst pressing the trigger to start your chainsaw. Use your chainsaw to cut wood only. Do not force the saw; it will do a better and safer job at the speed for which it is designed.

Excessive force will stretch the chain.

If the saw chain or bar becomes jammed:

  • Switch off.
  • Disconnect from the mains supply.
  • Open the cut with wedges to relieve the strain on the guide bar. Do not try to wrench the saw free. Start a fresh cut.

Felling (Fig. C)

BLACK & DECKER GK430 - Felling (Fig. C) - 1

Refer to the illustrations in Fig. C.

  1. Pre-plan a safe exit from falling tree or branches.
  2. Cut one third of the diameter of the tree. Then cut down from above to make a notch of about 45^ . This way you will avoid pinching the saw.
  3. Make a single felling cut from the other side but stop before you cut through to the notch.
  4. Drive a wedge or wedges into the felling cut to open it and drop the tree.

Logging

How you should cut depends on how the log is supported. Use a saw horse whenever possible.

Supported along its whole length

Make a downward cut, but avoid cutting the earth as this will blunt your saw quickly.

Supported at both ends

First cut one third down, to avoid splintering - second, cut to meet the first cut.

Supported at one end

First cut one third up, to avoid splintering - second, cut down to prevent splintering.

On a slope

Always stand on the uphill side.

Position the log in a stable position. Always cut on the outside of the saw horse arms.

Care and maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures a long effective life for your chainsaw. We recommend you make the following checks on a regular basis.

Oil level

The level in the reservoir should not be allowed to fall below a quarter full.

Chain and bar

After every few hours of use, remove the guide bar and chain and clean thoroughly. On reassembling, the guide bar should be turned through 180^ . This ensures an even distribution of wear around the guide bar rails.

Saw chain sharpening

If you are to get the best possible performance from the chainsaw, it is important to keep the teeth of the chainsaw sharp. Guidance for this procedure is found on the chainsaw sharpener package. For this purpose we recommend the purchase of the Black & Decker saw chain sharpening kit (available from Black & Decker service stations and selected dealers).

Replacing worn out chains

Replacement chains are available through retailers or Black & Decker service stations. Always use genuine spare parts.

Fault finding

If your chainsaw does not operate correctly check the following.

  • The saw chain sharpness. The cutters will blunt immediately if they touch the ground or a nail whilst cutting.
  • The saw chain tension. This should be done regularly.
The oil level. Top up if low.
