How to change the blade of the saber saw?

Always unplug the tool. Fully rotate the chuck collar, insert the blade fully into the chuck, then release the collar. Pull on the blade to ensure it is secure. To remove, rotate the collar and pull out the blade.

How to adjust the shoe of the saw?

Ensure the tool is unplugged. Loosen the two shoe adjustment screws with the supplied hex key, set the shoe to the desired height, then retighten the screws.

Can this saw be used for plunge cuts?

Yes, but only on soft materials like wood or plasterboard. Use a blade specifically designed for plunge cutting. Inspect the surface to avoid hidden obstacles.

Electrical Safety

Personal Safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury

Power Tool Use & Care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation

Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained

WARNING: Before connecting a tool to a power source (mains switch power point receptacle, outlet, etc.) be sure that the voltage supply is the same as that specified on the nameplate of the tool. A power source with a voltage greater than that specified for the tool can result in serious injury to the user, and damage to the tool. If in doubt, do not plug in the tool. Using a power source with a voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.

Reciprocating Saw Safety

• Ensure that lighting is adequate
• Keep the area free of tripping hazards
• Wear appropriate safety equipment including eye protection and gloves to protect against vibration
• Never saw near combustible liquids or gases
• Check for hidden wiring and pipes before sawing
• Use recommended blades only
  Blades must be sharp and not cracked or distorted
• Before starting work, inspect the workpiece and remove all embedded objects such as nails, screws etc
  Support and secure the workpiece correctly
• When cutting cylindrical wood, use clamps that prevent the workpiece from turning
• Use the insulated handles when operating power tools. This protects the operator if the tool accidentally cuts through hidden electrical wiring, causing the tool to become 'live'
  Always stand to one side when operating the saw
• Do not use your hands to remove sawdust, chips or waste close to the blade
• Never reach over the blade to remove waste or off-cuts
• Do not attempt to free a jammed blade until the machine has been disconnected from the power
• Do not attempt to slow or stop a blade with any object. Let the blade come to rest naturally
• If you are interrupted when operating the saw, complete the process and switch off before looking up
  Periodically check the tool for loose nuts, bolts and tighten as necessary

Intended Use

Reciprocating power saw for light to medium duty cutting of wood, plasterboard, plastic, mild steel, and also non-ferrous metals (requiring the purchase of additional, material-specific saw blades).

Unpacking Your Tool

• Carefully unpack and inspect your tool. Familiarise yourself with all its features and functions
• Ensure that all parts of the tool are present and in good condition. If any parts are missing or damaged, have such parts replaced before attempting to use this tool

Before Use

Fitting a saw blade

WARNING: ALWAYS ensure that the tool is switched off and disconnected from the power supply, before fitting or removing saw blades.
WARNING: ALWAYS wear suitable cut-proof gloves when handling saw blades.
WARNING: DO NOT continue to use blunt, warped or otherwise damaged saw blades. Note: ALWAYS fit a saw blade specific to the material you are cutting.

1. Rotate the Chuck Collar (3) fully anticlockwise, and insert the blade shank as far as it will go into the chuck
2. Release the chuck collar
3. Pull the blade to ensure that it is secure. If it is not locked firmly in place, repeat the above procedure
4. To remove a blade from the chuck, rotate the chuck collar fully anticlockwise, and pull the blade forward, out of the chuck

Adjusting the handle

Note: The Handle (8) orientation of this reciprocating saw can be adjusted to adapt to working conditions and to best suit operator preference.

1. Push the Barrel Locking Switch (6) back to release the Rotating Barrel (5)
2. Rotate the Handle (8) to the position required
3. Release the Barrel Locking Switch. The barrel should lock in position with a click

Note: Rotate the barrel back and forth to check that it cannot move, or that it clicks into the adjacent lock position.

WARNING: DO NOT operate the tool unless the handle is securely locked in one of the 5 pre-set positions.

Adjusting the shoe

WARNING: ALWAYS ensure that the tool is switched off and disconnected from the power supply, before attempting to adjust the shoe.

1. Loosen the two Shoe Adjustment Screws (11) with the supplied hex key
2. Reposition the shoe to shield the length of the blade as required
3. Retighten the Shoe Adjustment Screws

WARNING: Take care not to over-tighten the screws, or you may damage the thread.

Note: Where possible, rest the shoe on the material being cut. Pivot the angle of the shoe to suit the shape of the material.

WARNING: DO NOT operate the reciprocating saw if the adjustable shoe is damaged or not installed.

Operation

WARNING: Always use adequate protective equipment, including eye protection, respiratory and hearing protection, as well as suitable gloves, when working with this tool.
WARNING: When cutting wood, ensure foreign objects, such as nails and screws, are removed from the workpiece before starting to cut.
WARNING: NEVER attempt to cut with a saw blade fitted that is not suitable for the material. NEVER use blunt or otherwise damaged saw blades.

Note: ALWAYS use clamps to secure your workpiece to the workbench wherever possible.

Switching on and off

1. Connect the plug to the power supply
2. Hold the tool securely with both hands by the Handle (8) and Barrel Grip (10), and make sure that you have full control at all times
3. Ensure the tool is not in contact with the workpiece before commencing with switching on
4. Press the Variable Speed Trigger Switch (9) to start the machine

Note: The speed of the blade is controlled by increasing/decreasing pressure on the Variable Speed Trigger Switch (also see 'Adjusting Tool Speed').

1. Release the Variable Speed Trigger Switch to stop the machine

WARNING: ALWAYS remove the saw blade from the cut before switching off.
WARNING: Always wait until the saw blade has stopped moving completely, before putting the machine down. Always disconnect from the power supply after use.

Note: This saw features a Lock-On Button (7), which locks the Variable Speed Trigger Switch (9) in the 'On' position. Press the Variable Speed Trigger Switch fully, and then engage the Lock-On Button for continuous operation. The tool will run on maximum speed. Press the Variable Speed Trigger Switch again, to release the Lock-On Button, and switch the machine off.

WARNING: DO NOT use the lock-on feature when the material requires cutting at reduced speeds (e.g. when cutting metal objects).

Adjusting tool speed

Note: This Silverline reciprocating saw features variable speed control, adjusted by the Variable Speed Trigger Switch (9), which enables it to be used with a variety of different materials, workpieces and objects.

WARNING: ALWAYS adjust the speed according to material requirements. Use appropriate cutting fluid or cooling agent when cutting metals.

• The Variable Speed Trigger Switch (9) is pressure sensitive. The further the Variable Speed Trigger Switch is depressed, the faster the tool speed
  Note: If in doubt about the correct cutting speed, refer to the blade manufacturer's instructions, and follow recommendations specific to the material being cut.

Making general cuts

1. Mark out the cutting line

2. Ensure that the material to be cut is secure. Small workpieces should be held in a vice or clamped to the workbench

3. Hold the saw firmly using both hands, one on the Handle (8), one on the Barrel Grip (10)

4. Make sure that the blade is clear of any obstruction and that the power cord or any extension cord is out of the path of the blade

5. Squeeze the trigger and allow the blade to reach full speed

6. Place the shoe on the workpiece and begin sawing

WARNING: Use ONLY enough pressure to keep the saw cutting. NEVER force the saw blade; allow the blade and the saw to do the work. Use of excessive pressure that causes bending or twisting of the blade may cause the blade to break.

Making plunge cuts

WARNING: Plunge cutting is an advanced technique with higher risk. Only attempt plunge cuts when you are competent and experienced with this technique.
WARNING: ONLY attempt the plunge cutting procedure in soft materials such as wood, plasterboard and similar materials. DO NOT attempt plunge cuts in metal or hard materials. ONLY use blades specifically designed for plunge cutting. If in doubt, refer to the blade manufacturer's instructions.
WARNING: Inspect both sides of the surface you are planning on plunge cutting into. Ensure there are no foreign objects on the underneath, or objects which could be damaged. Be aware of hidden pipe work and cables, when plunge cutting into drywalls, ceilings or floor boards. If pipes or cables may be present, switch off all electrical circuit breakers and shut off water and gas supplies at the relevant mains valves.
WARNING: Blindly plunge cutting into walls, floors and ceilings may lead to serious injury and substantial property damage.

1. Mark the line of the cut
2. Choose a point inside the area to be cut out and place the tip of the blade over that point
3. Rest the front edge of the shoe on the workpiece, so the blade does not make contact with the workpiece surface
4. Hold the tool securely with both hands by the Handle (8) and Barrel Grip (10), and make sure that you have full control at all times
5. Squeeze the Variable Speed Trigger Switch (9) trigger fully, for maximum speed, and allow the blade to reach full speed
6. Slowly lower the blade until it makes contact with the workpiece
7. Continue to cut slowly, until the blade has fully penetrated the thickness of the workpiece
8. Commence with cutting as normal

Metal cutting tips

Note: This saw is capable of cutting metals, such as sheet steel, pipe, steel rods, aluminium, brass and copper.

• ALWAYS use a blade specified for cutting metal
• Be careful not to bend or twist the blade and do not force the cutting action
• ALWAYS use a suitable cutting fluid when sawing soft metals and steel. This keeps the blade cooler, prolongs blade life and makes cutting more efficient
• Clamp the work firmly and cut close to the clamping point to minimise vibration
• When cutting conduit pipe or angle iron, clamp the work in a vice if possible and cut close to the vice
• To cut thin sheet metal, sandwich the sheet between hardboard or plywood and clamp the layers to prevent vibration and tearing of the metal

Maintenance

WARNING: ALWAYS ensure that the tool is disconnected from the power supply, before cleaning, changing accessories, or carrying out maintenance.

General inspection

Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight. They may vibrate loose over time
- Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs should be carried out by an authorised Silverline service centre. This advice also applies to extension cords used with this tool

Cleaning

WARNING: ALWAYS wear protective equipment including eye protection and gloves when cleaning this tool.

• Keep your tool clean at all times. Dirt and dust will cause internal parts to wear quickly, and shorten the device's service life
• Clean the body of your machine with a soft brush, or dry cloth
• Never use caustic agents to clean plastic parts. If dry cleaning is not sufficient, a mild detergent on a damp cloth is recommended

Water must never come into contact with the tool
- Ensure the tool is thoroughly dry before using it.
If available, use clean, dry, compressed air to blow through the ventilation holes (where applicable)

Brushes

Over time the carbon brushes inside the motor may become worn
- Excessively worn brushes may cause loss of power, intermittent failure, or visible sparking
- To replace the brushes, remove the brush access plugs from both sides of the machine. Remove the worn brushes and replaced with new. Replace brush access plugs. Alternatively, have the machine serviced at an authorised Silverline service centre

Note: The brush access caps are located on the Rotating Barrel (5). The Handle (8) must be adjusted to the most outward positions to gain brush access (see 'Adjusting handle position').

Storage

• Store this tool carefully in a secure, dry place out of the reach of children

Disposal

Always adhere to national regulations when disposing of power tools that are no longer functional and are not viable for repair.

• Do not dispose of power tools, or other waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), with household waste
• Contact your local waste disposal authority for information on the correct way to dispose of power tools
